Blades upon Books - Traditionals

Despite three gruelling years solo sailing, Capt.Slocum never mentions even using a knife still less what type was on board. He talks of a very modest set of carpenter's tools and his whole ethos seems to be like the French chef Escoffier "faites simple" keep it simple. So a simple CASE Penknife type likely sufficed, or none at all ;)

The Bernard Moitessier's boat was named "Joshua". I saw it up close twice, in 1969 and in 1992. It couldn't be more simple. Made in 1962 it still sails.

He'll never make it without a rigging knife!

Very impressive Dan. A beautiful and simple sailing vessel.

Some years ago I was lucky to be on a ship on the North Sea when a line of Tall Ships were passing nearby from several countries an unforgettable sight those large sailing ships like ghosts of the past.

If I ever get to Oslo I'd relish visiting Amundsen's ship Fram. Bet he had a pocket-knife, Scott too.

Thanks, Will

Traditional boats !
I'm native of a country, Brittany, which has a strong maritime tradition. When i was young wooden working boats were still common and i've had some opportunities to sail along the coasts, the most dangerous and exciting sailing.
Things have changed like everywhere and the old country doesn't exist anymore but in the Douarnenez harbour museum are kept very interesting working boats. Some of those boats from USA, Great Britain and Scandinavia. It's worth the travel.
Here's a boat of the museum, a breton "chaloupe". galerie-an-eostig2.jpg

Based on the date of the photo, I think I read this book in December. The plot involves several antiwar activists (thinly-disguised fictionalized versions of actual Vietnam War protestors, e.g., Jane Fonda) from the Vietnam era being assassinated 40 years later, apparently by a former US military sniper famous for his success in Vietnam. The FBI seems to have an open-and-shut case, but decides to consult with Bob Swagger, himself a Vietnam War Marine sniper of some note, about the case. Swagger soon isn't buying the "facts" of the case and goes off on his own to find out what's going on and bring about his version of justice. I had read the book before, but on first reading hadn't noticed the author's radical right extremism, e.g. everyone at the New York Times MUST be an idiot, while everyone at FOX News is a better representative of Truth, Justice, and the American Way than is Superman himself!! Polarization Is Paramount!! o_O
