Bladeforums - Best Bowie 2007

I'm not so inclined to try rational discussion with you or Mr. Brock, because I am fairly convinced that it won't work. You both seem fairly intelligent, but somewhat unhinged mentally.

Disfunctional, indeed, harummph!:D

Same cop out. Though more thought went into further explaining it. Same group think. Same empty paper sack.

I are one lone wolf....it is very, very rare that I agree with even close friends, especially about knives.

Where is the "group think" and what is your "empty paper sack" statement...what does it mean?

Hans...Awesome group shot
hey can I Get a brief synopsis of whats going on in this thread?

I'm not sure what the challenge was exactly???? That he could whack my knife with his and break mine in half??? I'd love to see that! So who's doing the video testing and where do I send the knife??? :)

You have been unable to read a single post correctly in this charade. Send your knife to the maker. He's on the I-N-T-E-R-N-E-T.

Interesting turn of events. The so-called two crazy idiots are trying to be objective and Yip Yip and the Watermelon Gang are still relying on subjectivist rants in step with the ingrained company language. As collectors of these knives I would have expected something preprinted, with scientific method and all, all ready to go for this situation. Instead, you're getting hammered like a knife because simple ego human defense mechanisms getting the best of the brightest minds on this forum. Brock is correct. Some people can't see below the surface because they haven't got a clue what is below it. And again...

Forrest Gump: I'm sorry I had to fight in the middle of your Black Panther party.

BTW, mentally unstable people don't apologize. Please misconstrue that as well.

Fair enough. Post #240.

Fair enough. Post #240.

http://www.cashenblades.com/Info/Info.html..... 1 maker....all the information you might ever want....think that he is the only one this meticulous?

Is there something that I am missing here?

This quote from Kevin's site is one of my favorites, and particularly applicable:

"The list above is not to be read in reverse, it is meant to tell you what the steels are best suited for, not what old rusty junk could be made of. The first commandment of bladesmithing is KNOW THY STEEL. Scrap or mystery steel is great for forging or grinding practice, but if you are going to heat-treat it you have to know your parameters (you have to know what it is). If you are going to take it all the way to a finished product isn’t it worth knowing it will be the best you can get when you are done with all that work? You owe it to yourself and your customers to do it right. You hear it again and again, “Old saw blades should be L6”, “leaf springs should be 5160” “files should be W2”, if there is any "shoulds" or guesses involved you have already compromised your results. Saws, springs, files etc. have all changed over the years and can have anything in them at any given manufacturers whim. Many people have been unpleasantly surprised to find that the seemingly hard objects that they made their blades out of were just surfaced hardened soft steel, a practice becoming more popular for its cost savings in industry. So don’t be surprised that if the blade you made out of old junk is, well…junk! The absolute worst reason for this practice is cost savings, as this is a very false economy. The time and materials wasted on an unacceptable blade made from mystery steel is far more expensive than the priciest steels out there. Most steel in blade size sections are surprising inexpensive and can be delivered right to your doorstep, with chemical analysis and heat treating specifications, with just one phone call."

His knives are also spectaculary beautiful...but you don't care about that.

First and only warning, kids. Be civil, or I'll shut this thread down. I've already banned dbrock for his actions.

Culpepper, I didn't mean to insult Brock or his work, but look at it this way. There's more to knifemaking than just steel and edge geometry. Ergonomics and handling characteristics also play a role in a using knife. Think of blisters, or your hand or arm getting prematurely tired from having to use a strong grip on the handle or swing a heavy blade. These are aspects of his knives that don't equal the efforts of some of the other knives pictured in this thread. To think that it's just "pretty" or fit and finish that determined the winner or finalists would be wrong, IMO.

It's interesting that the spark that ignited this is that a knife with super fit and finish is crap.

Even if it was made with known steel, in accurate time/temp controlled heat-treating environments, to stringent geometry, AND with a handle that is the result of years of testing one's own knives and consulting with other makers/users.

Yet if one is crude and thrown together... then it's a REAL knife.

I DID read that much correctly Culpepper.

It seemed like there was a lot of "put up or shut up" growing, and I was offering to put up.... even though I never started the barking. I just don't like seeing myself or my friends being put down on their quality of work because they are dedicated to producing some of THE FINEST knives available.

I'm also very bothered by the fact that this thread was started by Roger for a little fun, and it was just that. Yet somebody had to pee in the punch bowl and turn it into a personal chest pounding session.

Culpeper, you started a thread on this forum about a month ago and members responded kindly, as I would expect. Then, you became involved in this 'for fun and great information' thread and wanted an open vote, which occurred.
But, it seems that the moment your friend joined in, the negativity increased exponentially. I would hope you can see that this can be a great place to appreciate and learn a little about custom knives if given a chance. Hope you take the blinders off.

Yeah, I can see that. It's, "Culpeper". You know, there is no point looking at the chalk body outline with such embarrassing and obvious regression. Lets move on. I've had enough of West Side Story for one day.

Okay, so I made a typo.

Are you saying that's not where you and your buddy were taking this thread?

Straight to the scene of the crash? That makes perfect sense. Like I stated and you missed again. Lets move on. It's over.

Thanks for your wonderful insight Culpeper. Your most gracious capacity to discern the true nature of this situation is most appreciated.... not sure what I would have done without it.

1. Your points to Nick are not clear...OK? He is a really nice guy, much beloved here, because he makes beautiful knives, that work well, and he is genuine...you should be nice to him, he will return in kind.

2. You and your newly banned buddy called this thunder down on yourselves...you don't dictate on the Custom Forum, Culpeper...If you don't like it..leave, don't come back....I for one will not shed a tear. You might try some other approach if you ARE going to stay here.

3. Randall Knives are hand made...and they are fine knives...I have had two on order since 2003, and am very much looking forward to them....because they were made with all the bells and whistles, and had to wait those 4 years....might not use them....would this offer me less enjoyment from them?

Congratulations, Burt Foster...you very much deserved the kudos.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.

Maybe you can convince Mr. Wheeler its over.
