Boom Parang. . . . . . Sneak Peek!!! . . . Pics & Specs . . .

This might depend on whether you prefer a lighter, faster blade for chopping, or heavier, slower one. The 1311 will fall towards the former, and this parang, which has more steel behind the edge (taller blade at equal thickness), is the latter.

I already have too many choppers, but this one has me looking to see what else I can sell to fund the Parang.

And then the Bolo 13 is coming. Right, Jerry?

Right, Jerry?

In my humble opinion I would give the edge in chopping power to the 1311 based on specs. It has a longer Blade which is going to generate more speed in a swing. The stock thickness of both are relatively similar if I am not mistaken, and from pictures they both appear to be saber ground. I could very well be wrong though as ergonomics and general feel in hand play a roll in chopping power also.

I ordered a green and a maroon. I have to have something to dual wield until the B13 arrives.

Gents I have confirmation from Jerry that it is a flat saber grind. They don't know the exact weight yet. They'll let us know when it's in production. Hope this helps. I'm thinking this knife will weigh more than 20 ounces but less than 25

If'n I owned a rib shack, I'd get one just to chop the ribs. Nice blade. Very tempted. Fear the forced perspective is making the sweep appear more than it really is. Tough call. Wish we could get better pix. Or at least different angle pix.

I feel like this thing could quarter an elephant.
I'm pumped and anxious to see how this and my ASH-2 stack up.

The B13 will almost certainly be better for batoning wood. The tall Parang blade means a lot of surface contact/friction as you try to beat it down the length of a cut wood section.

The Chophouse Lean means I'm sitting this one out too.
Happy feasting HOGS!! :pig:

Now about those two new Micarta colors.... YESH!!!!!!!!

Once again fellow Hogs --- speculation is unnecessary. We have confirmation that's it's a flat saber grind from Jerry.

I hate to do it, but I think I'm going to have to pass on this one. :( Too many similar in this size already. And no money.

FWIW, while doing some measurements and trying to get an idea of where this would fit in my current lineup, I took this picture.

Top to Bottom:
  • SYKCO 1311 (13 1/2" blade to handle; 1 3/4" wide)
  • SYKCO 1111 (11 3/16" blade to handle; 1 13/16" wide)
  • Busse Battle Saw (11 1/8" blade to handle; 2 1/16" wide)
  • Swamp Rat MountainManDu (10 1/8" blade to handle; 1 15/16" wide)

So the take-away from this (at least for me) is that the 1311 and 1111 are essentially the same width the whole length of the blade as the maximum width of the BOOM Parang. I just don't see the BP out-chopping the 1311 for this reason. Besides brand, the biggest difference in the BP will be the reverse tapered blade and the curved edge vs. the 1311 and 1111. HTH.

ETA - Also, to my eye, it looks like the height of the saber grind on the 1311 is similar to the BP's.

ETA2 - These pics should be here.

I'm basing the weight estimate on similar size blades of the same thickness and length such as the Bark River Golok who's dimensions are nearly identical with a weight of 18.25 ounces. The Golok's blade appears slightly less wide which is why I added a few ounces to the Parang's weight estimate.

That's what I was thinking. The Boom Parang appears to have similar dimensions to the Bark River Golok. I think it will be one heck of a bushcraft tool.

The upside to the BP is it should be about one of the easiest blades to sharpen in the Bussekin lineup. :)

If I ask really nicely, may we please have some comparison pic's? Say with a pabst, pork belly, or paul's? Hell set it next to an 8lug rim.
