BodyChallenge "Participants page"

From the last post I made, here is a new one, taken roughly end of February.
I'm currently weighing in at about 185lbs, and my goal is 210lbs. I should be able to gain another 7-10lbs in about a month or two!

I am almost over the flu. Started doing a light workout today without weights and it still wore me out. I didn't think being sick would render me this useless.

Eating during the week was on par but this weekend was subpar. Something about visiting the grandparent's makes you want to eat biscuits and gravy, porkchops, eggs, and bacon...

One day of that though, so I am not to over upset at myself. Having a hearty appetite just means I am recovering...=)

I haven't been on much in the last week or so, so I will re-cap my events,

last week, week 5, insanely busy, I spent almost the whole week preparing a briefing (powerpoint slide show, and a script) for an inspector who comes and checks out our unit once every 3 years. Then Friday I "competed" in a cross dressing competition as a prank on my twin sister, ended up winning "Best Dress". I tried to stay on my routine but some nights I was just too spent.

This week is already off to a good start.
Today I helped to load some tin roofing, siding, and a telephone pole onto a trailer.
Mon, I'm going to try and get some running in after tennis.
tues, I'm going to help my BIL build a building
wed, hopefully running after tennis
thurs, tennis match
Fri, day off
and Sat, I'm sure I'll find something to get into.

I'll be trying to continue with my push-ups, crunches, or curling at night with days off on Wed & Sat,

I've been down to about 188-190 this past week. So, I'm getting there. Today I've come down with something, so we'll see how this next week goes. I've been slipping recently with the eating. My girlfriend decided to give me Cold Stone today to make me feel better.

But, I'm still dropping, and I'm happy with that. I'm eating better overall, and still trying to get to a better eating place slowly.

To be mentally and physically able is the desire behind this, it is the primary driving force to my passion in regards to bodybuilding, (“bodybuilding” – meant literally, not pertaining specifically to standing on stage in a French cut Speedo.)
The building of ones body to perform; to perform at its highest possible standard is and should be a fundamental goal inherent in every individuals living. But as it is, to an extent it is being conditioned out of us as a people; it isn’t necessary to strive at being the best.
Through my participation in aiding Shottys process, we struck upon some common truths and desires, one of which being a want to help others on this forum facilitate their dreams; or rather do much as ESEE does – give incentives to those willing to perform the tasks needed in the learning of the skill sets oriented around survival.
Without a well maintained / prepared, body and mind; regardless of the newest maxpidition packs and seventy four knives, and assorted tools in your edc’d psk and bob your success is hindered.
So heres the deal, 1) you need to post "I'M DOIN IT!" and a desire which you feel your body limits, ex. – further better hikes, outdoors time with kids and fam, first accents at Yosemite, running a marathon whatever, 2) post or pm a before picture, weight, feelings thoughts to reflect on after completion,
3) post a goal weight
4) after pictures, weight and thoughts
During this, every week you need to post an update for everyone on how the diet, exercise, training is going, challenges…. Whatever; just keep us updated.
Keep the updates in the challenge thread.
Lots of good things up for grabs, I’ll let Shotty list them off for you guys.
Shotty and I will judge this, in the case of a tie we will bring in someone to determine the winner.
THIS IS NOT JUGDED PURELY ON WEIGHT LOSS, so don’t go out and try to dump a ton of weight and expect to win. Rapid weight loss, drugs, and any other short cuts aren’t going to get you anything aside from ill health.
This may change a bit, we just wanted to get this out there for you guys.

During this contest feel free to ask questions; be eager to learn and make progress. Shotty and myself will help to the best of our ability, anyone entered, to make their goal happen.

This is the contest page
members keep your updates photos and so forth to be judged in this thread
no chit chat just those in the comp.
feel free though as a forum fam. encorage and aid them, but please send it in private messages

Couldn't agree more. In the old RAT website forum I posted these exact thoughts. If you want to practice your survival skills...first off get off your fat ass right?. Also, you might want to quit smoking. I don't care who you are, where you have been, or what gear you have if you weigh 100 pounds more than you should.

I consider myself to have been lazy the past 3 months and have still made it to the gym 4 times a week. Recently, I am trying to get back into my usual routine of 6 times a week. When I go to the gym I try hard. Why go if you aren't going to bust ass? There are guys bigger than me, there are some stronger than me, but I will not allow myself to not try as hard as anyone there.

So often you see people shaving ounces off backpacking gear. 9 out of 10 people would be better off having some extra gear and looseing the weight of the ol' belly.

Okay, I better quit, this is getting very rant like.

Friday night, another update! I just got out of a brutal Muay Thai class. I'm in the transition from intermediate to advanced student right now, so they keep tossing me with different people to see how I do. Simo (lead instructors wife, also title for a female of black belt status in Kajukenbo) thinks that I'm fairly advanced, while Sifu (lead instructor, title for 5th degree in Kajukenbo) sees me as just on the cusp of advanced.

With Sifu in Washington D.C. training directly WITH ROYCE GRACIE (lucky guy) and helping train at the FBI academy, Simo was running class tonight. Lots of movement drills with head work and legs. So, my legs are burning. Then we set into endurance (almost pressed space after "endura") drills. Three minutes, split into six, thirty second segments of straight jab crosses, going fast as you can with good form, to knees in the clinch, to punches, to knees.... Ouch. Follow that up with a round of pyramid kicks. On the right side, one kick, reset. Two kicks, reset. Three kicks, reset. Four... etc until you hit ten kicks. Both sides. Oh! Then we finished with a three minute round of leg lifts where your partner stood at your head and pushed your legs back to the ground.

I'll be sore tomorrow!

Weight tonight after training was 190.02 pounds. Not the best, but within reason. I didn't get to train my normal schedule this week due to being sick, then snow. I was in Muay Thai last nigh and tonight. I'm headed to open gym tomorrow after a job interview (WISH ME LUCK!).

On Monday, I'm adding in more to my training schedule. I feel like I've advanced enough physically to add it in. I'll be starting up... Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. It'll be one hell of a workout, and it will help aid in my Kajukenbo training. I am also trying to ramp up the amount of times I lift weights in the gym to help build muscle mass, not just lose fat content.

Eating wise... this week was... oops. I had Cold Stone last Sunday after a family dinner. My dad took us out. Then, Monday, I felt like ass, so the girlfriend surprised me with Cold Stone. She knew better than to put Mint Mint Chocolate Chocolate Chip ice cream under my nose. Aside from the few slip ups, it's been pretty good. I've been eating a lower fat, better carb, high protein diet. The carbs act as protein transporters. I ate the soup that MistWalker posted about. It was DAMN tasty, and not that bad for me in the amounts I ate it. The protein pancakes I posted about earlier have become a staple for me. Only problem, I've run out of protein and can't afford any more. So, they're made the same, just no powder. Still taste great, and are a good texture.

Thanks for reading the nice long update! For that, I give you pictures of me training!

First, the kick check that lead to me punching her in the forehead...(punch as you land with your leg, you get lots of power.)

Which... made her mad, so she punched me in the nose next time I went for a take down. I got it, but then started to bleed pretty good! :D

Thanks!

FWIW i am in excellent shape, prior service military and i have to tell you the best program i can recommend for you guys doing this is spend the cash on P90X. The program is AWESOME. A buddy of mine who runs marathons got me turned onto it. The first week sucks. the first time i did the 1.5 hours of yoga i was dripping like a freakin faucet. Its pretty cheap on ebay as well. I can attest that sticking to it works much better than doing just a traditional program.

Great idea! I've done a little bodybuilding, and I am NASM certified personal trainer. If anyone has any questions, I'd be glad to help!

Dang, a gun show.

There is a bench press competetion at our gym in 4 weeks...I am questioning if I should compete or not. There isn't a chance I can even place in the top three. There are 3 guys that I know can bench double their weight and I am not there yet.

You are always better off after a competition, win or lose. If you got the time to train do it man. Just training for something like that will make you stronger. Just showing up and participating in something that can hurt your ego takes heart and guts. Good luck man. Yeah man I hear ya with the funny ass ounce counting on the gear, put on some muscle and pack the baddest gear you can carry. KNIFEABILITY-a must for all humans

Wow, long time since I last posted - got buried in work so much I had to cut down workout time ...
Got one kilogram to go to reach a 15 kg loss. I will reach that point some time during this week. So I'm not losing as fast as I would like to, as I seem to get stuck on a weight for a week or so pretty often, but the overall tendency is down.

I am still hanging steading at my weight, no drop or increase. I am thinking about changing up a few things to see how it goes. I have about 1.5 months to drop 6 lbs. before my grappling tournament. The division I grapple in is 195#+ and since I usually over around 200# I am usually outweighed by quite a bit. Last year my opponents averaged 60#s on me.

My swimming is getting quite a bit better. I am starting to see improvements, but for some reason my running has gotten worse. I think it's from when I had the flu and took time off. My mile went from around 7:15-7:30 to around 8:30.

Going to have to step it up some and push myself.

I'm in. If only I could enter this retroactively, hahah. Anyway, my current physical goals are as follows...

Last time I got checked officially (Feb 1, 2010) I was:
6' 2"
209 lbs
12.2% BF

By August 25, 2010 I would like to have accomplished the following:
-Ability to do 10 pull-ups continuous
-Ability to do 50 pushups continuous
-Sub 10% BF
-Sub 7 minute mile

The only reason that I'm so specific on the goal date is because it will be the two-year anniversary of my decision to become healthier. I had been obese/morbidly obese pretty much my entire life, and I had no idea just how negatively it had been affecting my life until I started to change things for the better. Everything from reduction in social ineptitude to getting a better job (currently leading backpacking/kayaking/outdoors trips part time, hopefully full time in the future) are becoming possible.

A couple of words for everyone in this thread that I've come to appreciate over the last year and a half:
1. Time is always on your side, because ultimately you've got time to change. The goals are important to set, but unless it's for a contest/event/physical, it matters little whether you achieved your goal in 8 months or 9 months (or 2 years versus 2.5 years).
2. Support is important, whether it is someone you can confide-in in real life or the other members of this group here. No one is strong 100% of the time, especially not under duress, and just having someone to talk to can so often make the difference.
3. People are people. You'll probably "mess up" from time to time...eat something you weren't planning to, miss a workout. Everybody does. This really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things (see point one), and the best thing to do is to get over it immediately and move forward.

Seriously, though, those three tenets have helped me out tremendously on my journey so far.

Photo on the left I was approximately ~48% BF and over 380lbs. Photo on the right I took this morning.

Much luck to you all! You've got every reason to succeed, and I'm sure that you will.

You're a true inspiration for all my friend! I have usually been small and lean, my whole life. But got a little to big for comfort after hs.

I've known my Mrs' since we were younger, we met in 7th grade when I was the new kid in school, she was geeky in school, always played magic cards, d&d, liked to swim and camp, go to band club and practice. braces, the works. I was naturally athletic, thin and lean...after 8th grade I went into football camp and the such for prep for hs. I have been playing fb since even younger, most guys maybe in here can relate.

Anyways freshman year in hs, I bulked up, in my upper body, guns, sported the stomach pack. lol. But really really small compared to other players...I tried to pack on more size a little more unhealthy than I should've...

But in hs I kept burning it all cause of soccer, football, basketball, lacross, you know? After hs, the weekend came after grad, a friend was street racing while it was raining, long story short, he passed away and I was screwed up in the head, I blamed myself, I blamed god, I was a mess.

My Mrs' wouldn't let me go regardless of constant attempts to push her away, some bad, some really bad...but she stuck by me. Did I mention after that grade school to hs summer transition she changed too? Her braces came off, her facial acne was gone, her chest, her hips, etc? She would follow into cheer leading cause her brother and I both were in foot ball...lol.

Anyways after hs and what was going on, than my grand uncle died, followed by another grand uncle, of whom I use to go fishing with as a child but apparently didnt remember lol, but often had bbq's and dirt biking, and both taught me to weld, and one taught me how to shoot, etc.

More crap on the plate. Following xmas built a bike for a close friend of my dads who was a 2nd dad to me, bike had exploded and he suffered burns, I was than and now unsure of myself...everything was mounting and screwing with my head, I was 5'9 and ballooned to 380 pounds, was on insulin, and etc. I was so screwed up. I couldn't even hold tools or anything, so out of shape...

turned out my dads friend? had installed some made in china parts, and they just werent up to snuff. So all the machining work, sheet metal fabbing, from making the wheels to the frame, etc? Nothing I DID was wrong. My stuff was top notch...

I began an extreme fitness regime, and began working really hard to get back on my a game, i went from a 6ish pack heavily defined and ripped to a single tummy keg. I was NOT happy. My Mrs was still lean tight, and fit. She had been approached by many guys, cause shes gorgeous... guys who didnt care if she had a ring on her left hand or NOT.

So about a year and a half ago I dropped to around 210ish, and visited my old hs and began running up and down the bleachers with my dogs...

Than more bills piled up, got laid off at other work, still had stuff for school to pay off. Both Art Center of Pasadena and Wyotech....and well stress mounted more, my sister needed help for her own personal reasons of need.

Than I finally lost my last of 2 jobs which I had been working both full time. So had to move back to so cal, parents offered me to come back home saying its ok, and I can go back to school down here some more, so began working down here since it was easier to find work down here, just didnt pay as much.

I let myself go AGAIN, and ballooned back to 330...So much stress, so much demand, my family is heavily about education, accomplishment, and so on....and its even more complicated, but thats neither for here nor now.

But I no longer have the luxury of unemployment, and have to balance school, and am now seeking a 2nd ft job as well. Trying to make more ends meet, cause I hate selling stuff I own/built. Its like selling off accomplishments or memories...I am attached to them :P

Anyways I first changed my diet, and am low carbbed, cut out processed foods and fast food, no soda, no alcohol. No high salt foods, no sugary foods. Water water water. Now that I am detoxing my body, I also ordered the p90x and its after program, I have had alot of friends who were naturally big people their whole life who've been on it for a while now, and suggest having a video trainer is great guidance and training. So thats what I will do. Cause I actually hate having to train or do things by myself :P

And old football routines are just not cutting it.

I was 330 when I decided to make another go, and to STAY on it for good, when I was stranded with a friend and car croked. I didn't know how to make a shelter of any kind, I was stupid enough to think everything was ok, all I had was a bench folder knife. I thought my friend with his bag full of magic tricks was just paranoia. His big huge rat cutlery knife and smaller one. His knowledge his gear, helped safeguard and keep us alive.

I realized my weight and inept knowledge, or pure ignorance could and will get me killed.

After laying around after cutting pistachio trees and grape trees and vines, and sitting around a fire, I was like dude? I miss being like 160 something or 170 something of all muscle...remember how I use to be back in hs? he was like yah...I was the fat kid and you were mr cool automotive biker boy sports man....

I laughed....

My feet all blistered and screwed up... As of this morning I am at 290 or so, thats 40 pounds since my ordeal. If I was out there alone? who knows what could've happened.

His words to me?

Having all the name brand goodies and gear is great, but without knowledge or physical conditioning to improve your chances? youre cooked.

Its like with cars, having all the name brand tools, and having the best car parts and car as a base are useless if you dont know how to use the tools, or how to tune a car after its had parts installed, from engine to suspension refining.... its all relevant.

So I am going to work my butt off to get back to a good weight, and I sure as hell cant be vegetarian like I was when I was a kid, so if I at least can cut out heavily processed and enhanced foods, and beverages. And sweets? Than yay.

If I want to expect to fully use and take advantage of my gears full potential, than I must expect of myself what I want to of my gear, and education I have so far and intend to garner. I must save first $ for courses by Jeff and Mike, than after I have enough, go only once I am fit and conditioned.

I know a long post, I'm sorry :( but thats me! Everyone has their life stories and issues or tragedies that have happened, my life has been marked by many deaths and painful learning experiences.

But I want to be a stronger healthier person. And You All are trying to better yourselves, so I will too :)

My Weight keeps yoyoing, so hopefully with a little more structured guidance and use of p90x and my bowflex equipment, and continued running, I will drop down, and get back to that cut and fit guy my Mrs' deserves :) and know that in the future? If anything should happen? I will be equiped, if not in gear but body and mentally wise.

I am rooting for you guys! All of you! This is awesome, the Esee Fitness Club! :D

KNIFEABILITY- A must for all humans

Knife I have been having pain in my chest muscles not like my heart under them, but just the muscle, this is normal right? I am as of last night doing less push ups, to see if that helps, and may substitute more with swimming to change it up a bit.

Have you heard of other people in gym using p90x? Alot of the people I know who've used it continue the exercises and have lost more than their weight loss goals, and have maintained the loss thus far, some for almost 2 years or more since they started, one friend started in 05, and went from a 360 to 180 something and has stayed there, and ended up achieving a goal, he wanted to be fit enough to become an officer.

Can you suggest any exercises for the neck? Closest gym is about 30 miles away, and only gym equipment I have is a bowflex I just got, trying to minimize space use.

Anyone here doing Yoga?

WOW, you inspire me. Excellent job! The safest way to train your neck without equipment is manual resistance using your hands on the front, back, and sides of your head sounds silly, I know, but it works. Do 12 reps two sets in each direction three times per week. Apply pressure with the palms of your hands against your forehead and go all the way back and foward 1 rep increase pressure as your neck gets stronger. Same for all directions placing your palms accordingly. KNIFEABILITY-a must for all humans

No no not me, a few other people I know have used that program, most of the routines were rooted in football and school p.e. class style exercises. I have been seeking a better guided program, and with 20-30 people i know across the nation who use to be class mates, to ex co-workers doing the program p90x and plus, and or insanity. Have reach their goals phenomenally. So guided sessions like from the dvds seem to be in order, especially since I am bogged down alot with work and school, I rarely have a chance to miscly drive 30 or so miles to gym.

And I will try those for my neck.
I think its also tension built up because of classes and work. Which is common for most people I think.

Just by setting your mind to this goal is what inspires me. P90x is fantastic and is a system of muscle confusion so you don't hit plateaus. It's genius.
