"BK151" Trailing Point Camp Paring Knife - Update: Piggyback 710 Comes Through!

HH, you're welcome to incorporate any of my ideas into one of your designs. Frankly, I'd love to see your execution of the plan in my head - because it will be so far beyond my ability to render it in steel. But I'm going to try anyway.

GSoM - I don't mind you "cluttering" my thread - but now I'll go take a look at yours!

No new work done yet, but the steel "template" is getting cleaned up.
And the G10 liners came in:
Is that a stuffed snake there? Now I'm thinking snakeskin micarta would be badass....seriously so.

Yea, my daughter made that herself last summer. (Wife did put the eyes on.) She left in in the garage after the great basement flood of 2013, and I haven't figured out a place to put it yet.

Snakeskin mycarta - like this?

Or from an actual snake? Now THAT would be cool!

Those are cool. I was thinking something like a leather handle, kind of shrink-fit stretched over some backer scales and stitched on the bottom. But since I know jack about how to accomplish something like that, even a faux snakeskin micarta would do...maybe silkscreened on and then one last coat of resin? I have no Idea. Well, I have a few, but none of them well thought out. Yet.

For what's it worth, I think you did very well on your 11 TJ. I'm glad you decided to NOT put the swedge on there. I like the swedge of the 5 and 15, but I also think you need a bit more blade for a swedge to turn out right on a smaller blades. Otherwise, it looks like a fillet knife. Anyway. I really dig the mock up drawings from the first page.

If I had any talent and patience I would attempt something like what I saw from the two drawings on my extra 24.

"Extra"!?? Trust me, you don't need "talent". You need "ganas".....and an extra knife. Although I'm pretty sure that there is no such thing as an "extra" knife. Like "extra money", it all has some use. So use it. If it really is "extra", you can send it to me ;).

Hmm. I haven't actually decided not to incorporate the swedge yet, but I'll certainly take that into consideration, and see how it looks/cuts after getting the point well and truly trailed.

I think I need a full-size belt grinder. The worksharp is great for sharpening, but it takes FOREVER to remove stock. And it's so narrow, it's tough to get a nice even grind line.
So, as always, I'm alternating between the hack saw, hand files, dremel, WSKTS and drill press for reshaping chores. Hope to have an update in the next couple days.

Really slow going, but some progress is being made.
Amazing what a difference a fresh abrasive can make.

Mini-muk, huh? Are you trying to give me ideas for my NEXT project already? As if this one hasn't taken long enough... ;)

I really want to cut into the wood and see how it looks, but figure I better take it one step at a time.

That's looking really good!
Can't wait to see the finished product.

With so many other projects going on right now (some involving use of Beckers old and new), I didn't get a lot of time to spend on this one tonight. But speeding up the grinder certainly helped. No more micro-muk.
Hopefully, with a new abrasive belt, I'll only have one more late night of stock removal - then I can move on to finish, and get going on the scales.

Looking at my drawings a little closer, I think I do prefer the look without the swedge. Tip seems like it'll still be plenty thin and pointy, but I'll have to see when I get there.

Aha! Progress!

Somehow I ran out of stripper. But, I had a mostly empty quart of Floor Adhesive Remover with just enough in the bottom to try it out.
Let it sit for about 1/2hr, and the coating peeled off in sheets:

Actually worked better than the last time I used stripper. But I think I optimized the wait time by not leaving.

Here they are, in their roughed-out, unfinished glory:

I managed to get the spine to line up just as I wanted, and better than I ever thought I could:

Now onto final finish, and working some scales.
Getting a big Ikea delivery tomorrow, and the weekend is pretty busy, so I probably won't have much of an update for several days. But I feel great temptation to cut the wood into slabs and adhere the G10 to it. So we'll see.

Hey tjs, Seeing this new vision of yours take shape has become an exciting event. Very nice design, can't wait to see the unveiling.

Looking excellent, TJ. Are you planning on making the 151 scales removable? I'm wondering because it doesn't look stripped under the scales. If you are gluing, AFAIK the epoxy will have better adhesion to bare, roughed up steel. I like the shape of it. My 5 needs some work, too. The steel is pretty "wavy"...not complaining, though, as it was a GAW at the Northeast Gathering last year. But it's gonna require a LOT of work to look good if I strip it. Good luck with your IKEA delivery. You should check out this song by Jonathan Coulton: Ikea

Thanks guys!

Yes, Mike, I'm planning removable scales - that's why I left the coating underneath. I haven't done it this way before, but I've seen recommendations and thought I'd give it a try.
