BHQ Lum Tanto

It all depends which Spyderco you're talking about.

The KnifeJoy Slyze Bowie M390 exclusive sold for $400 at the offering and resale pricing is currently anywhere from $600-800. Original SBs cost more than that.

The Paysan originally sold for an MSRP of $800 (I know because I bought 2 at the Opfocus discounted price of $400/each) and MAP was $520 at the time. One sold for $1200 recently on EB. I don't own either Paysan now (traded 1 and sold the other when it was "worth" a lot less) but I still own a Nirvana that I also bought for around $400. Two Nirvana's recently sold on EB for $1800 each.

You can complain about the current pricing all you like but it is what it is.

$290 for a Lum Tanto exclusive made w/M390 is NOT unreasonable in the current market. You don't want to pay it, fine. There are a lot of other people who will. The market has changed and is NOT likely to change back anytime soon.

There are still a lot of great knives in the $100-200 range but you won't find a Spyderco Lum Tanto (old or new) for that price anymore.
Well aren’t you just a ray of sunshine.

$300 is ridiculous for this knife, especially considering the Ayoob just sold for the low 200s. People are allowed to voice their disagreements and “it is what it is” isn’t really saying much, is it?

I was so excited for this model that I lost sleep over it. Ready to go this morning. Added to cart and received “We cannot ship this product type to your country.”

I live in Canada. As long as it’s not an auto then we’re good. And besides that, I’ve purchased from Blade HQ before more than once.

What a joke. I’ve seen several people talk smack about BHQ and now I understand why. Deleted my account.

I've always wanted a Lum Tanto, but I think I'm going to pass on this. Just not a good value for the money. I've got other things to blow $310 on.
Yeah, it's a very nice looking knife, but for the same price I can get an MKM Hero, which I plan to do, and get integral titanium bolsters, better F&F (sorry, Spyderco, love ya, but the Italians have you beat there) and a really classy looking all around package. No hate for the folks that decide this is worth the scratch, but it's not compelling enough for me to shell out the cash.

BHQ got my $ again. But I love Lum.

Hey! We agree on something! 🥳

There's an inherent issue with the C46 releases. Let me preface that with the fact that I'd say the C46 is my all time favorite knife. I EDC'd one of the OG G10 models for a decade if not more. I have one of the numbered ti originals that's basically the highlight of my crappy little knife collection. Here's the problem.

Ever since the first re-release came out in that light gray G10 the tip profile was changed. The originals were blunt with an Appleseed grind. That tip grind was pulled further back and thinner on the blade of every re-release, like a face lift. This made me c&r every single C46 release since the original. The entire "point" Bob Lum made, was missing. They Americanized the grind. Mr. Lum was a pioneer of the Japanese tanto grind. The C46 demonstrated it unlike any other production tanto. It was his stock and trade, and that alone is what set his work apart from the mall ninja tanto geometry that NO ONE respects to this day. The original C46 grind that Lum oversaw was extremely functional with a super-tip that was pointy, yet thick like a bullet and couldn't be broken. When a $300 C46 sprint run tanto has the fragility of a pm2, what's the point of it all? The original was quite simply, built with an indestructible tip that would work through kevlar, car doors etc. With no duress.

A previous comment mentioned this isn't going to have the amazing DLC coating Spyderco uses and be PVD instead. That's really a let down if so.

I just spent $300 I don't have on this knife, and I echo that the price doesn't lend well to what you are getting. Had this at least been DLC and had Spyderco held onto the original geometry QC standards, this knife would continue to make the impression the original releases did on everyone that's held one.

I'd be glad to update with my thoughts on it's arrival and show some pics of the revised tip profile compared to what Bob Lum wanted it to be. I hope to be wrong, I really do.

Pics please. I don't know what Apple seed means or how a tip is blunt.
Thanks in advance.

Must have been a lot of people not liking the price, it's still available to buy.
It could wind up being one of the greatest releases ever from house of the arachnid and rising sun if they did it right. Until we see those tip grinds there's no telling. I am definitely not going to let myself be excited. Am I the only one that's even bought one?

If you want it bad enough, you will pay $300. If you don't want it that bad just wait ten years. There will be new super steels, M390 will be old hat, what will be the latest and greatest design of the future is guaranteed to be something completely different, and if that happens, a used Syderco Lum Tanto will be more reasonable.

Early adopters may not realise, your knife habit is a fashion show. What is in today, will be out tomorrow.

Either that or there just aren't that many people who want one w/a black blade and green OD scales, regardless of the price.

I still don't see $290 being a magic # that people will not cross. Maybe it's "inflation" and the high cost of everything else which is creating the reluctance to spend $290 on another knife that you really don't need, when your greater need is to put gas in your tank and food on the table.

Whatever the case, it is what it is.

Almost EVERY post in every forum I've seen about this release is that they're charging too much. That says something.

But please, continue to regale us with your wisdom of how we should all be happy to pay $300 for a pocket knife.

Would've bit the bullet if it wasn't in M390. While I agree it's a little steep, I love tantos and would've like to have this to add in my rotation with my PM2 tanto

It's just my $0.02, but while I agree about MKM fit and finish, my experience is that all of the edges on their knives are extremely rounded, and they feel like butter in the hand... But many of them have forgotten that there is supposed to be one sharp edge on the knife.
