Here is one by Tom Ferry and one that is a collaboration between Tom and Dave Lisch.

The Damascus on the Ferry is so subtle and "shimmer -y" that you really can't appreciate it until you have it in your hand

The Ferry/Lisch is a little "bolder" :p

please, try and follow the dang guidelines! They're pretty simple. Do a little research within this thread and make sure that you are not duplicating photos and do not vote until Roger closes the contest to new submissions!
I don't mean to be a prick, but c'mon!

guys - please:

1) don't vote until submisions are closed;

2) don't reproduce photos of knives already submitted as it is going to make the voting much more difficult when it starts.

We will let you know when submissions are closed and voting begins.

The enthusiasm is appreciated and the eagerness understandable. :)

gary, if you would delete that post and hold fire until the voting starts i would be most grateful.

Roger

Simmer down now Lorien, Even the finest horse races have a few "chomping at the bit" and shouting for their favorite horse. :)

And since Sam doesn't speak much English, we can cut him some slack. Now the rest of y'all.... ;)

Roger

what you say is true, Bruce. However, the people who study the photo finish and declare a winner in a horse race are not at all affected by those who place their bets, (hopefully) and they are also renumerated for their services. The other big difference is that every contributor to this thread is/can also/be a judge. It is up to Roger, (and me) to ensure that an accurate tally is made so that everyone gets a fair shake. Simply following Roger's instructions is a good way to help keep us from making mistakes.

It may not seem like a big deal to a lot of people that this annual contest exists and many quite possibly take it for granted, but I guarantee you that if Roger had not been so willing to volunteer his time, this contest would not happen. I think it's important for folks to keep that in mind, and now that I've volunteered to help, I have a much better understanding of how much time and effort is required to come to an accurate final count.

Please everyone, just help us out here. Read the instructions and try to make sure that your favourite knife hasn't already been posted. When you post multiple knives, number them and put the name of the maker there. When you vote, (once Roger gives the go ahead) reference the number of the post, the number of the knife and the name of the maker. It's not hard. Not nearly as hard as counting your votes- that I guarantee you!

I know there are more great bowies out there guys. Get 'em in - submissions won't stay open a whole bunch longer. I don't like to rush to close submissions because lots of people are away for different segments of the holiday stretch, and invariably, some good ones come in right under the wire.

But don't be shy - fancy or plain, show the ones you liked a lot from this past year.

Roger

Human nature.... In the excitement people aren't going to read every post--even the first. :D

Consider editing the title temporarily:

Bladeforums BEST BOWIES - 2010 Edition (Display thread - No voting YET!)

Coop

Good idea Coop - but how do I edit the title? When I click the ediit function at the bottom of the first post, it opens up the content for editing, but not the title.

Roger

1. What is the rule about sheaths, should these be included as a consideration - or basing it strictly on the knife itself?

2. What about best knife "photograph" submitted? - i'd like to hear Coop's top three-five picks, with explanation. Purely on photography. (if it wouldnt detract too much)

3. How many selections are allowed in the voting?

3. How many selections are allowed in the voting?

1. Let me be clear - we're voting on the knife. That said, it is not for me to tell you how to vote or why.

2. If Coop wants to share that with is when voting is done, I'd like to hear it too. :) But I'm not keep on a bunch of cross-voting for different things.

3. Five finalists will be selected - more only in the event of ties (that has happened). Each of us may vote for up to 7 finalists. You don't have to select that many, but you can't vote for more.

Roger

VOTING HAS NOT STARTED YET. :)

My lord, I don't envy you guys in having to make choices. Every single example pictured is so incredibly beautiful that I'm astounded by the creativity and craftsmanship.

Roger

After selecting "edit", select "go advanced" and a blank title box will appear. Insert new title.

David, nothing's keeping you from starting a "Best Knife Photo of 2010" thread. :)

Thanks - thread title edited.

At present, I don't see nominations remaining open much past the rest of the day today - so look for submissions to close and voting to open some time tomorrow - Dec 30th - morning-ish.

Okay - so how about a few more bowies?

1. Karl Andersen - Wispy Twist Bowie

This gorgeous combination of chatoyant twist damascus and Mesquite burl won Best in Show at the Ohio Classic.

2. Matt Lamey

You know how I can tell there are a bunch of bowie fans sleeping out there? We are 5 pages into this thread, and this is the first Lamey knife submitted? You kiddin me? All this guy does is kick out bada$$ bowies. This damascus number relocated northward, and it is NOT plying nicely with the other bowies:

3. Kyle Royer

Not Kyle's most elaborate piece to be sure - but to my eye, this one is locked down tight.

4. Bill Buxton

Bill Buxton joined the MS ranks this year, and celebrated in style with this - his first MS-stamped bowie:

6. Stuart Branson

Cool contemporary Fowler style:

7. Tad Lynch

Stagalicious goodness here:

8. Dan Farr

Classic C. Robbin Hudson style and a Father's Day gift to me from my daughter:

Okay gents - search your hard drives and get those last submissions in!

Let me point out and clarify the obvious: This IS a photo contest as well.

Not by design, but by necessity. We are viewing and choosing a 'Best Bowie' through our computer screen on a two-dimensional screen. No different than movies and magazines. 'Best' is defined any number of ways, not the least of which is aesthetic appeal.

(Edited out distracting sidebar comparison)

'Best' is also a qualification that handling can only help judgement. So photos, no matter how glorious, can't tell the whole story. I understand this.

Like some of the knives without a professional photograph. They can be the underdog.

That said, those knives that the Maker/Collector have spent the time getting a professional image enjoy an advantage. A well-earned advantage. No apologies needed. These participants are understanding that promotion is part and parcel of building a solid knifemaking career and status to elevate them to 'Best'.

David, I'd love to come in later and offer my A+ opinions on photo work that works for me. I would choose a couple from each of the OTHER photographers and point out why an aspect looks great. I would leave out my own entries, although I do have clear favorites.

1, Brion Tomberlin. Here is a great bowie that Brion made of damascus and desert ironwood I believe. This one feels good in the hand also.

Here are some more great pieces, 2010 was a good year for nice knives.
