Hello forum friends,
My reply to this thread is later than I hoped. After the Blade Show, my wife and I embarked on an eight day three state road trip to see places we had never visited before. I shipped my knives home just before we caught our return flight and they just got back Monday.
We had a great time at the show. It was great to meet and talk to Andy, Ken, Dylan, Allen, Adam, Judy, Audrey, Chris, David & Phillip. It was also a blast to meet other regular forum members; Kal El, Bill510c, PhilipL, Mistwalker, bonafide, ErichM, a2vg1095, Southern Gent, Taja (& Igor) and others.
I purchased thirteen knives over the weekend, including seven Fiddlebacks. Here they are:
Five of the Fiddlebacks were purchased for friends who could not be at the show. Four of those knives are shown in Phillips (M4Super90) reply further up in this thread. The other knife was a beautiful tapered tang Bushcrafter with Snakewood that now resides with a good friend in Florida.
Here are the other eight knives that I purchased. My wife has subsequently claimed two of them as hers.
The two Fiddlebacks that I got are a Bushcrafter Jr. in 5/32 SFT A-2 with black bolsters over Shadetree Tangerine burlap and a Bear Cub in tapered 5/32 O-1 with Snake Wood over natural with a blue pinstripe.
I hesitate to call either of the following two apprentice knives.
I have been following Allen Surls work since he joined the crew, but I never bought one of his knives. Andy officially graduated Allen several months ago and that is for good reason. His quality of work shows that he deserves it. After handling most of his knives at the show, one kept holding my interest. It was a 5/32 tapered O-1 double bolstered Badger with a burl wood center section over black & white pinstripes. Even though I am not normally a wood guy, this knife just had it all going on with nice balance and great spalting.
The other knife is an Osprey Knife & Tool "Raptor" in 3/32 SFT CPM 154 with black canvas over black and a red pinstripe. I picked up most of Chriss display knives multiple times through the weekend, but this knife stood out to me. The handle is very comfortable and I am a sucker for 3/32 CPM 154. I have an ocean fishing trip trip scheduled in August and this knife seems like the perfect choice. Black canvas does not thrill me aesthetically, but damn this knife feels good and it is tied for the sharpest knife I bought over the weekend. Chris does very nice work!
Tang shots! The red pinstripe adds a custom look to the Osprey Raptor. The tapered tang on the W.A. Surls Badger looks very classy and adds to the great balance.
I couldnt resist Carl Reichsteiners kitchen knife forged from an old saw blade. It is less than 3/32 thick and it cuts like a light saber. Light weight, thin, and easy handling made this an easy decision. This is one of the knives that my wife claimed as hers.
Jarrett Fleming is another Georgia knife maker with some great skills. I visited his table many times throughout the weekend before deciding on a Kestrel with black bolsters over green dyed maple burl in tapered 5/32 CPM 154. This is a beautiful knife that is the other knife that my wife claimed as hers.
Everyone loves Jarretts makers mark with the leafless Oak tree. It is a shame that he has do away with it because Boker says that it infringes on their registered trademark for a tree or bush on the blade. It is sad, but Ill take his quality over their trademark any day.
Last but not least are two T.M. Hunt knives that I special ordered a while ago. Earlier this year when Shadetree announced the new Tangerine and Electric Plum colored burlaps, I ordered some sets and started looking for a custom maker to make me some knives with the new colors. Most makers had closed their order books to get ready for the blade show. Todd Hunt was the only one that I contacted who was willing to accept the challenge and make me two knives. When Todd realized that I was going to the show, he told me that he would have my orders ready by then.
The Yuma has black linen bolsters over Tangerine burlap in 3/16 O-1 and the Magua with Electric Plum burlap is 1/8 O-1. Both blades feature a dark acid washed finish that I requested.
The Electric Plum burlap is really nice stuff. I hope that we see it as a regular item on some Fiddlebacks soon.
Here are my two bolstered Tangerine knives together.
I post some more photos of these three in the Lets see your Shadetree thread a little later.
That is it on the knives. After we left Atlanta and headed north, we made a stop at Track Rock to see where all that hammering fun happens twice a year. Frank was nice enough to show us around and he said to say hi to Carl, Rick, Andy and all the regulars.
We had a great time in Georgia! Thanks everyone.
