Blades & Bourbon

Voyage #23
Gotta admit, this stuff is pretty dang tasty, esp. over ice!
The VA and Philly shot glasses seemed appropriate in honor of the man himself for which the bottle is named...

Another interesting bottle I came across this week...

RwPDKO.jpg

Nassif Family Reserve in 107 proof bottled by Cat's Eye Distillery. Most of you may seen the other one of his bottling - the 140 proof Light Whiskey, it made some splash in the Bourbon community with the higher proof
but it is readily available almost everywhere and I intentionally didn't buy it, also such a higher proof isn't really my cup o tea.
The 107 proof is 50/50 14 years old MGP juice, mixed with something called Bourye. You might see it in High West bottles, it's a 50/50 blend of 2, 3 years old bourbons:
One 95% corn and 5% Rye, and another - 60% corn, 36% Rye, high Rye bourbon.
It's not memorable but it's very pleasant to sip and have some above the average complexity in it IMO. I like it, for around $40 in FL, this is a really nice juice to try without breaking the bank.
Cheers BF fellas !

Another fancy-one... Few friends got together to purchase this-one, otherwise I wouldn't shell out almost $200 for a Tennessee Whiskey... 😂

So, how did it taste?

Read a few articles that claim that bourbon (unlike scotch) aged more than 12 years takes on too much of the flavor of the wood, which is apparently why you don't see too many bourbons aged longer than that.

Don't know yet, I'm waiting for one of our drinking buddies to get back from Ohio and when we get together after the 4th will open it.
It could be true, I don't know. The Knob Creek that is 12 and 15 years old doesn't taste oaky if you ask me, it tastes as smooth bourbon that hides the higher proof.
This is Tennessee whiskey, even it's labeled as Bourbon, they use different charcoal for mellowing and you can always tell which juice is coming from Tennessee or is mellowed in Kentucky.
Tennessee is using maple charcoal, whether the Kentucky companies usually are using just activated charcoal.
I personally do not like either juice but it wouldn't be determining factor to try something, I just prefer non-charcoal filtered juice.
I did try the other impressions of Blue Note and it definitely isn't my type of juice, I like it,
it's a good quality alcohol but I prefer more classic Kentucky tasting high corn spirits or good quality Indiana MGP stuff as the one High West is using.
I'm really curious how this compares to other Bourbons from Kentucky, will see... Our friend will hunt for more of the Blue Note flavors in Ohio, they sell MSRP there and should be really good Bourbon hunt,
hopefully we will have more of this to compare when he comes back.

A (very) few of my bottles and a couple recent knife acquisitions - ZT 0452 and 0562. My everyday drinkers tend to be Old Forrester 1910, Woodford Double Oak or Old Grandad Bottled in Bond.

The Belle Meade Sherry Cask stuff is quite good IMHO, even though it is $80 and a contract MGP product for Belle Meade. The high proof Belle Meade Reserve (also MGP) is also quite good.

The Maker's wood stave store picks tend to be quite variable - the last one I got here in FL at ABCFWS was outstanding, but a recent one I picked up in VA (state run ABC stores) was just OK.

It is highly dependent on the temperature swings and where in the rikhouse it is aged. I agree that the Knob Creek 12 and 15 are excellent, and of course the Pappy stuff is great (if not worth the street price).

Been looking for Knob Creek 12 for awhile but no luck yet.

Found pretty much everything else that I've wanted to buy: Weller 12 & Reserve, Blanton's Single Barrel, Bookers Boston Batch 2/2020 and Little Book Chapt 4, Michter's 10, Col. E.H. Taylor Small Batch and Stagg Jr. that I'm holding in reserve.

But I've got around 20 other bottles of bourbon available to pour.

Not even thinking about trying to find a bottle of Pappy 4sale. I can afford it but wouldn't pay more than my current limit of $250 per bottle regardless of what it is, which obviously leaves a bottle of Pappy out.

That said, I'm currently on the "wagon" per my doc's orders to help assess a urological problem. Can't drink any booze or coffee (or anything else w/caffine in it) for a month to see if it makes any difference. :(

Been on the wagon for a just few days but haven't touched a drop, so I guess I'm NOT a full blown alcoholic yet but I'm still on the lookout for hard-to-find bottles of bourbon to buy and I'm planning to make up for lost time when I'm allowed to drink coffee and booze again.

LOL! ;)

I was really underwhelmed by the Michter’s 10, YMMV. I have 3 or 4 bottles of KC 12 and 1 KC 15. Last year it was all over in SW VA where I summer. This year, none to be had. I also refuse to pay the scalper prices for Pappy or Rip. I get really tired of chasing unicorn bourbons since I drink it, not collect it.

Want to sell a bottle of KC12? If so, send me a PM.

I was in collection mode for awhile but have pretty much bought everything that was on my list already. Am holding back the bottles specifically mentioned because they cost so much and are so hard to find but I will open and drink them eventually.

In the meantime, I have SO much bourbon & scotch available to drink, I seriously doubt if I'll finish drinking even 1/2 of them b4 I kick the bucket.

How much is KC12 going for in your area?

A couple of sellers on Drizzly are offering it for just under $72/bottle but they both require a $399 min purchase on any order.

Its $75 at the stores I can get it from. It is very good, it's got a unique flavor IMO. Brad

My local Norman's prices. Sgt, let me know if you are interested of something, I can use business UPS account of a friend of mine to ship it.

Honestly, I personally prefer the KC Single Barrel Select over the 12 yo but it just could be me...

I'm all in for a bottle of KC12 - I prefer aged statements. PM coming.

Just broke down and bought a bottle of Weller Antique 107 that's been sitting on the shelf at my LLS for $150 for awhile. It joins a bottle of Special Reserve and 12 along w/the custom Cardman bushcraft knife (including a sheath, sharpening stone & ferro rod) that I just bought off of the Exchange in the pic.

Hm4iPKY.jpg

Bought the 107 because I recently read an article that claimed that 107 was the "best" of the Wellers (I know, YMMV) and because they are selling it on Drizzly for about 2x's what my LLS wanted for it and it was w/in my current $250 price limit for a bottle of bourbon or scotch.

Still debating whether to raise my price limit to buy the $300 bottle of Weller Full Proof also still still sitting on the shelf there but w/so many other bourbons to buy, I'm in no rush to do so.

BTW, my LLS also has some Old Rip Van Winkle 12 and Pappy Van Winkle 23 for sale. Asked to look at the bottles and actually touched them but NO WAY I'm going to buy them for $1.3 & 5.5k, respectively. LOL! ;)

They released a Weller Single Barrel last year as well for the first time. MSRP is $60 I believe, but most places are selling it for $800 to $1000. It's tempting to sell it
