Important Info! Bladeforums Knife for 2017 - 6/26 Update!

I agree that the early reserve system is the most fair system, even though I often don't manage to get on in time. There are plenty of knives available that are in less demand, and I just don't get worked up about it.

However, I do have concerns regarding this year's forum knife. I will be disappointed if those of us who regularly purchase these knives every year have to "lolly-scramble" to get one. Things could go negative and that would be a bummer.

Echoes my sentiments pretty well. No use worrying over something that can't be controlled at times.

I share your concerns on the forum knife, though I am rather new here and only have the 2016 version. I think the draw of the Barlow is rather powerful and it is bringing a lot of folks who may not otherwise frequent the Traditionals forum into the mix of interested and enthusiastic buyers. I expect it will sell very well and rather quickly.

If I am fortunate enough to obtain a reservation, I will gladly offer it up to a regular in the event that he/she misses out. I would much rather see it in the hands of one who has been collecting these knives for the past several years then satiate my need for a Barlow in my collection.

Pad, While I can appreciate the sentiment, I am sure many here would agree. You have earned your keep and your spot on the porch.

While I like a barlow, I am going to skip this. There are plenty of folks that are more into the pattern than I am.
Plus, I am in on the 25 red bone. If it happens that I am not smitten with the pattern, it will either go on the market for cost, or be gifted to my grandfather. I just don't know if the Florida weather will agree with it...

Pretty easy solution. Put up a preorder for all members who have at least x amount of posts. After so long open up a chance for them to order a second for folks that want backups. When it goes live even people that reserve could get a third if needed(kids, gifts, etc.). Doesn't seem like it would be that hard to get these into the hands of the regulars first.

Speaking for myself only, in the future I would be willing to pay an optional higher membership fee to be guaranteed a BF knife.

Just an idea, but members could have the option to pay BF a certain amount ($80?) upon renewal or at a certain time each year to guarantee a knife. More money up front, and supply could come closer to meeting demand. No knife means you get your money back or credit to a paying dealer.

Again, just an idea. I'm sure I'm overlooking something that would make this unlikely or unworthy. I have thoughts for more terms and conditions, but don't want to waste my time typing them if this is met unfavorably. :)

it's an interesting idea - but logistically it doesn't work very well:
  • this would put the handling of the forum knife back on 1SKS -- which means they would need to make a profit on the knife to cover their time if nothing else -- which would raise the cost. moving the knife to a totally volunteer deal over the past few years has lowered the cost of the knife/allowed us to get a nicer knife for the $$, which has allowed more people to participate.
  • processing refunds or shop credit requires a lot of bookkeeping especially if you open it up to multiple vendors
  • if you pony up and don't like the pattern, you would either have to buy anyway, no matter what the additional cost or you would have to forfeit your deposit -- either of these could sour a lot of folks on the process.
  • bookkeeping becomes a nightmare, because <someone> has to track who has paid the extra, and get the funds transferred to those handling the payment process for the annual knife.
  • the "traditional subforum knife" is not the "bladeforum knife" - BF membership dues are paid to 1SKS (the BF forum host) and subforum knife payments go to the person who is handling the purchase (gunstock jack this year), which is not a function of 1SKS -- because the subforum knife does not generate a profit. it's a volunteer thing that requires a chunk of donated time for the volunteers handling everything along with a bit of financial risk, because they have to pay for the entire run - even if not all blades are paid for up front.

I'll be passing this year. The knife fever has well and truly left me, so it requires something that checks off every single box to make me consider a new knife. This one actually UNchecks about every box on my desired features list so it makes it easy to let it go to someone who wants it more.

I'm looking forward to trying to get one of these. I love gec micarta and I'm very interested in how the canvas will work with this knife. This will be my first gec that isn't from the f&f line.
