bowers score of a lifetime!

Hey Richard..want to make a 400% profit? what is the draw? 45??? or 28"..28" is to small for me, but I have a shorter Brother on the hunt for a good recurve.
Either way, that is one helluva find!!!! Good for you Bro! That is the kind of deal that makes your month!

:eek:thanks for the generous offer Gene!, but I think Im gonna hang on to this one for awhile. Ive been wanting a trad bow for awhile:o.......

Youre right though, with all the crap Ive had goin on lately, this was a VERY nice suprise, made my month for sure. I cant wait to get out and start shootin it.

Oh, whos richard? Im jake.

You tryin to call me a dick?:D

Damn dude. The tag said lefty, and the thing came unstrung, so I just checked it over real good for damage, made sure it fit up right, and bought it. I just put it together, I think youre right. I cant figure why it said lefty:confused:

That's probably why it was so cheap...how much demand could there be for a bow built for left handers who shoot with the wrong hand?

:D

I arrived home early yesterday morning and cleaned up the bow a bit. I steel wooled the whole thing and put on 3 coats of tung oil with my finger as a brush.

I also replaced the arrow rest and plate with ones I made from some leather I harvested out of an old pair of shoes. The old ones were very stiff and cracked and almost falling off.

Last I cut some new felt pads for the limbs as the old ones hd seen better days.

Next will come a string, and stringer, and a leater grip. Stay tuned..........

That is an excellent score, jw, good on you! I've alway wanted a takedown bow. I might make one using one of 3Rivers take-apart sleeves.

One time, while working, I stopped at a lawn sale and saw an all fibreglass recurve with no string for $7.00. The guy said it was an excellent bow and it drew 70# (the 70 on the bow turned out to be some kind of catalog # I guess, because the bow draws 50# @ 28 inches). I made a string for it and have been shooting it ever since.

It is one ugly brute (ugly green paint job) but it is an excellent beater.

Also bought a 72# all-steel takedown bow for $5.00 from a friend. Unless I'm shooting all the time, the draw weight is a bit much for me, but I like its bomb-proofedness (?). I have never taken it apart because it's older and I don't want to take a chance on the screws stripping.

This is a poor picture of the steel bow:

Looks like a cool one. Is it heavy?

The place I got this one from had like 20 selfbows and a couple recurves. He had a nice fiberglass backed recurve for 100. He didnt have a bow in there that cost more than 125.00. I am gonna go back down once I can get caught up a bit and get my boys each a selfbow.

Is it a hard task to make your own string?

I believe what you got there is one of them amphibious bows. Ya know, the kind you can shoot either left or right handed. Seriously though, nice bow. I haven't shot a recurve in years and I'm envious.

It's not particularly heavy in weight, just in draw weight, at least for me.

Making your own string is pretty easy. I learned how from the Traditional Bowyers Bibles. BTW, Tim Baker wrote an excellent chapter on strings and cordage in Volume 2 - it, alone, is almost worth the price of the book. I've made both endless string and Flemish strings. It's like anything else, once you learn how....................

Thats pretty neat. Ill bet its a fast bow though.....

I will have to find that book too, id like to learn how to make my own strings and arrows, so I can make this hobby as self sufficiant as possible.

Thanks!

Thanks Brian, Ive always been good with woodworking, so this came pretty natural. once the old finish was cleaned up a bit (it looked like crap, but its older then me, so go figure!) the grain really popped out, there is alot of depth to the grain.

For 50.00, its unbelievable.

Hey jw, get at least the first 3 volumes - they are excellent! And aside from the obvious immediate benefits, you get to teach your boys and their kids! :)

They cover bow making, strings, cordage, some flint knapping, glues, points, cutting and seasoning wood, finishes, and the list goes on.

If you want to go right to the horse's mouth (sorry Jim Hamm :(), otherwise there's always Amazon - note that there is hard and soft cover editions.

Mike, I looked at the table of contents of Vol. 4 and thought I would save the money, but maybe not................:( and of course, I'll have to get the hard cover to match the other three :(.
