Well as some of you know I had a friend who was recently killed in a wreck. I am out of town to attend his service and be there for his family.

While I was on my way down there I stopped at this little shop called richards relics. Its a little dive that has arrowheads, indian artifacts, fossils knives, and everything in between. Heres the up side......

I scored a custom takedown recurve bow.

62"
45-28"
58" AMO

Its made by a guy named john who company is called 44 bows. Richard(the shop owner) said its at least 25 years old, and he took it in trade awhile back , and hung it up in the shop for sale. He deals in guns mostly, so he didnt know much about it.

Heres the best part 50.00!!!!:eek::eek: He had 75 on it, but w/o askin he said hed sell it for 50.00 I felt bad the man had no clue what he had. No cracks, straight as an arrow, in very nice shape. I looked it over real good for cracks and damage, and bought it on the spot.:D

cool looking bow J... that is definately a score... 45# is a perfect weight to start out with...

drop me a line if you have any questions about getting it tuned... those takedowns can be a bit tricky...:o

also check out the arrow making tutorial that my father in law, gearman79, did over at rammy...:D

There is a bit more to this story.......
Bad news is its a lefty...... So I couldnt pass on this deal, I figure I can trade it for righty, or maybe send the limbs, and have someoneuse them to make me a righty. Any suggestions?

huh... i probably would have done the same thing...:o

though it looks like a righty to me..... that is the arrow shelf, right above where you grip the bow...

Damn dude. The tag said lefty, and the thing came unstrung, so I just checked it over real good for damage, made sure it fit up right, and bought it. I just put it together, I think youre right. I cant figure why it said lefty:confused:

right on... did it come with a string??

No string..... I need one, how do I measure that and where do I go from here as far as stringing it up and where and what kind to buy?

The finish also is worn in spts, how would I go about refinishing it?

www.3riversarchery.com will have a string and a bow stringer... they'll probably also have some finishing wax of some sort... is the 58' or 62'... i would go with the AMO measurements, as far as string...

while your spending $$$ at 3rivers.. check out the traditional bowhunters handbook by t.j. conrads... it is a very informative book and is pretty up to date... it'll answer a lot of questions..

I will get that book, Ive been meaning to for a while....... Any particular brand of string?

I wasnt even looking to buy a bow today(funds are a little tight), but when I saw this my wifey even said, go for it, that a great deal............

I appriciate your help mike, and everyone else, I am new to this sport, but im a quick learner, and very patient......

Do I need to strip the finish, or just build it back up with the wax?

no particular brand of string... 3rivers will have a few different ones to choose from... you'll probably need a glove too.. i use the damascus brand.. they're my/our favorite so far..

i'm stoked for you man.. you'll have to get your boys to start shooting too...

i would'nt strip any of the finish... maybe just clean it up a bit... i've even used pledge furniture polish, a few times..

BE ADVISED... this is a whole other addiction.. :D next you'll be saving up for a fancy custom made to your specs...:o

My 10 year old already shoots. After talkin to ya awhile back, He was waaay more into compound bows, so we got him a decent one, and he loves it. Looses arrows left and right, but thats OK.
I tried showin him Trad stuff, but he liked the compound ones.....Kids:rolleyes:

There is hope, cause after I get home and he sees this one, He might just change his mind.:D

I think I am gonna run up to our archery shop when I get back, and see what he has for gloves and string and arrows to start with while I prepare to make some..........

I also am gonna mak an armguard with a sheath on it for my gossman PSK.

I might have to sell of some guns to get this thing in full swing.:o

as long as your boy is happy shooting.. that's a good thing... my son, luckily, was never into compounds.. he thinks they're odd looking...:D

arm guards are a lot of fun to make.. i put some antler buttons on mine..

i know how it goes man... i have sold quite a few knives in the past, to maintain my archery addiciton.. good luck...:D

Its great hes outside doin something with his summer......

Another grommet question...What with the fuzzballs I see on peoples bowstrings?

I would advise using a Dacron string not any low stretch material commonly refered to as fast flight.

Also, since you are new to trad archery, don't stand it in a corner. It will cause the limb to warp.Best to hang it from two pegs supporting it close to the riser.

Also never leave it strung in a hot car or even in very hot sunlight too long.

Sorry to hear about your friend.

the fuzzballs are called string silencers..they help reduce/dampen the string vibrations, after the bow is shot.. they also work great for reducing any noise or hand shock... not to mention the fact that they just look cool..:D

check out this page.. http://www.3riversarchery.com/longbow-recurve.asp some cool info.. they talk about string silencers at the bottom..

right on bro.. have a good one... talk to you soon... you got my # if you want to drop me a line one of these days...
