BPS Knives of Ukraine

Maybe glass breaker or something a little more sinister. Just guessing
I hadn't thought of glass breaker.
Maybe there's a fad for clip-on lanyards that I haven't heard of. It isn't unusual for me to miss a fad memo.

My other one, the smaller camper.

A week ago I ordered a knife from Amazon for $40!!!

Insanely happy with the purchase, the knife passed my personal test drive.
I took it from stainless steel, I have never regretted that I overpaid $ 5 for it, since a carbon steel knife costs $ 34.
Share your impressions about this model, I want to hear you

What a bargain! 😎 Personally, I prefer carbon steel, but BPS's stainless is good too 👍

Be warned that the Amazon link may get you into trouble for breaching the sub-forum guidelines 👍

BPS knives are fantastic knives, regardless of the cost. But if you figure in the cost, it will be hard pressed to find better fixed blade knives for the cost.

I think every BF forum members should own at least one 😁

Did they change their sheath material at some point? I have several BPS knives now, and most of the sheaths are a nice quality leather.

Most recent one is terrible though, it seems synthetic and has just a really weird gross unnatural quality to it, like it's too smooth and too evenly tanned.

This one also came in a different kind of box, not the brown box w/green lettering, it's a white box with Russian writing on it.

Love the knife, but the sheath is awful. Guessing this is an older version knife? This is the BS2. New sheath on the left and sheath from another BPS on the right, both received the exact same treatment.

If I have an issue with this, do I contact BPS directly?

All the sheaths I've had have been great quality. I've always ordered direct from Ukraine, so BPS don't have to cut Amazon in. Most of the boxes have been white, with black writing - I think that's Ukrainian writing, rather than Russian! :D The last couple I got had green writing I think, but no difference in the quality. I hope you just got a one-off, and that they're sticking with the high quality leather. I did have an issue where my Savage sheath was a little tight, so I just bought a new one, figured they had enough to deal with at the moment, and the new sheath was inexpensive. Each time I've ordered, I've told them not to worry if the knives don't reach me

This little Victorinox sharpener worked great for touching up the edge of the carbon steel. I used 400cw sandpaper (what I had handy) to knock off some of the shine of the polished finish. I'm thinking about either staining the handle or just wiping on some BLO, still undecided on that.

I highly recommend oiling/staining/waxing/anything to the scales. I think it takes it a few steps forward from where it starts. I have two HK1's, one has been treated and the other is as it was out of the box. I'll try to get a side-by-side photo.

Try posting on their Instagram @bpsknives. They have a pretty good relationship with their customers. They can always help in everything, I have contacted more than once

Here are my two HK1's... Top has been oiled and treated a few times. I don't think I wiped it down much after the last time, so it looks a little wet here. Bottom is the one that had a few spots on the blade remaining from rust... I haven't decided if I'll keep or return it, so it's fresh out of the box. The HK1 has become my favorite so far, so I'm not against having two.

These are both walnut. Your BS1 has ash handles, so it'll look a bit different if you oil it. All are handsome little knifes.

They both look good but the top one looks fantastic. What oil did you use? I’m going to oil mine for sure, I know they’re different species of wood, but I really like how yours turned out.
The blade on mine developed some pitting from me leaving it dirty for a couple days, I used it in my basement sink and forgot all about it! I took the handles off and cleaned the tang and inside part of the handles really good. After doing that and sanding the blade, I’ve become quite attached to it. It just needs some oil now and it will be lovely.

pat9198 pat9198 thank you! First, I made sure the scales were sanded and smooth, and were well fitted to the blade. On all the BPS knives I've had, it's needed some sanding to get things flush

I'm not sure if it was a good idea or not, but I took the scales off and soaked them in Teak Oil for a few hours. Might have been overnight, I kind of forgot about them. Took them out, quickly wiped off the excess and set them out to dry. I lightly sanded with some 400 grit and 4-O steel wool to polish it, and then have done about 5 layers of beeswax. Put it on, let it sit for a day, wipe it off and let it dry, then repeat.

I'm making it up as I go along, but don't think I've broken any rules, haha. I just wanted it to look darker and to accentuate the (nice!) grain of the wood. Seems to be mission accomplished.

Oh and the blade patina was sort of an accident too. There were some rust spots on the blade, and that dang thing is so sharp, I didn't feel comfortable rubbing it... And it was a bit stubborn... so I put some rust remover jelly on it, and again, forgot about it for a few hours. Ack! It was ugly as hell when it first finished, and the mirror shine was long gone... But it's evened out pretty nicely since then. I still like the vinegar bath patina on my adventurer a bit better (much more even), but I think they all look great.

Thank you very much for taking the time to walk us through your process, and I'll likely do it in similar fashion. I've already sanded the handles flat where they contact the tang while I had it apart. I think I'll force a patina on the entire blade and tang to try and prevent any future corrosion. The odds of me forgetting to clean it imediatley again are unfortunately high.

What do you think about this knife? I saw it on the bps website and amazon. Haven't seen it on users before.

I think I've seen it in somebody's group shot of his bps knives. Maybe in the good old fixed blades thread, if not here.
To me it looks like an awkward compromise between a Mora and a Sabatier.
