"Black Box" Winchesters

Just wanted to say nice work on the reference chart/photos Al, thank you. What a great thread this is for Winchester collectors. I just picked up a coffin jack, and it is well built, as good as any knife I own.

Some of the first knives I collected. The varied bone and shield rarity of various patterns are shown in "Price Guide to Collector Knives". Pretty good reference, although not as inclusive as posted above, thanks Al.

Nice one, Brad... and thanks, it was fun putting it together.

Thanks, Lyle and you're welcome!

Beautiful knives folks as well as a nice reference. Really well built knives for sure and likely to become more sought after as the years go by.

On a side note, are there any other manufacturers who have had such good luck doing black bone? This stuff is jet black with no light spots on the samples I have seen?

It's actually bone manufactured by Rogers Mfg. Co, for Queen, who made the knife on contract from Blue Grass Cutlery, sold as Winchester. Rogers mad a lot of bone for a lot of companies. This bone looks black, but is actually very very dark brown (and some not so dark, just brown). More on Rogers from Levine: http://pweb.netcom.com/~brlevine/bonehand.txt

Thanks, Brad. I did not know that it was Rogers bone. I agree, in good light it will appear a very, very dark brown.

I only have a handful of the Black Box Winchesters but would love to have that many more. I love 'em but the prices have gone up since I acquired my first few so probably won't be adding any to the pile. Sure happy to have what I do have though.

Hi you.

Blademan13, I hope I didn't come off the wrong way, like I'm the "know-it-all-perfessor" (which I am not:confused:), just like to share what I know. You're right, the sunlight changes the color too. I hope to see some more posts with photos, here's another one I picked up, not sure if I'll keep it, but it's a beauty:

No worries Brad. It's really too bad we don't see bone much anymore that is this dark. Any idea why it seems that way?

Adding a couple of Black Box knives I haven't seen posted

"The Scouts" set, 1988... high quality fit/finish, main blades are stamped, rather than etched

And a couple of more...

It was mentioned previously in this thread that the cast bronze handled knives were made by Utica.

#1991-2 -- 3 1/2 inches -- Equal End Jack -- Cast Bronze (some of these were made with Sterling Silver handles, so that's something to keep an eye peeled for)

Thank you!

It was made by Queen. I'm not sure of the color of the box.
