BladeForums.com Survival Knife & Kit project

Jelly balls aren't going in, but I can add in Tinderquik no problem. Water tabs are smart but they aren't a 100% kill all (better than nothing though) which is why I'd prefer a cup or other solution for boiling water for redundancy.

Understood.;) I guess I was talking about adding my own personalized kit to what you already are proposing.

I have what I need for boiling water, and tinder. But no matter what I'm in. Extra kit is never a bad thing.

About how much $$$ are we talking here. I won't hold ya to whatever number you say just yet, I just want to have a rough estimate so I can force myself to not buy a new knife just yet :D.

Retail on the RC-6 is $199.00. Retail on the RC-4 is $158.
Retail on the Survival Sheath is $50.
Retail on the Pocket Survival Pack is $33
Retail on the Thermobivvy is $33, alternatively we can do the Heat Sheets for $6
Retail on the Aquamira Tablets is $14.99
Retail on the Military grade 550 is $11
Retail on the TOPS Saw & Fire kit is $21
Total up the retail on this stuff and you are looking at $367 for the RC-6 and $327 for the RC-4 and that's without water carrying or pouches for holding this stuff. Maxpedition has a Nalgene they sell for $8.88 and pouch with storage for $36.99, so that's another $46 before a cup, which I still have yet to find a wholesale source for.

Ideally, I'd like to bring this entire project in at under $250 for the RC-6 kits and under $220 for the RC-4 kits. We're not going to be able to add much more without hitting exceeding these prices rapidly.

As more stuff is added, the price increases. I'm not going to custom tailor each individuals kit - There will be a set price on kits with and without knives, and that's it. Past that, there needs to be a group consensus on what the kit needs.

I am in for sure........I hope that by the time it comes to order ,I will be in for one each RC-6 & RC-4 .....LOL !

Well I'll throw it back out there. I have a lot of the necessary kit already. I would like to see a bare bones kit.

RC-6
Sheath
Tops saw and fire kit
Pocket survival pack

Hell I'd be in with just the knife, sheath, and the pocket kit.

Katadyn water purification tabs are 99.99% + kill all micro organisms and virus. you only get 20-30 tabs wrapped in foil individually, treats 1 liter per tab.

Any chance of offering the rc3?

J.

This is my first post in this thread and my two cents.

I'm with tarmix101 on this, I think he has the right idea.

I like the Bare Bones kit idea as well.

It keeps the price point in range of most and when adding accessories, it would be almost impossible to come to an agreement, let alone, I think most of us have stuff laying around to outfit the pack the rest of the way.

Besides that I like this Idea of the PSK Project Spark, I think if you can keep the price down it will open this opportunity to many more of the BF members.

I don't if you are working with volume discounts or not.

Just a thought.

IMHO:) 555

I like this bare bones kit, but would it be possible to get Bladeforums.com etched somewhere on it. I think that would be pretty nifty.

That was my basic reasoning behind a bare bones kit. Just apparently needed someone else to explain it better than me. ;):D

This kit isn't going to be the kitchen sink. I'd love pen flares and radios, but that'd put it outside the price options of most people, so I'd rather stick with simple. As is, there will be the following:

  • Knife (RC-6 or RC-4) with Spec Ops Brand Survival Sheath - Knife group ;)
  • TOPS Firestarting kit and folding saw (all will fit in pouch of the survival sheath with room) - Fire group 1, Signal Group 1 (whistle), Knife Group 2
  • 550 Cord, 50-100 feet. - Cord group 1
  • Adventure Medical Kits Ritter PSP and AMK Emergency Bivvy - Signal Group 2, Fire Group 2, Shelter group 1

Still needed: Water collection & preparation. Can be Nalgene or Camelbak style bottle, preferably with some sort of metal cup. I still need to find a wholesaler for Nalgene cups. Pocket or pouch to carry same, and additional pocket for PSP & bivvy. Perhaps a bandoleer style carrier that can carry the sheath, PSP & bivvy pocket, and the Nalgene pouch.

SPARK, Campmor carries a water bottle pocket/holder that is made of nylon fabric with a nice big nylon belt loop on the back. You can put a cup in and a Nalgene into that to carry it. Fill the Nalgene with all of your 'supplies' and you're go to go:thumbup:

Note on the AMK Bivy, you'll need to jump in in your skivvies in anything but below freezing weather. If not you risk wetting out all of your day clothes with the condensation produced overnight by breathing and body heat in the bag. Even after cutting a 4" slit in the foot end of mine it hardly helped to ventilate it. You could probably get by with a cheaper 2person emergency blanket for $5-6 from campmor. Ok, I live an hour from the place and know the store, and it's goods, inside out after 35 years in the field.:D

MSR is bringing out(back by popular demand) the .5L Platpus water bottle next month, and it rolls up to nothing and fits with all the other gear in a zip belt bag smaller than the water bottle holder above.

555 may SAY a barebones kit would be more affordable, but his inner child is saying "my birthday is soon, my birthday is soon"...

Thanks tarmix101, I appreciate that:thumbup:, since most of my posts are Joking around and Joking with Images.:D

And thank you for Making that Bare Bones Post.:thumbup::)

I agree keeping it simple would be the best bet.A simple kit that'll work in a wide veriety of enviroments.I like tarmix101's idea of the knife, sheath, tops kit and small pouch of extras.Simple and universal. We'll all mod the kit to suit our own needs anyway so lets not bog it down with too many frills.

i'm with you on this one.... i have kit and gear all over the place...

i would like to see a more simple/streamlined kit, that can possibly have stuff added to it.. ... and really theres no way in hell i can afford three hundred some odd dollars for this project.... :eek:but i really would love to be a part of it...:o

I will certainly go along with whatever the majority wants in the kit. With the smaller of the two knives. I have a surplus of large blades.:D I like the idea of a price not far from 250.00

Well, doing some quick number crunching, if it's only the RC-6, sheath, TOPS Stuff, Blanket, and PSP, the price goes waaaaaaaaay down to under $175, less for the RC-4. A Bare bones kit will be feasible. You'd need to find a place to put the blanket and the PSP, but I doubt you'd be hiking without some other sort of carrying device.

Sounds great ! knowing the RC series 4&6 have yet to ship what kinda time frame are we looking at before this thread turns into an order form ?
