Bm710-1401

This is most exciting! I don't mind paying higher prices when the knives use premium materials, and like the KW Contego, I think this knife does just that. Between the state-of-the-art steel and advanced G10 machining, this is a premium knife with a great value and offers a huge advantage over the standard 710D2!

Compared to what other makers are offering, this is a lot of knife for the money IMO.

How hard is M390 vs. D2 vs. 154cm?

While the Rockwell Hardness is somewhat misleading in regards to edge retention (like with S90V), M390 puts D2 and 154CM to shame big time (S30V also) because the steel has almost ridiculously high wear resistance. Especially when cutting things like cardboard that tend to be harsh on edges, it's almost a laughable comparison. The thing I have come to like most about M390 is that unlike most other steels, it refuses to lose that scary sharp fresh edge even with frequent usage. Where as with S30V you cut a few harder objects and you are left with a sharp but NOT scary sharp edge, that same cut with M390 has no real impact on sharpness, and you can repeat that cut many times over and the edge stays shaving sharp. It can also hold thin angles which I do not find to be very practical on D2, and not very practical at all with 154CM.

It's corrosion resistance is stellar. It's not terribly difficult to sharpen but it does take a while because of the high wear resistance. One thing worth noting is that M390 really, really likes finer finishes with a polish. I find I get the best performance when I finish either with a EP polishing tape, a Chosera 5k+, or a strop with a fine paste. It takes a little while to get it to that perfect sharpness, but once it reaches that point it holds it for a very long time.

I just want to add that I wouldn't be aware of this knife if not for this sub-forum. Thanks again for being here on Bladeforums for our convenience. I'm now in line for this one, too.

I really hope KW does a limited run with the Adamas folder next...perhaps in that case use a combination of the existing tan G10 but with layered black G10 to create a nice tan-black contrast with an upgraded steel...

perhaps if they really want to get a little crazy then they use something like Vanadis 4 Extra as a folder like the Adamas with that kind of steel would be insane, and Strider would have some competition for their CPM-3V folders!

Maybe they should a different color for each edition.
I like the blue but a new color would be cool.

Exactly what I was just gonna say. We've already had the blue 805, 806, 810. Why couldn't they have done black and green, Black and Tan, or some other colors

The 710 is my favorite Large BM and blue is my favorite color. Im glad KW stayed with the theme. I would have been like WTF if it was black/doodoo. Black/green sounds good too, maybe theyll do more themes down the road... But for what it's worth, BLUE is the color they use on their logo and advertising so... Get used to it hehe.

I'm getting excited about this knife. The only question now is: Will it kick my M4 710 out of my pocket? Unlike most people, I really like knives that show wear and the M4 version has a black BK coating with enough wear to give a "tough beater" look that I really like. Maybe the M390 for the office and the M4 for the woods.

ETA: I don't like the rounded spine. I've used the square spine on my M4 version many many times to open beer bottles.

Not sure if this would interest you, but M390 looks really good with a heavily stonewashed or brushed finish, including the hybrid stonewashed finishes, IMO. I have a few M390 blades I've polished-->stonewashed-->polished lightly and it's resulted in a blade that has really good looking contrast and sort of has that 'used' style you mentioned. As M390 polishes really easy and super well, I think the polished-stonewashed look on it gives a really nice contrast from a cosmetic perspective, and it is a really durable finish from a performance perspective.

I've held off the Adamas for a long time, but this would be enough to push me over the edge. 3V in this package would be amazing.

Probably going to pass on this as I have several M390 710's not quite special enough for me but I am disappointed to hear the the M390 Rift did not get approved.

Not for this year. It could still happen in the future, but it usually takes a year or more for these exclusives to see production. The 710-1401 coming about so fast is a rarity. Who knows, maybe one of the other online retailers will end up coming out with their own exclusive Rift. Maybe none of them will. I think it would be really cool to have a 940, 950 and 810 all in blue/black G10 and M390. Talk about keeping it in the family!

Just pre-ordered. This will be my first M390. It will be interesting to see if this 710-1401 can displace my 940-1 as my new pocket ride. The 940-1 always outs all my other beauties so I'll have to wait until late August or early September to find out.
I was waiting to see if I could snag a sprint run Manix 2 Cruwear, but after seeing this post and looking hard and long at the proto pics, I may just pass on the Manix. Maybe not :)

Isn't that other way around? M390 is stainless, so you would prefer it in the field. If you MUST, you can use M4 (instead of D2)...

940-1's S90V has phenomenal wear resistance. Well, if you may notice if you push to the limit. Gotta love that vanadium.

Cruwear is Turbo D2. Again it has more vanadium to make finer and harder vanadium carbide.

That would make my day. Perhaps BKC was basing this priority on their Facebook contest of top knife? But I haven't seen 42 though ;)

710 was one of the top ranking "favorites" to many. 940 and 810 was already released at the time (940-1 & 810-1401) Also REI 551-1401 was also released, not from KW though.

So, I would like to think there should be one more model coming this year. But just like 810-1401, may be 950-1501 be announced during fall holiday seasons?

One can only hope.

True, but the satin M390 looks nice and less intimidating than the BK coated M4. Also, I've used my M4 710 to pry and baton.

Hmmm. At my office, we have black plastic cafeteria knives so BK blade is less intimidating. But YMMV.

Wow, baton and pry M4 710? Are you serious? Keep it safe, and get fixed blade in the woods :). 810 also has regular CPM-M4. I would keep limited production of 710, if I were in your shoe.
