"BK151" Trailing Point Camp Paring Knife - Update: Piggyback 710 Comes Through!

Thanks Jordan.
I can't wait to see it either! Still a little ways to go.
I'm excited to see how the modded 11 looks next to the shiny 15.
I wish I'd gone slightly thicker on the red G10 liners. Between the black tang coating and black "pinstripe" liner the red kinda gets lost. But I'm not redoing it!

That's it, TJ! Just forge ahead, and store all this stuff in the old bean for the next project. They're looking good. I wish I would stop getting home from work at 9-10 pm. I got all I can do to check in on BF much less get any projects done, knife or honey-do. I admire your persistence. Gratz also on getting photobucket working again. I will say that although flickr seems to keep "tweaking" their interface in ways I find annoying, they do offer a crap ton of storage and I don't think there are any bandwidth limits. At least as easy to use as PB, from what I've seen.

Thanks Mike!
Plugging away is what I do...
I tried Flickr once, before signing up with PB, but it wouldn't let me store anything. I'm sure they'd be fine, but I just never went back. PB's funny that I have more storage than I could ever imagine using, but they log views and see how big the files are and limit it for each month. But it seems to be working.

Not a ton of time after volleyball tonight, but I wanted to even 'em out a bit. Probably just a couple more days before I can oil 'em up:

Don't let anybody tell you the stock tweener sheaths aren't good for anything:

Thank you Dex!

Forging ahead - got a little farther on the 15. Up to 150 grit, and wiped clean with mineral spirits.
Trying to decide if it needs a little more shaping, or if I should move on to finish sanding.
Feels great in hand, so I'm leaning toward the latter.

Finished up the 15! Hand-sanded the scales to 2500, and applied the same oil-and-wax mixture as on the 151.
I gotta say, wood is so much more forgiving to work on than micarta or stabilized wood.
I had a couple scratches/small gouges in there, and was able to take care of 'em in minutes by starting over from 200 grit.

For your viewing pleasure:

What do you think? Do I need a matching 5 to complete the set?

Thanks Mike. It is comfy.

I know a guy who knows this guy who makes knife holding things. :)
Thinking of asking around - once I get a 5 inbound.

If you think you need the 5, better get it soon. They are being discontinued. Of course, I don't know exactly when.

Thanks guys!
Tom H - I don't know if you're pulling my chain or what, but the BK5 to complete this set is incoming. Liners are laid up and curing; remainder of elm branch is already cut and waiting.

Time to resurrect this thread!

My 5 came in today. The wife is not amused (she opened the package thinking, perhaps, it was a Mother's Day gift... Like a dozen roses and sharp knives all day every day isn't sufficient. Sheesh. ) But I LOVE it! (No pics yet.)

In the meantime, I was BBQ'ng tonight so I thought I should put some protection on the blades and put 'em to work.
I was really, really going to mix it up and Season the blades with flaxseed oil in the over. But 6 coats will take me 3 days, and I'm a little concerned about messing the temper as I bring the oil to smoking. So, instead, I mixed what was left of the Grey Pupon with a dash of Tapatio, a squish of French's Yellow, and the juice from this morning's grapefruit. My kids thought it a great science experiment, and one helped me stir it. "Smells great, Daddy. What are you going to call it?" "Patina!"

A little shiny "before" action:

Putting it on:

Letting it sit:

Taking it off:

A little vinegar soak:

I hit each edge with the 6000-grit WSKTS belt 5x per side to develop the burr and alternating 5x per side to strop. Shave hair and slice hot dog and burger packages like they aren't there. My FIL was struggling with a plastic knife and his hamburger. He got through it just I was going to offer the 15. But it went though mine like warm butter. No pics - too busy cooking for 20 and eating delicious food.

I also started scales for the 5. Marked for upcoming 3D shaping. They look quite a bit darker, but it's from the same doggone branch. I'm sure they'll get lighter as I move deeper into the heart. I hope.

What d'ya think?

siberian elm heartwood is dark.
heating the blade above 400 will soften the temper.
best patina i ever put on a blade was with a smoked leg of lamb still sizzling from the smoker.
second best came from a pork shoulder.
dicing potatoes and onions will darken a blade nicely as well.

Thanks Vik.
I have no idea what species of Elm this is - it was an old, probably 6-8ft diameter, tree in Northern California. Bark looked like perhaps it was a red elm. The branch for the scales was only about 4" across, at the widest, to start.

I was going to heat to 350 - and it looks like it depends upon current HT and hardness if that will have an effect. So I think I'll pass.
I have a carbon steel kitchen knife I let patina naturally - I've cut everything with that little guy: onion, taters, avocado, grapefruit, lemons, tomatoes, raw meat, cooked meat. It's very dark but not exactly even and there's no "pattern" to it. I wanted to start these off looking like something, knowing that they'll change quite a bit with time and use.

Looks great TJ! I'd love to do this some time for my knives with some oak, always wanted to make my own handles.
Looks like you had a lot of fun!
Matching handles look great!

Thank you.
It is a lot of fun - if you (like me) think that kind of work is fun. And you like the vacuum the workshop...
I've been so tempted to buy factory micarta and some awesome premade wood scales - but each time I do I say "Hey, I can do that..." so I do.
Highly recommended.

I drilled the holes in the 5 scales using my 7 as a template. This morning the screws didn't want to align. May take a bit of playing around this evening.
It looks good 1/2 stripped, at least.

Looking good. Nice patina on those knives. Can't wait to see the 5 complete it!

I really like what you did to the 11, by the way.

Also was able to start shaping 'em up. Not done, but wiped with mineral spirits to remove the dust.

Until I contract someone to make me a quiver/3-way piggyback:

That's "wicked awesome" as we say here.....I gotta get going on a couple more projects now. Lost my head of steam after the 11. I really like the matching scales, kinda like a presentation set.
