BHQ Lum Tanto

I wish I could refute it, but all of my Seki mid-lock Spydercos have had vertical play.

The blades are great, though.

I’ve had excellent experiences with some recent Seki models.

I recently bought four C-60 Massad Ayoobs. Two PE and two SE, from three different vendors. Grinds/blades on all are perfect and none have any vertical or side to side play of any sort. The first two I bought were so nice, I had to get two more. The fit and finish and action on all is superb.

I’ve had mixed results with some recent models made in Golden-

— Two Sprint Run Yojumbos are both flawless in every way. I bought the first one and liked it so much I bought a second.

—I finally decided to try the Shaman and picked up a recent Exclusive. It was so rough it had to go to Warranty. Even with the pivot screw loose to the point of extreme blade play it had a terrible and really loud action. It was impossible for me to eliminate blade play and still be able to move the blade. Ridiculously hard to unlock, as well. I was able to center the blade with the folded paper technique, but that was all I could do. I haven’t gotten it back yet so I don’t have a final disposition on it but I probably won‘t get another Shaman.

—Recently got an Manix 2 XL Exclusive. Out of the box it came drop free but off centered and had blade play. I broke out the Wihas and discovered the show side pivot was loose and showed no sign of locktite. The clip side pivot was the opposite. It was difficult to break free and had loads of locktite. I‘m not able tune it to drop free but it will close with a light snap of the wrist. The blade is very mildly off center but grind and edge is excellent. Incredibly sharp. It’s a keeper but I probably won’t buy another.

I‘m mechanically proficient but I‘m not a knife mechanic and I don’t take my Spydercos apart. I don’t go beyond tuning the pivot screw and maybe loosening and tightening the body screws, if easily done and it’s appropriate, I don’t spydie flick and I dont care if my knife is capable of it.

Taichung has been outstanding- a GB2 and a Kapara— flawless in every way a Spyderco user /collector expects. Awesome specimens.

I should add all of these were bought new from Spyderco distributors.

This has been my experience with some very recent purchases. I’m good with Seki and Taichung and mostly good with Golden and with that, the Lum is an iconic model and I might buy one if they do a run with a satin blade. The color scheme on this one simply doesn't appeal to me. I find it a little expensive for a basic G10 liner lock. Feedback and reviews on this BHQ run will likely influence my decision to buy any further runs.

Japanese blades are going up in cost because it’s probably costing Spyderco more to produce them there. The C-60’s may have been priced lower based on contracts negotiated at the time with the factory which made them. I‘m just speculating, though.

Based on my excellent experiences with the C60 Ayoob Sprint runs, I intend to get the Stretch 2 XL Cruwear that’s coming despite the similar price to the Lum. I like the larger Spydercos and it looks like more knife for the money. I also won’t pass up any Golden, USA made Military Exclusives that may be coming.

Everybody has their pricing limits. I don’t like paying more more than $200-250 for Spydercos. If they keep going up, I‘ll get priced out of collecting them and will just enjoy the ones I have. Hope that doesn’t happen because I really enjoy new models.

Do they have actual audible up/down blade play when locked up? Because my endura has a tiny bit of up/down lock movement under pressure but no actual play, the lockup is still solid. I also have heard, good or bad, this is just part of the design

yes, actual audible play. I don't think I've seen a single one that doesn't, and I've had half a dozen of them.

BIG shocker BLADE-HQ still hasn't shipped it. 2nd day air shipping over 24hrs later no movement. Their shipping dept is consistently disappointing.
I am sorry but it can take 24-48 hours to process an order after it has been placed. If you were charged for shipping or need additional assistance, please email us at questions@bladehq.com attention Melissa, or you can call our customer service department. - Melissa

Anyone see the announcement for this? Looks very cool, but $300 price makes me pause a bit. Thoughts?
Mine arrived in the mail today. I really like it so far, with one caveat. I had some spare phosphor bronze washers from knifekits.com and used a set to "upgrade" the Bob Lum Spyderco, which for some reason came with nylon or teflon washers. I had to drill out the phosphor bronze hole a bit, but the thickness seems to be the same as the nylon. And I think the outer diameter is a bit larger, so hopefully will make a more solid pivot. But yeah, for 3 bills, you'd think it would have come with phospor bronze washers to begin with.

Well at least it had them. The Ayoob didn’t have washers, just a raised part of the liner where the pivot was.

I splurged, and I'm glad I did.

Got mine yesterday. I've always loved the Lum folding tanto design (regret selling mine years ago) and I was willing to spend $300 on the Lum design with upgraded features rather than $400 for the original on the secondary market.

Knife is solid - no play; smooth action; centered. No lockstick. Razor sharp blade.

I don't mind the black blade - I don't own many black blades and it matches well with the black frame and nice OD green G 10

I'm glad Blade HQ and Spyderco released this throwback design with newer, improved materials. Yes, $300 is steep (especially in this economy) but it's appropriate given the higher cost of everything these days. This model will probably appeal more to the old farts like me who miss their original Lum, rather than the newer crop of collectors who will just spend half as much on a Civivi or Reate.

I feel my money is well spent. I'm a Spyderco and Sal Glesser fan for decades. If you are too, this knife will not disappoint.

I'll shoot some pics later.
