Bladeshow 2015 Purchases

Yes Bill - cut from the same cloth! I was wondering what all you carried off with you.

That is an amazing haul you made there Bill. Each one is a stellar example of the respective makers art. I looked at that CRex Green River knife several times. it is not what I would call my normal style of knife, but my mind kept coming back to it. When I decided to head back to Carl's table to buy it, it was gone. I am glad that it ended up with you my friend. I truly enjoyed all of our conversations throughout the weekend.

Best regards,

Phil

Thank you Phil. I had it in my mind going to Blade that I was going to get a knife from Carl. I went back to his table multiple times to try and decide (but mostly to chat with Carl and Rick) and each time I picked this one up. I finally gave in the the allure.
I appreciate the time you and your lovely wife took to chat with me, it was a great time for sure. I look forward to the opportunity to do it again my friend!

Hello forum friends,

My reply to this thread is later than I hoped. After the Blade Show, my wife and I embarked on an eight day three state road trip to see places we had never visited before. I shipped my knives home just before we caught our return flight and they just got back Monday.

We had a great time at the show. It was great to meet and talk to Andy, Ken, Dylan, Allen, Adam, Judy, Audrey, Chris, David & Phillip. It was also a blast to meet other regular forum members; Kal El, Bill510c, PhilipL, Mistwalker, bonafide, ErichM, a2vg1095, Southern Gent, Taja (& Igor) and others.

I purchased thirteen knives over the weekend, including seven Fiddlebacks. Here they are:

Five of the Fiddlebacks were purchased for friends who could not be at the show. Four of those knives are shown in Phillip’s (M4Super90) reply further up in this thread. The other knife was a beautiful tapered tang Bushcrafter with Snakewood that now resides with a good friend in Florida.

Here are the other eight knives that “I” purchased. My wife has subsequently claimed two of them as hers.

The two Fiddlebacks that I got are a Bushcrafter Jr. in 5/32” SFT A-2 with black bolsters over Shadetree Tangerine burlap and a Bear Cub in tapered 5/32” O-1 with Snake Wood over natural with a blue pinstripe.

I hesitate to call either of the following two “apprentice” knives.

I have been following Allen Surls’ work since he joined the crew, but I never bought one of his knives. Andy officially graduated Allen several months ago and that is for good reason. His quality of work shows that he deserves it. After handling most of his knives at the show, one kept holding my interest. It was a 5/32” tapered O-1 double bolstered Badger with a burl wood center section over black & white pinstripes. Even though I am not normally a “wood” guy, this knife just had it all going on with nice balance and great spalting.

The other knife is an Osprey Knife & Tool "Raptor" in 3/32” SFT CPM 154 with black canvas over black and a red pinstripe. I picked up most of Chris’s display knives multiple times through the weekend, but this knife stood out to me. The handle is very comfortable and I am a sucker for 3/32” CPM 154. I have an ocean fishing trip trip scheduled in August and this knife seems like the perfect choice. Black canvas does not thrill me aesthetically, but damn this knife feels good and it is tied for the sharpest knife I bought over the weekend. Chris does very nice work!

Tang shots! The red pinstripe adds a custom look to the Osprey Raptor. The tapered tang on the W.A. Surls Badger looks very classy and adds to the great balance.

I couldn’t resist Carl Reichsteiner’s kitchen knife forged from an old saw blade. It is less than 3/32” thick and it cuts like a light saber. Light weight, thin, and easy handling made this an easy decision. This is one of the knives that my wife claimed as hers.

Jarrett Fleming is another Georgia knife maker with some great skills. I visited his table many times throughout the weekend before deciding on a Kestrel with black bolsters over green dyed maple burl in tapered 5/32” CPM 154. This is a beautiful knife that is the other knife that my wife claimed as hers.

Everyone loves Jarrett’s maker’s mark with the leafless Oak tree. It is a shame that he has do away with it because Boker says that it infringes on their registered trademark for a “tree or bush” on the blade. It is sad, but I’ll take his quality over their trademark any day.

Last but not least are two T.M. Hunt knives that I special ordered a while ago. Earlier this year when Shadetree announced the new Tangerine and Electric Plum colored burlaps, I ordered some sets and started looking for a custom maker to make me some knives with the new colors. Most makers had closed their order books to get ready for the blade show. Todd Hunt was the only one that I contacted who was willing to accept the challenge and make me two knives. When Todd realized that I was going to the show, he told me that he would have my orders ready by then.

The Yuma has black linen bolsters over Tangerine burlap in 3/16” O-1 and the Magua with Electric Plum burlap is 1/8” O-1. Both blades feature a dark acid washed finish that I requested.

The Electric Plum burlap is really nice stuff. I hope that we see it as a regular item on some Fiddlebacks soon.

Here are my two bolstered Tangerine knives together.

I post some more photos of these three in the “Let’s see your Shadetree” thread a little later.

That is it on the knives. After we left Atlanta and headed north, we made a stop at Track Rock to see where all that hammering fun happens twice a year. Frank was nice enough to show us around and he said to say hi to Carl, Rick, Andy and all the regulars.

We had a great time in Georgia! Thanks everyone.

Phil

Great stuff Phil I really enjoyed looking at all your pics. And while I am not a "burlap guy" especially the brightly colored ones, I really do like the ones you selected. You have me starting to think that I may need some...

Great looking knives Phil  and thanks for your assistance in snagging the Snakewood Bushcrafter.

You got me thinking about where to send my set of Electric Plum scales after you sent yours onto Todd. I finally decided to send mine to Jarrett with a request for a bolstered 3/32" CPM-154 Kestrel. Per your comments above I have to believe that when finished, it will slice like a laser.

Melissa has a good eye for a quality set of knives. The only question I have is.......what's for dinner ?

Very cool story (as always) Phil. Be sure to make plans for Blade 2016!!

Great posts guys! Thanks for sharing your awesome Blade scores. I've got a new knife maker to follow in Carl Reichsteiner and am really digging the electric plum. Todd Hunt's dark acid wash finish really makes them pop. Congrats!

Hey Phil.
It was a real pleasure to meet you and your wife at Blade. Funny how we were right next to each other in line for quite some time on Friday and didn't even realize the Fiddleback connection until Vance came around and handed out a flyer. I'm really glad we got to meet. I wish my wife had interest in staying at the show this year as opposed to shopping around Atlanta. I think she would have enjoyed your wife's company. She is very pleasant.

As far as the knives go, WOW! Carl's kitchen knife is superb! Looks like a winner. The Magua in Plum is Awesome as well! All great finds.

As you know I was mainly in search of some custom kitchen knives. Many to choose from and a couple almost sealed the deal, but in the end my wallet just didn't fully cooperate. One in particular had my eye. At $1750, I would have outspent my wife for the entire weekend with one knife! Although it was incredible, I wound up saving the funds and going in a different direction. An 8" Ken Onion Chef knife and one of his paring knives from Chef Works had my wallet breathing a lot easier. The profile on the Chef knife works great for me. I have several of his classic folder designs. Ergo's are great in my opinion.
Well take care Phil. Again glad to meet you and and several other forum members.

Brian, if you are reading this, I'm sorry and disappointed I didn't get a chance to introduce myself and shake your hand. I saw you for a moment in the Pit Friday night while I was speaking with someone and then at the next moment you were gone. I didn't stay late that night and I left early Saturday. Surely, one of these days we'll get a chance to meet up.

Take care everyone. Some really great purchases.

Does Crex sell any knives outside of Blade Show?

Yeah .. Guild Meetings & TrackRock hammer in's. He's registered on the forum but he tends to stay on the DL.

I'm glad you got that tangerine buschcraft jr Phil
And the handing out the flyers thing..... Was the most uncomfortable thing I've done in my 38yrs.
I'm guilty of blowing off someone that approaches me trying to do the very same thing and it was like karma kicking my ass

Edit to add
Phil I'm not saying you are Kal did that in anyway
It was the look I got from everyone else

Could have been A LOT worse. Andy could have had you wearing a costume while disseminating paraphernalia. Like Angus from AC/DC kind of stuff. IJS. :)

I could have walked around the show with everyone
