Will, Stan, Cliff, thanks a ton for the offers guys. Stan, another maker has already offered to supply handle material and he asked to remain anonymous so I hadn't updated the thread yet. I really do appreciate the offer though. Maybe we can get you in on the next go around. Its super cool of you guys to offer all of this, now our guy/gal can do everything required in order to make a knife of their own. I'm really pumped to see what some of you can do with all of this. Thanks again all. Good luck.

Rob!

Indeed! I didn't want to intentionally exclude Canadian folks, Mexican folks, etc. I simpy decided to do it CONUS because I didn't want to end up making a give-away a nightmare for all parties involved. Long story short, I did a give-away once that ended up being more trouble than you can imagine because of international issues. Tell you what, jump on that thread and sign up and then sign up here as well. Be aware though, that if the international shipping rules cause problems that "I told you so"...lol:) Like I said, I did not intentionally mean to exclude you folks from other parts of the globe. I'm just a K.I.S.S. believer from tons of experience with B.O.H.I.C.A. and S.N.A.F.U.:D

"I wanna make knives." Bedpost steel wont work? How about the slats?

I see that you're brand new to the forums. I live just across the river in Portland and would be more than happy to have you visit my shop and make a few knives with my supplies and equipment to get you jump started. Just give me a call at 330-284-3103.

OK, now that's funny :D
I wanna make knives tooo! But I already have some steel and more on the way so give my chance to someone else :) You gents are pretty cool to be helping us newbies so much.

Garret, you have given me one heck of an education here! Talk about putting your money where your mouth is! While I sit around bitching, you get up and do something, and in a way that seems positive all the way around judging from the response to this thread. Your first post in this thread probably did more to help makers start off on the right foot than any of mine in the last year. The materials and manufacter seem well covered, but if I can offer any adivice at any step the winner can feel free to call on me via phone, e-mail or forum. If they opt for forum I hope that many others would pitch in and those who didn't win could follow the process and gain from it as well.

P.S. I think I would rather be a whipping boy than a guru any day;)

It's ok Garrett, I did not feel excluded. I was just stating why I did not enter and I fully understand wanting to adhere to the K.I.S.S. principle as much as possible. Good advice for just about every aspect of life. I'll jump on the Canadian offer. (thanks Rob for the link).

Thanks again for doing this for the knife community Garrett and friends.

i wanna make knives , but we have no steel for 50 miles and im stuck in 4 ft of snow with out a dam shovel but im serious we have no steel suppliers within 50 plus miles and im not sure if they have any instock. Ive gone to scrap yards and its -35c so im not unbolting leaf springs or coils in this weather. Finding steel and pin material is my biggest challenge .Idid get some brazing rod in 1/8 and 5/32.making knives from blanks is kinda like cheating saying you made a knife.JMHO

It's not cheating in my opinion. It's the way I learned how to put handles on knives back in 1992/1993. I wasn't a knifemaker as you have stated, but instead a knife assembler, however it was a very good learning experience.

i hope you let my entry into the hat for the draw i just read the dead line i really really wanna make knives lol

hey scott i ve read some of your posts and think your a stand up guy i am in that boat.I ordered a bunch of pre made blades to mess with gluing and forming handles and i totally agree its a good way to learn and get started.I just would rather make my own blades but i cant find steel thats close and im in saskatchewan so having to drive 50 miles to get steel is a little far with gas at 4 bucks a gallon too that dont help.I just have to wait til the weather breaks the last storm 2 days ago left 18 inches of snow and were in another tonight so it will be a week before i go anywhere.
