Bladeforums - Best Bowie 2007

Unless I'm mistakened Roger, maker's are invited to nominate finalist and vote?

Seems the trend so far, is just collectors.

I see nothing wrong with a maker or collector voting for their knife. As a matter of fact, the maker and the owner should know more about a particular knife than anyone else that's just viewing a photo.

Correct - makers are VERY welcome to nominate finalists. I am sure we could all benefit from their unique insight.

The blades shown here are all awesome and it's no easy task trying to pick 7 of them. My own simple tastes are, for the most part, reflected in my choices. This is a great thread. Thanks for opening it to all of us.

In no particular order:

#1 Wheeler - Clean simple lines, great blade and handle

#1 Foster - Stainless over carbon. Innovative, the blade is outrageous ( I love it), great design on the guard and handle.

#1 Bradshaw - Grapes of Wrath. Beautiful art piece, great Damascus, the guard and engraving are exquisite.

#9 Rhea - Simple and clean. Great Damascus and handle, nice flow.

#25 Sfreedo - The integral guard is outstanding and the gold maple leaves are a super touch.

#25 Andrews - Beautiful blade shape, great Damascus, beautiful flow.

#99 Pendray - Awesome blade, a stout knife with a great flow.

These arent ranked in any order Im not able, but

My selections would probably differ if I had the opportunity to handle the knives like many of you, but FWIW based solely on eye appeal:

1) Dean - #31 Feather Damascus w/gold inlay and engraving
2) Fisk - #83 Ladder Damascus and stag
3) SFreddo - #181 Damascus stag integral
4) Burt Foster - #1 Stainless over carbon
5) Ruth - #81
6) Siiska - #2
7) Hancock #3

Peter

Peter, there is no post 181 (yet :)) - could you please clarify which Sfreddo integral you are voting for?

Thanks,

Roger

Tough to narrow to just 7!!

In order of thread, and hangin' on to 'bowie image':

1) Andrews mammoth ( and I do mean mammoth!!) S-guard...Post # 1

2) Dean El Diablo...Post # 4

3) Knight awesomeness...Post # 5

4) Wheeler award winner...Post # 6

5) Cashen beauty...Post # 6

6) Hanson award winner...Post # 21 (and again in Post # 103)

7) Andrews damascus...pure beauty...Post # 25

Okay, I'm done. Will try to rest up for the final tally!!

Andrews S Guard #1 ........ the Damascus and Stag is close but went for this due to the complexity of build.
Knight Maple & Steel #5 - perfect form and execution. Who ever owns this, please email me!
Sfreddo Integral #27 - vision and technical ability matched!
Siska #2 - WOW!
Brend #105 - This is a knife I would seriously like to own!
BFBowie #3 - for all it means, and the fact that its pretty nice too!
Hancock #3 ....... I cannot find anything wrong with this one, and the image just cannot convey the presence and the sense that this knife carries with it the history and experiences of blades from down the centuries!

ok here are my thoughts on the top knives:

post#1-burt foster laminated bowie-wicked blade shape that comes alive with the etched damascus underneath the stainless steel....beautiful ivory as usual and nice fitings

post#4-harvey dean el diablo.....unbelieveable control of the damascus pattern....nice engraving on the guard....what else could you ask for from one of the best

post#5-jd smith bowie.....unique guard....i like the high layer damascus look....with the really tight pattern to it.....it's definately not the cut and paste look alot of bowies have....one of a kind for sure

post#9-lin rhea....a real gentleman's knife if you ask me...superb damascus....very nice handle material.....it begs to be held and fondled

post#41-fisk persian.....a uniques ylying to me....i am not a collector of fisk knives but i have never stopped on a page more than once to look at one....definately unique looking.....if i went back to look at it that many times -it's on the list

post#82...wild goo collaboration by tai goo and wild rose.....a beautiful example of a period piece....i am a little biased because i own this one....my best friend ahs the other.....if you saw it you would swear it is 200 years old....everything down to every little strand of hair and cones ahnging on the sheath.....antiquing on the guard and buttcap.....a piece that couldn't have come out more perfect n my eyes

post#88-mike ruth.....from the beautiful shell guard to the breathtaking damascus this knife has alot to it....i am a sucker for a beautiful guard

this was really hard to pick seven knives....basically i looked at it like this....if i could have my pick of any of these knives for my collection t have.....they are also the knives i just was shocked to finally see pics of.....i could probably tell you what i had for lunch the day i saw each picture......ryan

No Particular Order..
Post#1 Burt Foster- Laminated/mammoth
Post#7 Don Hanson- "S Guard" (favorite)
Post#21 Don Hanson- Guild show, best art knife bowie

Top 5 unchanged from my original post.

1. Harvey Dean, Feather and Stag El Diablo Post#4, stunning control of the feather pattern Damascus, line drive homerun

2. Don Hanson lll, Sinistre Post#4, more flow than the Amazon river, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful

3. Burt Foster, Laminate Post#1, a marriage of great innovative construction and of stunning materials

4. Rodrigo Sfreddo, Maple Leaf Integral Post#25

5. Nick Wheeler, Peck Award Post#6, it is absolutely alive in your hand, impecable finish, killer hamon

------------------------------

6. Russ Andrews, Damascus Post#25, resistance is futile, simply superb

7. Matt Lamey, Ironwood Post#6, sharper than sh*t, looks and feels great, terrific flow

That was VERY difficult indeed!

Honorable mention: The Hancock, the Cashen, the other Wheeler, the other Dean, and about THREE Hansons

Ones that really caught my eye in no particular order
1. Harvey Dean, feather pattern and stag El Diablo
2. Nick Wheeler, blackwood bowie
3. Jerry Fisk, Gambler bowie
4. Don Hanson III, Sinistre
5. Don Hanson III, the S guard high layer count piece that he did for the NY show.
6. Hancock bowie....I MUST find out how to do a buttcap like that.......eventually
7. Andrews stag bowie
I would like to give an honorable mention to the Bill Bagwell carbon steel bowie. I actually like it better than the damascus piece and that second sheath is really neat looking. Maybe not the "best" of the year, but just a good, solid old school bowie that seems to do everything just about right. Also one for the BF bowie. Great piece for a good cause.

5. Don Hanson III, the "scratched" bowie with the red mammoth ivory handle that got left out of his MS judging.

Could you direct me to the post # on that one, Joe?

Thanks for your contribution.

Roger
