Sitting alone in the kitchen nights I got bores so I thought I'd try the colour stain bottles in the leather kit.

I only had tissues to spread the stuff. A bit messy. Next time I'll use a cloth.

Playing around with etching. Got some stickers made up but I think they are too complicated and big. I'm going to design my own logo.

Still going with this Scottish Dirk. Artistic etching with some 20 year old model paint as the masking agent, to be electrically etched with salt water and 12 volts from an old car charger.

I love watching the evolution of your work!

Thanks mate. The thing I've always loved about blogging stuff like this, is that anyone can see that anyone can do it. Try. Try again. If you fail, it's as much a lesson as succeeding.

I learn far more from my failures than from my successes and EVERY skill I have built is constantly under review and improvement. If it was perfect first time, where's the fun in that?

Good to see others doing it too because I've learned invaluable stuff from amateurs as much as I have from experienced old-timers.

I'm just looking if ageing the blade without losing the etch is going too far. I want this to look old and rough, like it was excavated.

Hmm. I would etch a few test pieces, and then attempt your aging process on those.

Have you ever tried the blue and bleach aging process? I know that Rick Marchand uses that process on his blades and it can look awesome.

No, but I'd be interested to see it. Does he have a link/photos/blog/tutorial/youtube?

I aged the steel by boiling some balsamic vinegar, (It's all I had) heating the blade under boiling water then splotched on the hot vinegar in random dabs. I left it for half an hour to see what happened. I did it in in several itterations to get the desired effect and it came out pretty nice. Some lovely blotches and streaks in a random pattern that didn't overpower the illustrated etching.

Got three on the bench going at the moment. Here's one just about to get the handle all sanded and oiled.

Over half way through all the love jobs now.

Very nice, I am glad you are planning on selling in the future. From the get-go, you have been making beautiful pieces and using our advice to improve your blades and it really shows. I'm sure many people will be willing to pay a pretty penny for your work. Good job!
Glad I subscribed to this thread!

Selling in the future? No, not my plan. I'm making these for fun and to pick up a skill. It's also a great way to give gifts to friends, family and those who have gone out of their way for me.

Perhaps if some loan shark is about to kneecap me I could sell enough to keep me out of a wheelchair, but other than that it's not my intent.

Thanks heaps for your kind words mate. It's encouraging to hear from other craftsmen that I am on track and progressing.

Bless ya!

Baz.

No problem!
I just got the impression you were when you said "Over half way through all the love jobs now" :)

I have quite a few favours I felt that I had to reward so I drew up a list on the shed wall of people I thought worthy. That list grew a bit the more I thought about it.

One day I'll make one for me... :D

Seeing as I have to make leather sheaths for my little knives, I thought I had better err on the safety side and make a box for the Dirk. It's sharp now so it's an accident waiting to happen.

Yesterday I chainsawed out a bit of wood from a fallen branch that's been down for nearly two years.

Hard to believe it's the same bit of wood. Still a lot of sanding and oiling to go but I reckon it will look alright.
