Boom Parang. . . . . . Sneak Peek!!! . . . Pics & Specs . . .

This was a really helpful post to put things in perspective. Thanks.

I hate to do it, but I think I'm going to have to pass on this one. :( Too many similar in this size already. And no money.

FWIW, while doing some measurements and trying to get an idea of where this would fit in my current lineup, I took this picture.

Top to Bottom:
  • SYKCO 1311 (13 1/2" blade to handle; 1 3/4" wide)
  • SYKCO 1111 (11 3/16" blade to handle; 1 13/16" wide)
  • Busse Battle Saw (11 1/8" blade to handle; 2 1/16" wide)
  • Swamp Rat MountainManDu (10 1/8" blade to handle; 1 15/16" wide)

So the take-away from this (at least for me) is that the 1311 and 1111 are essentially the same width the whole length of the blade as the maximum width of the BOOM Parang. I just don't see the BP out-chopping the 1311 for this reason. Besides brand, the biggest difference in the BP will be the reverse tapered blade and the curved edge vs. the 1311 and 1111. HTH.

ETA - Also, to my eye, it looks like the height of the saber grind on the 1311 is similar to the BP's.

ETA2 - These pics should be here.

If you blow the picture up so that the blade is actual size according to specifications on your desktop monitor and measure the width of the blade at it's thickest point near the tip it measures out to 2 1/8 inches. Well, at least it does on my screen lol. But unless we knew the actual native resolution of the picture there is no truly accurate way to tell.

Well we know that it's 1.6-1.8 inches. We have that confirmation from the shop. It's definitely not as tall the picture might lead us to believe based on the angle by which the picture was taken. Cheers to all who scored!

Interestingly enough it also measures out to 1.6 inches from edge to spine right where the Busse logo is, which is what the specifications state. I really hope my estimate is close because the variance in thickness would mean it has a nice weight forward feel to it that would definitely lend itself to the blades chopping performance. I'm so glad I made this purchase!

Rob, this is true. the angle of the picture could also make for significant variance in my estimate. I'm just hoping :)

The angled pics Jerry uses for these releases look awesome (whether in the light box or on the sharpening wheel), but they make it hard to really get a feel of what the blade will really look like when it arrives. I bought one of the Ganzaaaa Camo Recurve 911's thinking it had a wider belly than the standard production 911. When it arrived, the edge was just recurved where it would have been straight on a production 911, making the knife narrower/lighter than anticipated. The knife ended up completely different once in hand than how the picture made it look. I'm teetering precariously on the fence on this one and could easily be swayed to jump on it if a profile pic with some paracord or other common items were included for size reference before the 72hr dealio is up. Fingers crossed.;):thumbup:

Either way, it appears to have one of the most user friendly handles to come out of the Busse shop, EVER!

THAT ALONE is why I'm sooooooo tempted.;)

I think you should buy it while the price is right. If you don't love it I'll be happy to buy it off you in the exchange! Dual wielding Boom Parangs sounds like fun! :D

What combo ya thinking Anttheknee? PM me if ya rather to take it there.

I'd still like to see another angle though.:D

Stump, I also like a good side profile pic to help out, in this case I sketched out a rough guide based on the given dimensions. This is by no means accurate, but might help give "some perspective" I should note that I did end up purchasing one...

I ordered mine in Green Canvas and Tanker gray . Was having a difficult time choosing between Tanker and Sage but ultimately went with the tanker because that is what my MS ergo is, and the two of them are going to be hanging out together a lot. Figured that way they'd at least match. When I first saw the pic I just gotta real good feeling about this one. I just saw it sailing through a 2X4 in three swings in my head lol.

It me or does 5.75 seem a little large for the handle? could it be that the cutting edge is 11" and maybe the ricasso another 3/4"? that would make 11 3/4" from handle to tip. 5.25" inch handle sounds more likely looking at other Busse blades in the 10" and up category.

I took a pic against the Team Gemini and the ASH 1 for comparison. . . . Not a great pic but you get the idea. . . . .

The Boom Parang is an awesome chopper with incredible balance!!!

Hope this helps,

yea the sketch doesnt have the scales added in, the 11" is strictly the cutting edge, while the 5.75 is "everything else" including the ricasso that has the talon hole...

Oh man...... this thing is going to be a beast.....what am I supposed to do until it gets here??? I can't stop thinking about it lol. I'm gonna run out of Bourbon real quick at this level of suspense!

Redwood thank you for taking the time to sketch that out.

Jerry thank you for the side pic. I may have to come out of retirement, and buy a new model.
