Bose Knives

Tony, is a Bose shadow stronger than one with bolsters?
The way I think of it is: in the Bose shadow patterns with micarta scales, you have a continuous sandwich structure of micarta+epoxy+stainless liner for each scale, with no weak points -- any stress is distributed over the whole scale.

When you have a bolster+scale+liner structure, you have the line where the bolster and scale meet where only the liner is there to give any support (plus the epoxy between the scale and bolster - but there's very little contact area there to give strength, and the stress would be directly along the glue line) -- stress concentrates at the structurally weakest point.

I think they are stronger when made with micarta because there is no joint where the handle material meets the bolster. That is the weakest place on a bolstered knife. I've seen old knives that were bent at that point from abuse. You can tear any knife up because they can't be made stupid proof. This type of shadow construction will take a lot.

Now that is a great line.

Thank's everyone, for keeping this thread alive and kicking. This info from Tony is real interesting about the strength of the shadow pattern.
As far as carrying my custom knives....I'll fess up,I carry them all, just not all at once (of course),and I carry them accordingly,to what I think I might be needing a knife for,on that particular day.I always have a small fixed blade in a pocket pouch,on my left side,if I need a knife to do a little "harder",or abusive type chore,I'll go for that.I do not see, how,in my lifetime,I could ever really wear one particular knife out.Now if I only had just one knife, like Boogie (a friend of Tony's,lol),I may have a shot at it.A lot of you guys know that thread from the "other" fine forum,I found that one to be facinating.
Carry those knives...Safe Queens are just a disgrace, you don't have to cut tarpaper and sheets of 50 grit sand paper with them, but carry 'em !!!
BTW,Maybe Gus could make this thread a sticky,I think that Tony ,Reese ,and thier knives deserve that,What do ya say ?
Thank You,
Vince

Yeah,I saw it,rub it in why don't ya.
No really,Congrats, you better not turn it into a Safe Queen.

 ATS-34 blades and springs, 410 SS liners and fluted bolsters. India Stag handles.
SS pinned old federal shield. Going to the Blade Show

You want to watch something just a little bit nerve racking? I watched Reese put the rattail flutes
on the bolsters of this knife. It was practically finished and perfect and that's when he starts in with
the chainsaw file and cuts the flutes. There is a lot of opportunity to screw up a project at that stage.

Try reloading the pics of the R. Bose 3 1/2 wharencliff trapper, all is see is a warning the pic are not loaded. Or just mail me the knife so I can examine it. If this is not do able email me the pics as a last resort mind you, I would prefer option 2.
