Bladeforums Best Hunter - 2016. FINALISTS CHOSEN

Like Matt, I actually found this harder than the bowie selection - and I found that REALLY hard.

My 7:

Post 5, #1 - Gergory / Doyle Collaboration - I want this knife. In a sheath. On my hip. NOW.

Post 6, #7 - Karl Andersen Bakelite - Classic Andersen style and I just love me some Bakelite.

Post 12, #1 - Russ Andrews Burgundy Micarta - A great "one knife" - looks to be ready for any task for many generations. Danbo isn't the only one who loves this knife.

Post 15, #5 - Sam Lurquin Ivory Integral - I love all the integrals, but love this one best of all.

Post 16, #1 - Will Morrison - I could go on ad nauseam about the importance of lines, or I could just point to this picture.

Post 26, #1 - D. Lisch W2 over Damascus - "One knife" - the presentation grade edition.

Post 37, # 1 - Fisk Because NLT Sendero.

Post 16, #1, Morrison. My favourite hunter of the year. Great blade shape, perfect guard, proportioned handle. The whole package just works.

As in the Bowie thread, the rest is just too tough to call. So many great entries. I like pretty much every knife listed, and all look superbly useable. I just can't eliminate enough of them to come up with six more votes, so I'm going with the one standout.

Great thread! Makes me want to go out and make more, and make them better! So much inspiration here.

Post 35-1 Markman. His knives have been an inspiration to me sence I was first trying to find my own style

37-1 Fisk. One definition of perfection. What I strive for.

25-1 Doyle, simple clean, nothing more, nothing less than a ideal hunter

44-3 Matthew Gregory. This one surprises me. I usually like a little more bling, but this one trips my trigger.

46-1 Adam DesRosiers. So cool. Great forging, complex, and simple in the same breath

32-3 Haley DesRosiers. Same as above. Talented couple!

15-5 Sam Lurquin. Aggressive and beautiful, killer lines (as usual)

Alright I'll play. These are ALL worth a vote but I'll follow the rules

1) Ben Seward - post # 39 - Simply beautiful and the materials combined for a perfect user hunter. This one made me go WOW.

2) Marc Aldrich - post 1 - # 3 - Form and function perfectly matched. Very subtle and nice detailing too.

3) Lin Rhea, Stag hunter - post 7 # 1, Slender/Stag/Serrations

4) Lurkin - post 15 # 1 - Another WOW. This is such a lovely knife. You can tell I am in to understated elegance

5) John M Cohea - post # 17 - Damascus Puukko "with walrus ivory, mammoth ivory and copper spacers handle.9" OAL" I don't typically like damascus blades but this Puukko comes together so perfectly that the damascus can be overlooked. The sheath certainly enhances this modern interpretation of a classic form.

6) John Doyle - post 1 # 5 - I own this knife so I must vote for it for the same reasons I chose to buy it - IT IS A SUBTLE BEAUTY. Looks far better in the hand than in the photo. John has offered up a few of its cousins in this thread for your consideration but this one wins to me because of the classic Doyle details but also its subdued refinement.

7) R Appleby - post 11 # 2 - Amber Stag Hunter - I think it is a perfectly detailed little knife.

Good luck to all.

Seward, 1,4. Classic hunter, clean lines, killer ironwood
Rhea, 7,1. Again, classic lines. Love the stag. Wouldn't be scared to use this one.
Lurquin, 15,1. Dark and creepy. I like the dark textures and tones on this one.
Morrison 16, 1. Ultra clean.
Doyle, 25,1. I like his guarded versions better, and the sharp clean contrast between the G10 and brass.
Fisk, 37, 1. Because, Jerry Fisk. It's the most embellished uber-hunter in the bunch.
Seward, 39,1. I voted for this construction in the bowie contest as well. His skills at checkering have come a long way.

So many excellent knives, very difficult to choose!

In no particular order:

Post 5, #1 - John Doyle/Matt Gregory
I like pretty much most of what John does. I do prefer the ones with guards. I don't know who did what parts of the knife but it's a great collab and the results speak for themselves.

Post 15, #4 - Claude Bouchonville
I love this design from Claude. He can size it up and call it a fighting knife or bowie. He can size it down and call it a hunter. It just works visually.

Post 16, #1 - Will Morrison
It doesn't matter what he makes. It's always about the lines and superior craftsmanship.

Post 20, #1 - Marc Aldrich
If I may be so bold, I just like this one. It feels great and works great. It has pretty lines and I like the muted patina.

Post 25, #1 - John Doyle
What can I say about John's work that hasn't been said before. The guy just makes a pretty little hunter, end of story.

Post 36, #8 - Sandro Boeck
Beautiful lines and tasteful details.

Post 51, #2 - Ben Breda
He just has a sense of line that resonates with me. Great proportions and details.

Malosh post 21, 1. My knife, I love it, I've used it, works great.

Mirabile post 15, 3. Great maker, I would LOVE to have it.

Doyle post 41, 1. I love a guardless hunter, this is a good one.

Fisk post 37, 1. Awesome piece.

Rhea post 7, 1. Classic, I'd love to skin some game with one.

Aldrich post 1, 3. Pure hunter, done really well.

Andersen post 6, 4. Karl's hunters are great.

Karl Andersen - Post 6 #12 - All Karl's Hunters are lookers however you can bet they perform as good as any and better than most of Hunters listed here. #12 appeals to me the most.

Cody Hofsommer - Post 9 #2 - This is a beautiful Hunter, nicely executed feather pattern, beautifully figured redwood burl and the perfect guard to highlight both. Plus Cody has one of the coolest makers's marks in custom knives IMO.

Clauda Bouchonville - Post 15 #4 - Great lines/flow, gorgeous guard, and a handle that's as spectacular from an ergonomic design perspective as it is beautiful.

Jerry Fisk - Post 37 #1- A beautiful example of Functional Art. And as "pretty" as it is, this Sendero Hunter will perform as a Hunting knife at the highest level.

Adam DesRosiers - Post 46 #1 - This hunter has it all in my opinion. Great hunter design, great stag (only stag hunter Adam has ever created), great damascus and great execution of one of the most difficult builds in the competition.

I had to rush on the Bowie thread due to being so busy. I was able to spend a little more time on the hunters. In order of the way they were nominated;

Post 7-1 Rhea. This one just begs to be taken to the woods. I will volunteer, I would just love to get this one into some game.

Post 15-1 Lurquin. This is my favorite hunter that I have seen of Sam's. He nailed it.

15-4 Bouchonville. This one is so uniquely recognizable as Claude's work. This thing has style without a doubt.

37-1 Fisk. For all the obvious reasons. The Fisk Sendaro is iconic.

39-1 Seward. Inovation and beauty. Ben has a way of taking a crazy idea and turning it into something special. And the checkering!

41-1 Doyle. John could probably make an outstanding hunter in his sleep, never seen one of them I didn't like. The Koa is so perfect on this one and John always executes superbly.

46-1 Adam DesRossiers. I just love integral hunters and Stag and great butt caps, when they are all on one knife it can come together to be awesome.
