BLADE SHOW ’09 – Show us what you got; Please!

I wonder of makers are reluctant to post knives too early before the show. I've never really thought about the competition between makers. I'm not saying they're are competing against each other, but I'm sure they would prefer to sell out. So, posting to early could let the other makers know who's bring what.

I doubt that competition has anything to do with it. I think it’s probably more a matter of getting the knives photographed for posting. I’m sure all of the makers are scrambling to build knives, as I am, and haven’t had the time to deal with photography. I’ve got four more knives finished for the Blade Show, but haven’t had time to photograph them yet. It won’t happen today either. I hope to get them shot and posted this weekend.

In my experience, these preview threads don't see much action until two weeks before the show - with the bulk shown in the final week. The reason is as Steve suggested - the bulk of the knives aren't yet finished and photographed until about that time.

My problem with early posting is;

#1, I would rather post a photo from Coop or P-7. Mine are barely OK at best.

#2, Folks want to buy the ones I post and this leaves no knives for the show.

#3, I only have one finished at this time, but will have 6 or 7 for the show.
It will be 'fire, burning hair and flying abrasive grit' in-between fishing trips for the next few weeks :D

In the past I have posted this thread about 4-6 weeks out from the Blade Show. This year I started it 8 weeks out as I started seeing makers posting show knives around the different forums. In addition I expect makers will be finishing knives early this year considering the slowdown as a result of the economy.

I like the pace at which knives have been posted here as it's given us more time to enjoy and comment on them.
It gets so hectic in the last couple weeks when dozens of knives are posted daily that I feel many don't get the attention they deserve.

Sorry for the picture, but I am having some issues with my camera. This little knife has a couple of firsts. This is the first time that I have silver brazed anything and the first time that I have attempted to file the buttcap to match the stag. it still needs some more work and a lot of polishing, but here it is. 5 1/2 inch W2 blade, 416 fittings.

Will be looking forward to getting a closer look at that one Joe.

Makers post them as you get um.

Here is #4 of my Journeyman Test Knives. The 10" blade is forged from W-2, the handle is of Black Walnut from right here in Missouri, the fittings are stainless steel with the ferrule being heat colored. The overall length is 15". There is also an 18K gold pin in the handle. This one is sold to a fellow forumite.

Thanks for looking, have a great day and see you at BLADE!

I’ve built three of these knives to go to the Blade Show. All are basically the same. The other two can be seen on the Available page of my web site. www.culverart.com/knivesavail.htm

Blade Steel: 1084 & 15N20 Damascus in Rising Sun pattern.
Handle Material: Amber Stag
Fittings Material: Stainless Steel
Blade Length: 4 3/8"
Overall Length: 8 7/8"

This damascus pattern is a new one; and there is a story behind it. About a year ago, I made a damascus knife with the pattern that the Arkansas Boys call the Dog Star pattern. This knife wound up on an internet knife dealer’s site. The dealer called the pattern “Rising Sun” in the knife description. A lot of folks saw the knife and the name stuck for my rendition of this pattern. So, I decided to make a change to the pattern to make it more representative of the new name. I’ve added a couple of cuts near the spine where the rays converge to represent the sun.
Hope that you like it.

Here's a beauty. It's one of JR Cook's Arkansas Living Treasure pieces. JR describes it:

The dimensions are the same as on the original Musso Bowie.

The blade is 13-1/2" and it is 19-1/2" overall. It is 2-3/8" from spine to cutting edge. The handle is White Oak. On the original, the drawing said Oak handle. All of the fittings are brass.

On the tang nut, I did change it from a through threaded to a blind threaded tang nut. it is brass as well. The spins is also thicker on my version of the knife.

Everything else is the same down to the six pointed star with a circle and the letter J on the guard.

Nice line-up Stephan.
You have made great progress in one year.
My favorite from above is the stag fighter.

Stephan, those four will last about the first thirty minutes of the show.....maybe. What are you going to do for the rest of the time???
