Bose Knives

Oh happy day! Checked my mail today and what do I find but an invoice from Reese! After seven years my first ever custom ordered knife is done. 4" stag backpocket, can't wait to see it.

Came home to a missed delivery notice and hopped right back into the car to race to the post office. Got there shortly before closing and claimed my prize. Almost 7 years in waiting and it was well worth it.

I'm really picky...like really picky such that most things for which I have high expectations end up disappointing me in some way. It's a problem. Before opening the pouch I kept reminding myself that even though it's a Bose knife it's still handmade and it may not be absolutely perfect. I shouldn't have worried...I've never had anything so perfect in my possession. Blade centering is dead in the middle, back spring is absolutely flush in all three positions, grinds are perfectly symmetrical, and the fit and finish are really just flawless. I'm pretty much in awe after spending an hour with it.

As one who has enjoyed knives from the "The Old Dog" and now his son, I completely understand your feelings of joy
and satisfaction. Beautiful example of the BackPocket", superior stag and just a pleasure to view.

Congratulations on your newest acquisition,
Jeff

Thanks guys! I updated with some better pics, not perfect as the light was a little funky, but my camera battery was dying so I had to work quick. Last picture shows blade centering well but doesn't accurately show the butt end of the knife really, the scale thickness is very even between the two sides in person even though the one side looks much thicker in that picture, trick of perspective and shadows it seems.

I basically spent all of last night sitting around sippin some bourbon and CF'n it! Stayed up way later than I should have too. I'm so happy with it I think I might have to give Reese a call later to let him know...and also put myself back on his list for another one :) Maybe a swayback jack to partner with this one.

That's a beauty!

Now for the $64,000 question. Will you be using that fine knife?

Yes, that is the plan! It may take me a few days to wrap my head around putting it in my pocket but it'll get there.

Congrats on your new baby. The stag that Reese used looks very much like the stag covers on the 4 1/8" version I received from Tony some years back:

Thanks! And yes it does. I really like stag with strong horizontal textures like that on the backpocket knives, I've seen a few of them with this type of stag and I find it particularly well suited to the pattern.

I have a pretty decent digital SLR, send it to me and I should be able to get some nice pictures for you in a few weeks ;):D

Beautiful knife! Thanks for sharing, great to see and I'm sure it will be very rewarding to carry and use.

Gorgeous knife from Reese! Congratulations on a real treasure!

Question for the BoseHos. Do the Wilfred Boys make a front pocket knife? The BP is such a great design and I like everything about slide13's knife, except for the size that is. Just not practical for me. If only that knife was available in 3 3/4", maybe even 3 1/2" it would be near perfect.

Christian, fwiw, the 4 1/8" version I posted above works very well in a front pocket, nomenclature notwithstanding.

Thanks for your insight Elliott. I don't doubt the 4 1/8" version carries well, I've carried a couple of knives that size in the past with no problems. However as I've gained more experience in this hobby I've developed very definite preferences. I overwhelmingly favor single blades now, and I've realized that 3 3/4" is the sweet spot for me, carrying and using-wise. If Reese offers the knife above in a scaled down version I am going to be very excited. That's my hope, we are talking custom knives after all.

Christian, I totally understand. It's horses for courses. The 3 3/4" size is a very useful sweet spot and I have had many customs built for me in that range.

What I tend to do now is carry my larger knives in and around my home and property as well as during outdoor activities...and carry the smaller knives in and around town, to restaurants, libraries etc.

This way I get to enjoy the entire range. I admire your ability to pare down your interest to single bladed knives...fortunately or unfortunately (for me) I am unable to impose such a restriction on my tastes. :p

I have never seen a backpocket pattern smaller than the 4" I got from Reese. Pretty sure such a pattern doesn't exist, no idea if Reese would make a non-catalog knife like that, maybe others here do or you could always call and ask him.

I think a lot of people looking for that size of single blade knife end up at the Lanny's Clip. The Bose catalog lists it at 3 3/4" though I've seen it marked as 3 7/8" as well. It's also a great single blade pattern that I have always considered a classic Bose pattern.

If you find something you like you should definitely get on his list for something, the wait is still long, but not quite as long as when I ordered my backpocket. I called him up to let him know how much I liked my new knife and to thank him for building it for me and also put myself down on his list again. Going for a 3 1/2" swayback jack in Reese's brown jigged bone with fluted bolsters and an older style federal shield that Reese suggested since I wanted something different from my backpocket, just for fun.

Figure this will be a great combo with my backpocket as I'll have it's clip blade, then the wharny and pen on the swayback. Plus it'll get me my two favorite handle materials (stag and Reese's jigged bone) and my two favorite bolster styles (pinched backpocket and fluted).
