Bill Bagwell Knives

Thanks Joe, must have missed this one... its very cool.

Oh yes thats right, there is only 4 HBs in stag, 2 of which are with you... Maybe a third, since you saved a piece of stag from gathering dust :D

If you go back to page one of this thread there are a couple of dog bones and a birds head. On page seven is masterduck's birds head. The birds head is becoming my favorite but they are not cheap.

I have the biggest Hell's Belle so far me thinks in stag until this one by Joe comes along :P. There's only two in damascus and stag. One is Joes which to me has such a beautiful fire blade and mine has more of a lizard skin twist to it.

A really nice knife. I saw this on Arizona custom knives and now I wish I would have pulled the trigger.. Congrats on a great snag..:thumbup:

Thanks fellas, it's growing on me more and more each day. Real nice stag and one thing I really like is he solders the blade to the hilt. I see alot of bowies where that is not done. Can anyone tell me approx how old it may be? I thought I read in here somewhere that he no longer stamps his damascus blades like this. Is Bill a Mastersmith, I thought I read that he is but he's not mentioned anywhere in the ABS?

Talked to Bill and sent him pic he said about 15 years old. Bill was one of the first MS's. He was a founding member of the abs. Congrats

Where would have he been on the list of Mastersmiths would you know Joe,
I was thinking he would have been fourth or something; just be nice to know :D?

I believe it was 79 or 80 at the New York Show the first Master Smith stamps or titles where given out by none other than Debbie Harry of Blondie. They where given out according to who at the time could make damascus steel. Number 1 went to Bill Moran number 2 went to Bill Bagwell. .I know Fogg and Fikes are in the top 6 but as for order I only know 1 and 2

Since this seems to be the definative Bagwell thread I will add a pic of my latest HB

I think but I'm not sure that Wayne Valachovic was the fifth of the original 5 Mastersmiths.
Edit:
Yes, he was. Received his stamp in '82.
Jim Treacy has some stellar examples of his work.
Sorry for the thread drift.

Bill will not be mentioned there because he elected to drop out of the ABS so did Fikes. Don Fogg dropped out for a time also and then was reinstated but thats neither here nor there Bill will always be a founder and greatly contributed to the ABS and the tests the Smiths go thru today. At one time he was one of only 3 people making Damascus steel in the world.

Do not want to get into why Bill elected not to be associated with the ABS it is not my business.

On to the knives I just happened to get some pics of some knives Bill just finished. One is a stag and carbon bowie he did for himself and a piece he just finished for me.
Here's the first

Beautiful stag piece:cool: and can't wait to see more of your bird's head.
Thanks, Joe!

Is the blade on that stag one like heat coloured Joe or is that just something up with the reflection ? Loving those cavred stud on the sheaths really set the knife off now. :D Looks like a really elegant using knife. One that you'd not be afraid of getting out to do the dirty work and to show off a bit of class as well. Gotta love it. :D
