BladeForums BEST BOWIE - 2012 - Voting Closed - Finalists Selected!

I love the Best Bowie event every year, but I was wondering-what about Best Bladeforums Knife contest in the future? Open the field up to all types. Just a thought.

have at er!

Hi David,

I really wanted to do a 'Best Folder' thread, too. I chatted with Roger about this. That said, to do it RIGHT, it takes planning and energy, and a format.

What about all the smaller knives? Hunters, Utilities? You're right, them too.

Does a hard-use framelock folder 'compete' against an Italian master's with engraving? You can see where this starts getting complicated.

Do we need a 'contest' to choose an overall winner, or a year-ending Gallery? Best of 2012?

I gave up. I'm working hard this week.

Which leads me to my next comment:

BenB: In entertainment; 'Always leave them wanting more', in auctions; avoid running too long, and never overcook popcorn. Posting a photo or three takes five minutes max?

I defer to Roger's advice. :)

Here's one that I couldn't find the picture of for my initial posting that was one of my favorites:

Definitely my favorite thread of every year! Many thanks for the nominations and the kinds words fellas, it's an honor just to be included in this thread. SOOOO MANY BEAUTIFUL KNIVES!!!!

????!!! Just isn't so....

I thought I saw John White post some of his own knives, I use John just as an example. I feel quite confident to say that John works on only one level

The highest level. Any Bowie john made in 2012, even those he chooses to post up himself, are more than worthy of submission to this thread. The same can be said of of so many more

incredible craftsmen/artists that chose to post their own work! :D

This is jus an awesome thread. Thank you all and keep em coming.

And this is just one person's opinion, but if you have to submit your own work, it probably isn't the best of 2012. Really, not only in knives but in all fields, if you are doing the best work, others will speak for you.

Will someone please put a Matt Bailey or three in here? His stuff deserves some face-time here I think...
Find his photos. Right click and copy the image URL. Save them, and then post in here: #1, #2, #3, etc. :D

Do your buddy a favor. He's hoping you'll do this.

Awesome thread on an awesome bun with a side of awesome sauce! :D

I must thank 2knife for for including one of my knives. Not that it is on the same level as most in here hence my feeling a little embarrassed to be in such company. :o
But I must say that a little part of me is a very happy camper. :D Does this make me vain. :o
Now I am off to save a great many inspiring pics.

^ I thought it had been posted Mike, killer knife! Must've mixed it up with that Hancock, sorry buddy ;)

A last one i think, quite different than my copper but still a Sam...

Any reason why this can't stay open until near the end of the year? At least through the weekend so the working stiffs have time to post!

Hi Ben - it's not written in stone, but generally we start on Boxing Day and try to wrap up by New Year's Day. The two rounds of voting (for finalists, then for the overall winner) take a couple of days each. We've had pretty strong nominations today. I'd certainly consider leaving it open tomorrow (Saturday) with voting for the finalists starting Sunday, if nominations are still coming in. If things have kind petered out on that score, then it's time to move on. I'll see where we're at tomorrow morning.

Hi David - while the Best Bowie thread covers essentially any medium-to-large fixed blade, it does leave out a huge chunk of the custom knife field. I've had suggestions in the past for Best Folder and Best Hunter and I think that these (and likely others) are all worthwhile. It's a matter of a) guaging interest among the forum membership and b) getting volunteers to manage each additional thread (it's more work than it looks, particularly come voting time).

I think it's a worthy subject for discussion in its own thread - I had actually thought of starting one in the aftermath of Best Bowie - but anyone is free to get that going. If we can get a consensus and decide how to proceed for next year, then people will have a heads-up on what pics to file away throughout the year for the big end-of-year bash.

Two issues I see - if you add two or three more categories, there are probably still a half-dozen more than some will want to see included. And if you do a catch-all best overall knife, you're going to see most of the Best Bowie knives duplicated in that thread. If I were to conceptualize an ideal - we'd have 4 threads max, then select from the winners of those (or maybe from among all finalists in each category?) an overall Best of Bladeforums winner.

Anyway - good question and lots of food for thought.

Can't believe I forgot this one - and it's my knife to boot! :o

Burt Foster Half-Light Fighter

Burt's Description:

The blade is forged to shape from ladder-pattern damascus. By
forged to shape I mean not only the profile, but the blade bevels as well. That
does two distinct things to the pattern. It means it appears tighter hear the
edge, but every time the hammer hits the steel, it permanently distorts the
pattern just a little so that tiny waves appear in the steel that are impossible
to capture with a camera, but these little waves shimmer when turned in the
light - almost like a holograph. in keeping with the true nature of a fighter,
the long clip on this knife is sharpened.

The guard is also ladder pattern damascus with a longer than
normal curved point. The handle is African Blackwood with six little domed
nickel silver pins. At the butt of the handle, I have carved what has become my
signature detail that I put on special knives.
