Black blades and sheeple

I sorta see where you are coming from Socom. I sometimes get fed up if someone does see my knife and exclaim, "that's a bowie knife, WHAT in the world do you need that for?" I find that as I get older, 55 right now, I seem to have less patience with people. I think I'm turning into a curmudgeon. But since my mother taught ne the sugar/vinegar thing, in my other post, I just say "you fooking idiot" to myself, then try to apply a little sugar to the situation.

Then they write their congressman who then makes a bill making it illegal for you to carry your knife.

Not in my state they don't.
Ok then you carry something that will please other people. Me, I'm carrying what pleases me.

People that get scared when they see a large size folder need to be educated. They are scared because they don't know.

Also what do yall do with your knife that scares people. Just use it if you must, then close it and put it back in your pocket.

Yea, I think that's the best approach to the situation.

...and you think 'pound sand' is the proper methodology for educating said coworkers?

It is all in ones perspective. I carry a 1 7/8" blade Buck, at work. People laugh if/when they see it. I NEVER let anyone "hey-can i see it", or use it. If they need something cut, I do it for them. The next statement is usually "holy s***, i have never seen a knife that sharp !" Some people do NOT like the fact that i carry even this tiny knife, & they say i have a weapon. To this i say almost ANYTHING can be used as a weapon if you have a criminal mind & ask them why they think like a criminal. I think it is a tool, period---even if used in self-defense, IMHO it is still a tool-allowing you to protect yourself from a criminal.

Everyday things that can be used as a tool, can also be used as a weapon if you have a criminal mind.

Keys
pens
pencils
eyeglass sides
belts
phone
kitchen tools
wrench
screwdriver
hammer
5 strip outlet
ect
ect

Do we ban them all ? Many people are in prison for killing someone with a hammer. Nothing could get done if we banned everything that has/could be used as a weapon. What we have to do is just make the penalties stiff enough, that people who use tools as weapons, go to prison for a long time. A tool used as a weapon in a crime should be no different than a gun if the person is injured or dies. JMHO.

Kind of hard to educate someone if you do not care.

I can't have faith in my ability as an individual to educate the masses if it is founded on a fear that laws will change from mere perception and not documented events. If I worried that my knives would get banned just because I carry them and not because crimes are being committed with them, then I would just expatriate cause crap is just too far gone by then.

I told him that I was fully aware of the local laws, and that the knife I carried was of legal size, with a blade under 4". Then he smiled and took out a CR Mnandi and said "mine's not as big, but I do live in NYC". :)

haha I love the feeling when stuff like that happens. Its like a surprised/shocked quickly changing into elation!

I agree it is best to handle peoples opinions with empathy and understanding. My wife was with some of her GF and some new friends and she pulled out her Spyderco Dragonfly tatoo to open a stubborn package and one of the new ladies went WHOA!! called it a switchblade. My wife the consummate diplomat told them that its is no switchblade (perfectly legal) and that her hubby (me) collects and professionally sharpens knives and her friends agreed with her. She actually turned that into some business for me. I say lets be respectful, educate and inform and not brandish a blade like a hoodlum.

I was in a military training course years ago, and I took out my SOG Stingray to cut something. Two of my classmates were surprised I had it in the classroom, surprised at the size, and were convinced that it was dangerous because it was very sharp. Had a hard time convincing them that a sharp knife really is a safer knife than a dull knife. They never got it.

I was working for a local Web Hosting company doing admin work. When I was in the NOC, I would carry a blade of some sort to cut boxes. One nite I was on call and we had a server crash and I had to do an emergency installation of a backup.server to handle the failure. I had a Strider Buck folder with a Tanto Blade that a friend had done a custom grind on the blade. The blade looked quite shocking to the average untrained eye with the high polish of grind against the gun blue mirror finish of the non ground portions. A fellow working on a rack 10ft away left the room while I was woking on unboxing and cutting eqipment out their wraps. 15 minutes later I have two shotguns pointed at me demanding I put down the weapon and lay face down on the floor. The jackass had called the police and said I had an illegal knife and was sure I had a handgun and the makings of a bomb... It took me 36 hours and calling in a couple of favors to completely calm t he situation. This idiot admitted he had based his accusations on his belief that knives should be illegal and he wanted to make a.point. He was written a ticket for falsifying and given a slap on the wrist. It took me 6 months to get the back from thr PD. This is whats wrong with society in general. I live in IN where auto are illegal but Balisongs are now legal. But local Police go insane if they ses a Balisong. We so need to educate the masses.

Are you scared of your boss or other coworkers? As long as you are not breaking the law or company policy, tell them to pack sand
No offense, but that is the worst advice anyone can give a person regarding knives in the work place. Yes following company policy does help to ensure uninterrupted employment, but behaving a bold manner is a sure wy to land under someone's microscope. All it takes is one person to say, "Yes, Bob was waving around that deadly weapon around the water cooler again.". I can't speak for other people, but I do enjoy my work, and I'd rather not have to start from scratch looking for a new job. In this economy, it isn't the easiest thing to come by. A little common sense goes a hell of a long way. Just saying.

I merely have a healthy recognition that my boss tends to roll over and overreact to complaints from staff and patrons. I recognize that my organization is also stuffed to the gills with middle management busy-bodies. I recognize that office politics can be a blood sport, and it is foolish to get on the bad side of certain individuals. I am aware that many of my colleagues are ninnies. I am painfully aware that job is annoying enough as it is, and I have little desire to make it even more aggravating over something so inconsequential. ;)

What are yall's experiences with black coated blades and sheeple?

Doesn't seem to make a difference to anyone. If they are going to have a problem because I have a blade, they will no matter the color. If they aren't, they aren't.

Personally, I don't care for coated blades.

That is just plain WRONG! I hate uneducated people that think the tiniest knife is "a dangerous weapon" and the person caring it should tied up and hung for it. I carry a balisong where i live, nothing in my state law says i can not carry one but people all around here think they are illegal. Its just sad

I do not believe that being a knife enthusiast makes anybody a better person. It does not make anybody any smarter, any cooler or any more likable. So the sense of superiority is probably false. It does not require much of anything to shock people around you showing off with your big/small, cheap/expensive, black/satin finished blade.
So if somebody uses a "sheeple" term - would not it make him "a bit of a" snob?

Just carry what you want to. If someone is scared enough to complain or say something then it doesn't make a difference if it's a 3" or 4" satin or black coated.

Don't act stupid with your knives in public and it should help with your problems.

Over the years I have had plenty of coworkers get shocked when they saw my knives. But they knew me and know I wouldn't use them to hurt anyone. I can see where someone that doesn't know you would freak out, but a coworker. Someone that knows you? You should be able to calm them down.
