Blade Forums Spring Street Barlow (BF Knife 2021)

Does anyone keep the little white bags of desicant (sp?) for storage or do y'all discard them? Don't see how much good they are.
I keep ‘em in the tubes but I keep my knives in a case so I can check on them lol. I use bigger packets for document storage in fire safes but those change colors as the loose effectiveness.

Yeah, that's kinda what I'm getting at. Once the bag has lost it's effectiveness, all you've got left in the tube is a little bag of contaminants in with your knife. I toss mine FWIW. Never had a problem with GEC knives in tubes before they started dropping the bags in the tubes.

Those white dessicant packs will be worth a fortune to collectors down the road.

What with so many forum members sharpening their forum knife, actually using the knife, and now you are tossing the dessicant packs away, I am starting to wonder about most of you. Do you all wear the button on your lapel also?

I will be doing the responsible thing and my forum knife (and button and dessicant pack and styrofoam packing peanuts) will be locked away in a heavy steel ammo box and buried in the backyard never ever to see light of day.

It can’t arrive soon enough.

I think for the small ones to work they need to be in an airtight environment and probably still swapped out every few years depending on your local humidity level. Hopefully folks that have theirs in deep storage in their tubes are coated in oil or something like renwax.

As mentioned earlier, they lose effectiveness if they do their job. A nice added touch of insurance in my opinion.

I bought a few 16 ounce jars of desiccant and use paper coin envelopes to shake an ounce into. I then replace them every year, or if they show a change in color.

I have no idea if they can cause any harm after decades of use, but if you see no need or benefit, it is probably no biggie to toss them.

The little tiny desiccant they ship with are probably already no good, I don’t believe the tiny ones have much of a open shelf life. I always toss em. They make quite a bit larger ones that last for a couple weeks to a couple months, I keep a few in my gun safe at all times. Nice touch on GECs part to add one in every tube though, Bill and GEC is top notch. Every single one of these knives look great so far!

Nobody ever said anything about desiccant, so I thought nothing of it when it failed to appear. They did say these knives wouldn’t be pink, so I was a little surprised to see pink at four corners at at the edges of the scales. No matter. It’s a damn handsome knife, and very well built.

the packs absorb moisture from the air in their general vicinity...once they reach the same humidity level as their environs, they're essentially useless..

.I've heard they can be recharged <discharged?> by placing in the oven on low heat and drying out the excess humidity....

personally I toss em because I view them as essentially a moisture magnet once they get loaded up.

So we’re throwing away the dessicants, sharpening and wearing pins?! We’re animals.

Also, my 1 year old chewed on the tube within 15 minutes of having it… the sticker on the top is no more.. 😂

Mine is only 8 miles with 2 miles of it with a 30 MPH speed limit . But it is uphill both ways .

Harry

At least it isn’t uphill both ways through the snow… yet. 😁

Those little packets aren’t desiccant, it’s a red dye preservative, keeps the scales from going pink until the dye has fully cured. I can’t believe they left yours out! 😳😉😁

My knife has been out of the tube since it arrived. Its already started to turn pink. I better get it back on the tube with the desiccant baggy… careful folks
