So lately something has been bugging me to come back and check things out and what do I find? Just an opportunity to obtain one fantastic and great knife is all. That and a couple of messages from folks who just don't get it and probably never will. Anyway, ORDER PLACED for sure!! Great job Spark and everyone involved. Well done! Glad to see all is alive and well.
To those who think a flipper on bearings is the hallmark of a great knife, I feel sorry for you but I just can't quite reach (long live the 7th grade, lol). There is much more to life than customizing your Xbox controller. There is more to determining value and worth than measuring how quickly something is "gone". There is significant merit in keeping the values that were prevalent in the past alive. "Capturing the aesthetics of a bygone era is no easy task" - meako. This knife, and traditionals in general typify that philosophy. That's why they are called "traditionals".

Not sure if my sarcasm meter is on the fritz, or you really believe all that. Since it has been almost 6 years since your last post in the Traditional forums it is understandable how you might think the current annual offering bears any resemblance to the old community efforts of the past.
Today we are beggars who should be grateful to pay $50-$100 over retail for whatever already planned production knife GEC decides we can buy.
Our input is limited to payment.
The meako meako passage is the last and best part of the tradition IMHO.

That said, I bought one in the presale and it is a fine knife. Except for the serial number I requested I got exactly what was promised and would probably buy the next one, if there is one.

At this point, I'm pretty sure the only way there will be another is the old way. Someone with much deeper pockets than mine will have to step up and front the money, and some dealer will have to agree to do all the heavy lifting for free. That's a lot to ask in today's economy. Back when it was less than a hundred pieces it was a labor of love. Two or three hundred pieces makes it economic suicide.

OLd_gUY OLd_gUY ,

It is great to see you back! I have always believed you have the best call name and avatar of all.

Please don’t be put off by the intense emotions expressed here. I have no desire to rehash things that have been rehashed many times over, but we have been through a lot with the Forum Knife process. I hope you begin to participate in other threads where things are more like you remember. I for one have missed your participation.

I'd say it's more like an investment into the spirit of the forums. You will note they are still available for direct purchase.

Granted, I could be biased because I've been asking for a stockman BF knife for years and was delighted once this one was announced. I've been in hog heaven since mine arrived.

Plus, Given its reception, I doubt we'll see another stockman forum knife for a long time. That is assuming there is any kind of BF knife in the future.
Yeah, for me it is only an investment if my kids are able to find someone to buy them when they have to deal with all my crap when I die. I'm not really the collect-to-sell type, I am more the collect-to-form-an-emotional-bond-to-an-inanimate-object type. Anything I don't love, I usually just give away. I don't sell hardly anything that I have collected.

Thank you for the welcome back and the kind words. And thanks to those who hit the thumbs up. Much appreciated. Sorry to hear of the probs with the Forum Knife process. There have always been bumps in the road before but apparently these have been pot holes. Overcoming those difficulties shows the tenacity and dedication of Spark and others in preserving the qualities that continue to make Blade Forums such a unique experience for all to enjoy and express their opinions.. Thank you!!
And I plan on being around, not as much as before, but every so often. Next step is to contact Jack Black..
That said, I received mine yesterday and this is one solid and impressive knife for sure. Brass liners, no blade play, good walk & talk, great fit and finish - in short everything you'd expect from GEC. Plus a well designed pin, my favorite shield AND a fantastic write-up on the back of the tube by meako (well done!).
Maybe a touchup on the strop. a little wax on the bone and she'll be pocket ready.
If anyone is on the fence, consider you have a chance to get a one of a kind GEC and support the spirit of the Forum. Pull the trigger! DO IT! You won't be sorry. I'll be ordering another one soon!
Later,
O.G.

Thanks for all the compliments! I think I’m going to give the leather dye a try sometime soon, potassium permanganate gave it a nice amber color after jigging but that has worn off with use. I’d like to see a more permanent option without having to seal the bone. Here’s a photo of the mark side!View attachment 2948168
Wow, you really have a good eye for hand jigging. That looks fantastic! And I know it's harder than it looks 😆 I've seen some pretty horrendous examples of people trying to do their own jigging 😬

I looked at plenty of examples of old Remington, Utica and Rogers bone and would like to think I landed somewhere in that ballpark! I also took a few practice passes on a scrap piece of wood before the real thing, I can’t say it did much to calm my nerves. The wood felt like mush compared to the density of the bone. I was really happy with the depth the factory jigging gave to the end result, the hardest part was getting the pattern to look random!
