*BEWARE* Scary close Fake Military

About a month ago I had come across a fake Military that looked almost identical in the pics. The only tell at first glance was the G10 looked a lot smoother and shinier than brand new Spydercos. They come with paperwork and box and they sell for about $45 for one, and less for wholesale.

I had decided to post not about them since there has been quite a few threads of fakes that have gone wrong, but today I came across someone in the knife community that was taken by a scammer on ebay. I personally don't mind clones or if you knowingly buy them, but I do hate fakes mostly because most of the scammers who are taking advantage good knife people.

On to the fake.

Stay off ioffer they are just like eBay but they have a big time counterfeit problem with their microteck knifes. The boxes and paper work. They are the OTF ones. If they have those then they probably have the other knife names too.

Is there a model of military where it is cpm-s30v steel and it says military on the blade instead of the spyderco label? also this one has the us patent # on the clip. The blade steel seems legit as far as being able to get insanely sharp. It was a pre-owned one I got on ebay to take with me on my trip to Africa this summer... Anyways, I hope it is legit. The lockup is very solid

Sounds like an older model. Saying it seems like S30V because it is able to get insanely sharp is not a good way to determine whether it is a legit steel. Almost all steels will get sharp. Pictures are always the best way to tell though.

What do you think would be the best way to test the steel? I own a lot of knives and this one is even sharper that a mora classic #1 that has been properly stropped

AFAIK, no one has faked the older versions of the Military. If it says MILITARY on the blade, and there's no crossbar in the A, (the A looks like an inverted V) I'd bet money it's legit.

Stainless or not is about as far as I can go honestly! I can see pictures up close of VG-10 from Spyderco and tell that it is VG-10, it has this unique sheen to it, almost looks like a cheap chrome coating actually. S30V is often described as being moderately difficult to get a good edge on. Not ZDP-189 difficult, but not AUS-8 easy either. And that is not necessarily the steel, but the hardness level, carbide amount and element certainly matter, but hardness is a bigger factor I would say. FWIW, cheaper softer steels usually are easier to get sharp.

By the way, I am starting to like this knife more than my 710 that I have EDC'd for the past 5 years. its so light and bossy

I love how surprisingly light yet reassuring the Military is. A great knife and unmatched in its 4" size.
