I hiked 6 miles in this exotic place called "Iowa" today.

Sebenza along for the ride.

Yes, that's the Loess Hills, not far from Preparation Canyon. The Loess Hills do have some nice trails and scenery.

The wind was awful today, ambient was 12°F with ~20mph winds, made for a pretty rough time when out of the tree cover:

He still had fun, was able to sniff out ~5-6 pine cones

By the looks of the trail is it heavely traveled?? Seems packed down or does someome groom them!!
Our stuff here is mostly knee deep with alot of trudging effort!!

Yeah, they're fairly popular trails, but we rarely see anyone in the hour or so we're out in the mornings - the snow is ~3 weeks old now, but it was a pain to get through when it first fell. If its too deep and new, we'll skip, since my pup isn't very tall.

Super warm up while on the trail today - went from 12°F at the start and finished at 26°F, the snow was starting to become slush towards the end, just in time for our next storm later today:

At this point we had only found four pine cones, so he was a little less excited:

We were in the mid 20's this morning, showed 25°F with 10 mph winds after we got another 4" of snow yesterday morning:

He found a few pine cones - "Here's one!"

Back down to 10°F this morning, decided to head to a trail we rarely use, seems very few have been there to hike, lots more XC ski tracks than foot prints -

Only found three pine cones today..

21°F with lots of wind, at some point Maine has to warm up...

We hiked out to a shared hike/snowmobile trail, and many pine cones were dug up from the snow machines, made for a happy boy

Along with the post hike soaked gear. Snapped a photo of my franken carry rig: Buy Brown backer plate on a lionsheathsworks SXB sheath with RMJ straps. Got to make it work somehow and I'm picky, got to have my split loop carry haha.

Zeek had to get groomed yesterday, about three weeks overdue, and he was too matted, so she had to give him a buzz cut:

Found a little patch of grass, hopefully this means we will get to spring sooner than later, but was still only 21°F...

Back into the high-teens today, 18°F - with a bit of melt off yesterday, everything was covered in ice again today

But, he managed to find loads of pine cones, so he was happy:

Yeah, its the shortest he's been cut since we lived in Montana, he usually rejects blankets around the house, but is now finding them to be needed for comfort... but when we're hiking, this is what he likes, and he's actually quite warm to the touch under the coat, so he seems happy enough with the coat and musher's secret on the pads. We do have boots, but he spends more time trying to take them off than actually enjoying the comfort of them (we have winter boots and summer hiking shoes, he likes neither).

Was a nice crisp 16°F this morning...

I guess I felt a little guilty and curious to see if he might like his heavier jacket today, and he really doesn't like that jacket, most of the time his tail was tucked and just didn't enjoy life, but he put a brave face on for the camera:
