BladeForums.com Survival Knife & Kit project

Interested and watchin' this thread, any idea on what the drop dead day will be for commitments Kevin?

Since I own a couple of RC3s, I would for sure want the RC6, but would probably take the full set up with the RC4 as well. Count me in for either or both options :D

RAT says that the knives aren't coming out until March, so once there's a consensus, I'll start taking preorders.
Long thread, lots of ideas. . . I have 1000' of 550 paracord, a few ferro-rods and signal mirrors (glass and lexan) +++ so a barebones RC-6 based kit is what I'd be looking for. How do we determine consensus?

Definitely go with the basic kit. I think like most people, I've got all of the stuff mentioned other than the RC-4/6 and the AMK kit. Plus, a lot may not want some of the specific items. For instance I have no desire for a Nalgene bottle and cup because I have so many GI canteens with the nesting cup and stove.

I'm with tarmix on this one, pack it up and ship it off, with a good wholesale price of course :D....at least maybe a little discount for your loyal paying members ;).

I might be down for one of these. You could offer a $25 discount to paying members and maybe end up with a few more paying members...

Id be up for adding a set-up to my collection for sure. My only question (and a small one at that) is if its a "survival" set-up do you want to go with a dark green/black whistle or would a more brightly colored one serve its purpose better?
(Hate to lose it in the dark

Definitely interested when the final details come out. This will be VERY cool!!

WOW so many opinions on what would be best. I guess Spark is gonna have to come to his own concensous. I am not worried about buying my 3rd or 4th Nalgene bottle. I have a lot of knives and I consider many up to par. I am always looking for something more or better. Sometimes I buy things because I need them. Sometimes I buy them because I want one. My wife asks 'why do you want one when you already have something.'

I want one to have it. Is it more difficult than that.

Spark, Make your "concensous" and let us know. You will never get a fully optioned do-all have-all that satisfies nor make a minimal that pleases the others.

Let me know whats in it. How it helps the forum. Why it's good for me and If I want it I may just buy it to have one.

Maybe I've missed it but wouldn't it make sense to set-up the kit including sheath without a knife as an option. This will bring the price down and we can focus more on the content of the pack. Lets face it, we all have more than enough knives at home (4 or 6 inchers). If the kydex insert can be taken out of the sheath then we can mold it to fit any knife of the intended sizes. While RATs are good knives I have enough other blades that I personally consider more optimal (I didn't write better because this is a personal choice) for my use. And getting a SpecOps sheath + kit has been on my list for a while.

If the knife itself is distinctive, I'll bet you could get the whole kit and sell the blade by itself for a profit to those who don't get in on the initial deal.

Hi guys. Originally the AMK SOL kit was mentioned as being a possible component for the kit. I know we've gravitated away from that kit, but I found this last weekend at REI and thought I'd throw it out there.

This is a Seal Line See pouch, size Large. This is a roll-top dry pouch. It comes with a lanyard and it has a patch-type belt loop. This pouch retailed for $9.95 at REI.

I put the contents of the AMK Pocket Survival Pak plus a few other odds and ends inside the pouch just for illustration purposes. The the Petzl e+lite out of its case and a little more attention to packing, I'm confident that I could fit a few more TinderQuick pieces and a 2-person HeatSheets blanket in the pouch.

Again, I realize this project has moved more toward a sheath-based simplified kit. Just a little food for thought, for what it's worth.

I HATE to be a fly in the ointment as they say, but I had a nasty mishap while testing our own Go-Kit three years ago. This nasty accident caused me to gravitate away from plastic containers. I am now in search of a METAL container instead. Remind me to post pictures of the damage some day. Two Lithium ion AA's spontaneously exploded in a CountyComm SW radio, which then set the Pelican Micro Case on fire, right under my car seat (where it was stashed). I had to abandon the car and call the Fire Dept. to put out the voracious flames. Plastic is excellent fuel (think petroleum) . Obviously, I now do not store batteries inside radios inside my go-kits, still- you get the point.

I am going to speculate here. My belief based upon the little information here is that somehow your radio had a dead short. Thats probably what started your fire. Lithium and NiMH batteries have the ability to dump amazing amounts of current is a small amount of time melting metal and/or turning it red hot. You have to be very careful that they don't short.

I use these and they work very well to protect from most shorting problems. No guarantees though if you are not careful. Again, I can't be sure of this but it wouldn't surprise me.

SPARK! :D Any thoughts on this BF kit yet? I'd like to get one of these blades as a BF kit, but if it's going to be a while I'd like to get in on some of the pre-orders.
