"Black Box" Winchesters

Just wanted to show my user Swell-Centre Pen, this too is a lighter bone example and I was struck by the similarity with MerryMadMonk MerryMadMonk who has the genuine antique version which he discusses in the Antique Winchester thread. Didn't want to clutter that one up with the 'newer' Black Boxes;) This is a great pattern as a versatile carry, like it a lot.

Tim, according to Bill Howard, the black bone was salvaged from the factory after it was closed, quite a bunch of it!! It needed to be dried out, and some re-dyed, but the jigging stood up to the abuse!!

Thank you Charlie.

This 3964 stockman showed up yesterday - my first of the Black Box Winchesters. A very well-made knife...love the jigging on the covers, and the story behind it (thanks, Charlie waynorth waynorth )!:cool: I wish I'd thought of including the box in the pic, but didn't think of it until seeing pics that others had posted.

The blades are fairly stout, and spey & sheep do brush against each other when deploying either one, but I guess that's normal for this pattern. Main blade is free and clear of either of the others. The pulls are a bit heavy, and hopefully they'll get easier as I exercise the blades some. Right thumbnail hopes so, anyway. :p

When you guys go looking for these do you just type in "black box Winchester knife" in the auction search?
I'd like to get into acquiring some of these and other non new USA knives but I have no experience. Any tips?
Thanks

I’ve bought them at gun shows, old stock, new in box.

I appreciate the response. The one I bought is stamped 4949 '98 on the clip blade and 4902 '96 on the sheepsfoot. I'm new to slipjoints but am confused about the different years on the same knife. I've searched those numbers and found the 4949 is from a 4-blade sowbelly. The 4902 is from a congress. The one I bought is a 3-blade sowbelly. I'm thoroughly confused. I appreciate any help or info.

It's a pattern number 3949S. The "S" is for Stag. It is most likely a '91.
