BHQ M4 Shaman!?!

Did not expect it to sell out like that, I thought it would be more in line with the satin manix.

In my view, the Shaman isn’t a particularly good design, it’s excessively heavy and clunky and needs a lot of refining. It’s also very overpriced.

I wonder how many were just bought for resale? I’m guessing a lot.

I bet a lot were bought by folks with a similar feel than you have but the M4/Jade swung them to at least try it and see. Then if they really didn't like it's easy to move on without taking a bath.

I find it quick to flip and close. I wouldn't call it clunky by any means. It feels substantial in a good way. It's really nice to use.

My only real criticism of the knife is that the jimping on the spine is essentially a pants saw. That's in stock position and my preferred orientation. I'm going to have to flip it, or it will absolutely shred pants, no doubt about it. It almost looks purpose-built for the task lol

But overall in its function as a knife it's really, really nice to use. And it's not as fast as a pm2 but it's much more quick than I thought it would be.

Any chance I could get a photo or two?

Thanks!
Here you go.

The shaman has been popular as hell since release. Its not a surprise at all that it sold out that quickly. Though almost any sprint will sell out fast.

Do you carry yip up or tip down?

Tip up. God's intended method.

No way, the devil whispered that BS in your ear, tip down for life.

Seriously I was going to ask if you carry tip up how does it shred your pocket? The jimping isn't riding on the pocket edge, so it shouldn't be a problem unless you're wearing tight skinny jeans. :)
I carried mine tip down and it still wasn't a problem on the pocket edge.

I'm talking about the process of inserting and removing the pocket knife on a regular basis. The sawtooth edge, I can feel it abrading against the inside top of the pocket as it goes in and out. I've taken to canting it as it goes into and out of the pocket. Once the jimping is beyond the pocket edge it's not an issue.

It's growing on me. Broke down some cardboard boxes with it today. A few got shredded and it handles like a thinner knife. (at least for that) The handle is PERFECT! Spyderco usually nails ergonomics, But this thing is comfortable in hand even for a Spyderco.

And M4, yeah it held up as I knew it would. ** I did touch it up on the SM over the weekend.** 15dps up to EE fine rods to give the knife a fair chance. The fact that I actually apexed 85% of the blade with a SM is noteworthy IMO. Then I stropped with 3 micron on leather.

Does the Shaman twist/rotate in your hand when doing heavy cutting? I don’t have one (yet), but noticed the wide blade and just wondering if that could be an issue.

Has anyone had chipping issues with the m4 blade? My shaman has absolutely zero use on the blade and came from the factory with lots of teeny tiny chips on the Apex.

Are you sure they're chips and not burr that wasn't fully removed?

If you intend to keep the knife I'd give it a very light sharpening with some fine / very fine diamond to check if it's one thing or the other.

(Or, alternatively you could try stropping with some diamond paste.)

Yeah they care chips nor a burr that's what i thought at first. I'm not sure if I'm going to keep it. I am disappointed with the quality of it. it's not the usual Spyderco quality. The lock bar for the compression lock is also very sharp and stiff with a burr on it that actually cut me when I was trying to disengage the lock.

Sounds like the quality control inspector was asleep at the wheel that day. I wouldn't blame you for returning it.
