1) Nick doesn't make many knives and the damascus ones are precious few.
This knife is perfection in handle making IMO.

Thanks for the additional submissions guys.

LAST CHANCE EVERYONE! Submissions close and voting starts in the morning (wait for the announcement, please :) ). Super tough choices ahead.

Roger

Okay gang, we are now closed to additional entries - let the selection of finalists begin!

Once again, a BIG THANK YOU for all the nominations. And a special thanks to those makers who posted up their work – the most we have had to date. This is a spectacular assembly of knives by any measure – and no doubt the decisions will be tough. Each year, this thread is what you make it - and you all have made it pretty great.

The fun continues with what I think will be the hardest and most interesting part - narrowing it down to five finalists. The procedure will be the same as before:

1) Each member may submit up to 7 suggested finalists. You don't have to submit as many as 7, but don't submit any more than 7. Please take your time to carefully review all the knives.

2) Please include the post number where your selected knife can be found, and the number of the knife within that post if more than one knife is presented therein - this will help clear up any uncertainty in the case where there are multiple knives by a given maker among the initial entries. For example - a say post number 30 has 4 knives. You want the third. Put "Post 30, #3". AND DON'T FORGET TO INCLUDE THE NAME OF THE MAKER!

3) Your order or selection doesn't matter - one vote per knife up to seven, each vote counts.

4) Please feel free to include a few words about what appeals to you about any given selection. THIS is what makes the selection process most interesting.

5) When all votes are in, we add up the numbers (each time a knife is put forward by someone as a finalist, that effectively counts as one vote for that knife) and the top 5 will be voted on by polll in a new thread.

Roger

PS - If anything is unclear, please ask early.

************************************************************************************************************************

My votes follow:

1. Post# 47, Knife #1 – Ridrigo Sfreddo Moghul Fighter - All of the Sfreddo submissions are spectacular, but this is the one I would pick up and take home if given the choice. Great lines and a masterful control of the steel. I’m looking at that blade in two dimensions, but my eyes see three. Or four.

2. Post #12, Knife #1 – Jerry Fisk Southwest Artifact Bowie - As much as I love Jerry’s personal cutter, I couldn’t help but cast my vote for this big bold and entirely compelling bowie.

3. Post #1, Knife #6 – Nick Wheeler W2 Fighter – A breakout year for Nick with a record number of nominations – Bravo! I’m torn between this one and Coop’s piece. I give this one the nod because I think it is about as good as a knife gets in a wood / carbon fighter.

4. Post #2, Knife#6 – Larry Fuegen Ivory / Damascus Bowie. When does Larry’s work ever come up short of wonderfully impressive? Never, that’s when. This piece won Best of Show amongst some truly outstanding competition at the ABS Show in San Antonio this year. It’s not hard to see why. Just look at that exquisite carved, engraved handle frame. The carved ivory handle with subtle gold accent is a study in elegance. And I haven’t even got to the terrific damascus blade and sculpted fittings. Love this knife.

5. Post 27, Knife #1 – Don Hanson III Damascus / Ivory “Flow” Bowie – Just a compelling study in understated elegance, this piece is overpowered neither by see-it-from-across-the-room damascus nor neon ivory. It’s the lines that speak, and man, what a story they tell. Visual balance rarely translates so literally into physical balance – and having held this piece, I can tell you it nails both. As if all that weren’t enough, that ghostly blend of damascus and hamon would require the skills of a poet to be fairly described. I usually struggle to pick my favourite Hanson submission. Not this year.

6. Post #1, Knife #1 – Russ Andrews San Mai Subhilt - - As a general rule, I’m a sucker for amber stag and damascus. But both blade and handle here are something special. The fine detail work in the fitment of the stag into meticulously crafted ferrules, and the terrific control evident in the san mai steel of the blade, all wrapped up in what is a signature piece for this maker. It’s not easy to come out with a design that is instantly recognizable as “yours” these days. Russ has certainly accomplished that here.

7. Post #27, knife #2 - Dave Lisch Flying Dragon Damascus Bowie – Did I mention I was a sucker for amber stag and damascus? The damascus here is absolutely fantastic and the lines utterly crisp. A breakout piece for Dave.

I wish I had another three slots. Or ten. But there you have it. Have at the voting guys, and have fun!

Roger

Well I am as ready to go as ever. Again so many excellent knives.

1.Post 47, Knife # 1 - Rodrigo Sfreddo Moghul
Not much to say that we have not already heard about Rodrigo. To me this is his finest piece in 2010.

2.Post 4, Knife # 4 - Mike Ruth Jr. "Ruthless"
Still one of the finest bowies I have ever seen. Mike hit this out of so many parks and just on a challenge.

3.Post 2, Knife # 6 - Larry Fuegen Bowie
Another Larry Fuegen masterpiece. The wrap does it for me as well as the perfect execution

4.Post 4, Knife # 2 - Tom Ferry Persian
If Tom does not do it all as well as anyone out there then I do not know who does. This knife is sleek with the coolest steel around.

5.Post 4, Knife # 3 - Terry Vandeventer Clamshell S-Guard
Amazing steel, amazing filework, amazing ivory do not know what else to say. I think this is Terry's fines bowie to date.

6.Post 4, Knife # 1 - JR Cook #9 2010 ALT
One of the best executed bowies I have ever seen. JR's steel is just great and talk about a different look. Is that not what it is all about, raising the bar. This knife is spectacular in every way and yes quite different from the norm.

7.Post 64, Knife # 1 - Don Hanson Sub-Hilt
I can never leave Don out of any knife competition. This is the piece that still has me bummed about missing the Jerry Fisk micro show. Don at his finest to me.

Going to be a tough competition, I know I could easily add a half dozen more and everyone of them deserve to win.

Okay, let me start off this elimination process;) I've decided to cast my votes to different makers (so no multiple knives from one maker). In order as they appeared in this thread.

1. Post 1 Knife #5 Rodrigo Sfreddo Dirk. It was between the Moghul fighter and this one. I decided for this one because I think this dirk is just a tad more elegant.

2. Post 2 Knife #1 John White Legacy Series. My list wouldn't be complete without one of John's knives. I picked this one for its amazing engraving by Brian Hochstrat.

3. Post 2 Knife #4 Wolfgang Loerchner SF Bowie. To see such a beautiful example of a SF Bowie from a maker like Loerchner is a real pleasure.

4. Post 2 Knife #6 Larry Fuegen Bowie. What's more to say then WOW. This is my favourite among my contenders. Larry for me is the most versatile and talented maker of this day and age!!

5. Post 4 Knife #7 John Horrigan Laminate Bowie. What a package, not only great looking steel, but a cool looking Bowie, great sheaths and to top it of a cool looking box.

6. Post 41 Knife #3 Bruce Bump. I had to choose from several of his amazing knives, but I came up with this one because this one spoke to me the most.

Oh, by the way did I mention that I really like my knives to be on the more eleborate side of things:D;)

Marcel

went loopy looking over the great submissions, so much good stuff(of course it is a beauty contest!:D):

Post #7-1 Burt Foster Laminated Bowie-great blade shape, stag and feel in the hand.

Post#12-1 Jerry Fisk NLT #7-Great use of handle material, compelling damascus and of course, Jerry Fisk made it.

Post #14-2 Bruce Bump Fighter-This is a smooth flowing, unique design. IMO, this example is the best one Bruce made this year, handle material, guard and blade all work together beautifully.

Post #20-2 Adam DesRosiers Damascus Bowie-The way the damascus and ivory handle complement each other is staggering, as is the overall knife design.

Post #27-1 Don Hanson Damascus Bowie-Subtle damascus, hardening line and poiinty, sexy blade shape does it for me.

Post #27-2 Dave Lisch Damascus Bowie-BEST LISCH KNIFE EVER.

Post #103 Nick Wheeler Damascus Bowie/Fighter-I'm real partial to this look, and Nick might have made the best one yet.

Honorable mention-45-2 Queesenberry double edged fighter-really something there.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

After some consternation, I have pared down my choices to the following:

Post#12 1) Jerry Fisk - Artifact Southwest bowie

Post#2 1) John White Legacy series bowie

Post#47 1) Rodrigo Sfreddo - Moghul fighter

This was the toughest year to choose. I initially selected 14 knives, copied the pictures to a folder, and viewed them MANY times to pare down the choices. Once I got to ten, it became EXTREMELY difficult to reduce the choice to seven!

2010 was a fantastic year for bowies!

Peter

As they appear. No comments because none are needed. You can see that I like pretty traditional stuff. Except for Sfreddo, he is just out there.
Post 1, #5 - Rodrigo Sfreddo
Post 2, #5 - Don Hanson III
Post 4, #3 - Terry Vandeventer
Post 4, #5 - Ron Newton - D-Guard
Post 13, #2 - John White - Dog Bone
Post 41, #3 - Bruce Bump
Post 50, #5 - Brian Thie - Searles

My votes:

1. Post #42 ~ #2 Gudy Van Poppel. Everything is right on this one, damascus, mammoth, embellishments. And I own it!:D

2. Post #01 ~ #5 Rodrigo Sfreddo.
Everything that man makes is spectacular.

No comment, very nice piece.

5. Post #27 ~ #2 David Lisch. For the beautiful damascus!
