Yes carbon blades smell with some fruits and veggies. I think apples have Malic acid it makes the blade smell real earthy almost like blood. Some smell worse than others. This one is very odiferous.

It goes away and eventually the patina stops the odor. As @jsdistin pointed out
Interesting, I've cut a few apples, an orange, some ribs and a tomato and haven't noticed any weird smell on mine.

...dangit, now I want a funky smelling knife too. Maybe mine is defective

Losing the dye on the handles pretty quickly. That’s just from coming in and out of the slip. Still a great knife.

Well, the person I was going to gift my 2021 BF knife to said; "they'd see how they liked it and if they didn't like it or want to use it, they'd pass it along". Not exactly what I had/have in mind so, I'm not sending it to them. Now what to do? Well, I think I'll punch a dimple in the arch formed by the words "Blade Forums" on the tang so no one can flip it and see if someone else wants it or just use it and put a patina on it. Just don't want someone flipping it. Maybe just leave it in it's tube for the rest of my time and let someone going through my stuff say; "Hey look at this knife. Anybody want it?"

😮 Man, some people. You couldn't write it.

I'd advise hanging on to it until the dust settles. Not everyone has had a chance to buy one yet, and someone worthy may come along next year.

Why not just keep, enjoy and use it Ed? Is it a configuration you don't enjoy totin' or something?
But yeah, I couldn't gift someone with that train of thought a special knife either.
Hope your knife finds a forever home where it will serve a useful and joyous journey.

I’d vote keep & use. Plenty of time to give it away later if you don’t care for it. Or give it to the original intended recipient but with the stipulation that they themselves *give* it to someone else if it doesn’t tickle their fancy.

I had a funny thought, you could scratch EARL into a cover...

I remember the dust up over the Candle-Tip that Chris cj65 cj65 and I worked on with Charlie and GEC way back when.

I got out my copy of that knife to take side by side pictures with the spectacular 2021 knife, which I am enjoying immensely.

I would really hate to see the tradition of a forum knife end, but I would also completely understand, having gone through the process once myself.

I know there's going to be a variation in color but here's a closeup of my BF 86 next to my 66 in Hemlock Green Jigged Bone. I also wonder if they dropped "Green" from the BF 86 handle name because it was too confusing for some 😄

Your 66 seems more brownerer. The only green I see anywhere is on the pivot pin of the 66.

Maybe it wasn't a reference to the colour but a reference to the wood being recently cut?

I mean I know you wouldn't normally use green wood for scales but it's what I always think of first when I hear the term.

"they'd see how they liked it and if they didn't like it or want to use it, they'd pass it along"
That's not the kind of person I'm looking for either.
I want someone that NEEDS it for their big(ger) collection of Forum Knives, or someone I know will cherish it forever.

That's my plan... I'm waiting for the right person to come along and say, "Darn, I can't believe I missed the forum knife"... I'll know it when I see it.
