"Black Box" Winchesters

Thanks very much. These knives have some very decent bone on them, great for a couple of users but a nice worthy collection item too.

Regards, Will

I don't think I've posted this picture on this thread. Not the best pic and not all of the ones I have kicking around.

That there is a beauty! :) How are the pulls? The main on mine has a pleasantly strong pull, but the secondary is bit of a beast. Opening the pen on my coffin Jack used to scare me, before I started carrying an A Wright two-blader. :D I was just admiring my Winchester when this thread popped up again.
By the way, nice pictures!

Michael

Edited to add crappy photo :eek:o_O
I know what you mean about the fear inspiring pull on the pen blade. The pen on this one was the same way, it has got a little better over time.

I find the pulls very OK on the patterns but the master blade on my Teardrop is a little light.

Here's a couple more: Coffin and Swell Centre Whittler. The Coffin is as far as I know the only production version of this rare pattern - unless you find a really old example from a long defunct maker. There is of course a CASE/Bose Collab but these cost a great deal and are not always everybodys' cup of tea. Find it odd GEC hasn't had a shot at one, their Eureka is fantastic. But, they seem to be wrapped up in the endless 15 re-cycling these days although the 44 Gunstock will be a new pattern at last. The Swell Centre Whittler is together with the Swell Centre Pen and the Stockman, one of my BB user and carry knives. I do have a reserve of the Whittler though, a beautiful smaller 3 blade knife. At least, I think so:)

Thanks much for this historical tidbit on the Coffin pattern, Will! I was fortunate enough to snag a NOS BBW Coffin Jack (2921) recently at an extremely reasonable price.

Oddly enough, the initial reason for my purchasing it was to allow for a more "cost effective" examination of the pattern before taking the plunge on a Case/Bose Coffin Jack in ebony. LOL

I may still proceed with that purchase, but this thread has both educated me on BBWs and changed my opinion on moving my 2921. It's a keeper now for sure. My example, like many others have noted, has excellent F&F. The jigging on the darkly colored brown bone is just fantastic!

I'll try to get some pics of it posted within this thread later this evening :D

I stumbled across a 2935 on the bay, made a offer that was surprisingly accepted and I've been smitten with this little thing ever since it arrived.

I had previously tried a black box stockman and toothpick, neither of which I cared for. This 2935 is just perfect though.

I daily an ebony Norfolk and now this guy is riding in my shirt pocket while the Norfolk stays in my pants pocket.

Once I got the crude out the joints, it has a nice action on the main blade. Still needs a sharpening though.

I'm really after a 2903 now. I love that shape and it's uncommon to see it with a spear main. They all of the sudden dried up though.

If I recall correctly, the 2935 is a twin to the Norfolk?

It is, it's a smaller ancestor to the Case/Bose Norfolk.

I'm not sure if Queen/Winchester referred to it as such though. I've seen someone else reference it as a Congress Pen.

In Levine's Guide, the handle is a swell center congress. The Norfolk handle is a bit different on each side.

Here's a sibling in stag.

Wow, now I didn't know they existed in stag...something else to keep my eye out for. I just love the lines on it .I don't know why but swell center knives just get me going. The 33 conductor is another near constant companion of mine.

Now that makes sense.

I had completely forgotten about the Northwoods Norfolk run. I imagine Ill have a better chance of finding a stag 2935 though at a reasonable price!!

I had a Northwoods Norfolk but I gave it away...it now has Stag scales;)

That latest find of yrs Justin is a terrific little knife, I'd love to get one but it's proved elusive. Jake's Stag version is a treat too:cool:

I'm very fond of this whole series, some real quality and beautiful bone to be had.

Thanks, Will

Couple of comparison photos....love the sunk joints.

Wow, I don't think I have ever seen these 2 side by side? I never realized they were so visually different. One is sleek and stylish, the other not so much. I would really love to find that Winchester in stag:thumbsup:
