Breeden Knife Number Three, and some Firestarting Under Very Wet Conditions

Well..the first one we worked on together and because of our mutual habits of just walking through the woods and looking for signs...whatever signs we may find... it was dubbed the Recon because that is basically what we both do just out of habit. However, as much as I liked the design I kept cutting my finger on the razor sharp edge just in front of the guard (which I had originally requested thinking it better for a woods and "survival" knife to have more edge) out of a lifelong habit of hooking my finger around the guard. So when it was mentioned that the design could have tactical uses that really worried me so I made a couple of changes to the blade angles, the handle shape, and added the "choil" to serve as a place to grip the knife on extrication and it was then dubbed the Combat Recon...and actually I like the idea of having Bryan make one of those up with a double guard too, but a straight one. But...there were still aspects that really precluded it from tactical use. I felt an actual tactical knife needed a double guard for a few reasons...more leverage for twisting, more places to grip for removing the knife from a body, and a retention strap (which I feel a battle blade needs much more so than a pouch sheath) and one that wouldn't be cut by the blade upon drawing to name a few. Then I liked the angled guard for more support and more comfort (less trauma to the hand) in a plunging blow. I still drew this one out with a larger handle for more comfort when using it for prolonged periods, and while chopping and such so it would still function well and comfortably in a woods/survival environment...hence the name...Warthorn.

Fear not, the next designs are more traditional woods and hunting knives, and geared more to fieldcraft and bushcraft....well...there is another tactical in the works, maybe even two or three if he is interested, but that will be a while yet.

Just a few more pics:D

My orange handled one.

I put black liners on this one. I thought the black liners look pretty cool.

A couple of Green handled Warthorn :D

101_1780.jpg

A sheath that has no finish on it yet but with a rounded bottom instead ot the one like Mistwalkers has.

I like the looks of that six inch, more so maybe if you just lowered the line of the spine a bit...you know me and my thoughts on narrower blades. However...that tactical orange really isnn't growing on me yet lol. Maybe in a different style or larger knife like I'd use trail clearing or something. Mainly I think I'd feel like a walking target lol.

Hi all,

Mistwalker, thanks yea I did take the line of the spine down just a bit. Yep LOL after chatting with you about the narrower blades I understand your thoughts. Well untill you get a orange handled knife you really do not know what you are missing LOL The orange is great for SAR Operations and for the non tactcial times. Orange seems to put the sheeple at ease. I know that sounds kind of crazy but it seems to work.

Well I made up a sheath for this knife and thought I would show if off.

In this pic I the sheath and then the Warthorn knife and a little knife that I made that I carry on the back of the sheath, then a firesteel pouch and then a pouch to hold a ceramic sharpening rod for both knives.

101_1828.jpg

In this pic. I am showing the back of the sheath with the little knife in its pouch and then I also made a cross peace for the vert/horz carry or if the a person wanted to carry there knife and sheath on a strap like on your shoulder bag or for the upside down carry on the combat rigs that the Marines and Soldiers have. I am not sure if they still carry there knives like that or not but it is a option that I did for my sheath anyways.

101_1827.jpg

Then this pic is the front with both knives in there place and the firesteel and the sharpener in there pouchs too.

In this pic I have both my Warthorns.

101_1831.jpg

The Green handled Warthorn has a more basic leather sheath and the orange one has a more complexed leather sheath. That one took me a little while to do LOL.

I have been on several hikes with the orange handle knife and sheath and so far I really like the sheath over the pouch type sheaths that I have been making in the past for the knives I make. LOL for the first couple of days I would grabb my knife handle and start to pull my knife out but then relized that I had to unstrap the retaining strap to pull my knife out. I have been using and carrying this sheath for 5 days now and so far so good. Well I think anyways LOL

Thanks again mistwalker for your thoughts on this design and for working with me on it. I just love it.

Thanks for looking.

Bryan

Lol, I said on a different design. I have a brush and cain knife in mind that orange would be great on.

I like that sheath a lot Bryan...lol, now you should make me one like that.

Hi all,
Mistwalker, Brush and Caine knife huh. Cool. LOL
Well if you want a sheath like the one I did for my orange Warthorn. I can do that for ya BUT LOL you will have to send your Warthorn back to me and OH is it going to cost ya too LOL.

Well since we are talking Warthorns. I went for a little walk today along one of our streams here on the farm. I got to one spot and decided to make up a Widget trappers trigger dead fall trap using my 2 Warthorns.

First off I gathered a stick and then cut and kind of chopped it in half and then did a little carving on the ends.

101_1857.jpg

Then I put the notchs in them and carved the ends flat.

101_1867.jpg

then I put the notchs together to see how they fit and carved and squared on the side where the bait stick will go.

101_1871.jpg

Then I got a Bait stick and then marked on it where I was going to make my notch at.

101_1873.jpg

Carved my notch.

101_1874.jpg

I checked the notch to see if it was close to what I wanted and it was i did just a little more carving in it.

101_1875.jpg

Then I put the dead fall together.
101_1877.jpg

Ta da it worked LOL I did not catch any animal with it, but it is fun to pracitce these deadfall setups.

I started on a spear to, but did not get it finished before I had to get going.
maybe I will get it done and post the pic onWednesday.

One thing I can say about the slanted Guard is. That it is really comfy to choke up on the handle for some carving and to be able to put my finger in the choil is just awesome.
Like in this pic.

101_1854.jpg

If this knife had a guard that was NOT slanted and was straight up and down it would not be that comfy to choke up on the blade.

And being able to rest my thumb on the slanted part of the upper guard is really neat too and gives me a lot of control over the knife.

101_1853.jpg

Mistwalker I think your design is a winner. Thanks again for giving me the good fortune to be able to work with you on this knife.

Bryan

Awesome pics Bryan! I have really got to try that widget trigger design.

I don't know if I want to send it back lol, I've sort of gotten used to having it around. Maybe later.

I'm glad you are enjoying yours as much as I am enjoying mine. Thanks for doing such a good job at bringing the design off paper.

Hi all,

mistwalker thanks, It was fun making up that dead fall. The Warthron is a pleasure to use. I have never had a knife like it. I said this before that the slanted part fo the upper guard is so comfy to put my thumb there and I never really relized how much more control I have over the knife by utalizing my thumb or how much more when doing the different cuts because of the slanted tang. I am understanding more about why you wanted the upper tang slanted the more I use it. Looking at these pics. really shows the differents how my thumbs rest on the upper guard of this Chris Reeves knife that has the upper tang straight up and down.

101_1908.jpg

In this pic with my thumb on the slanted upper guard of the Warthorn my thumb rest so much easyer and really feels so much better.

101_1909.jpg

Also being able to really choke up and utilize the choil on the Wathorn's handle and plunge line area is just awesome.

101_1911.jpg

Yea I thought you might feel that way about sending it back. Once you get to using it you do not want to put it down or part with it. Maybe in time you will though LOL.

I did get out and made up a puite dead fall

101_1898.jpg

and then finished my spear with the locust thorns for the tines at the end of the Ash wood sapling that I cut for the spear shaft.

101_1896.jpg

I also had a few mullberies to LOL

101_1897.jpg

It was a cool time out again today making up that piute dead fall and the spear.

Bryan

I also ment to say Mistwalker yea you got to try that Widget trapper trigger and dead fall trap they a fun and real easy to make.

Bryan

Cool pics Bryan, I knew those thorns could be used for something. Eric has started gathering some for me, I don't want to whittle on these I want to keep them as they are for reasons of my own. But I am going to experiment with the ones he sends.

Yeah, for certain purposes I do tend to like a narrower blade. And I do prefer the ergonomics of the handle design on this one for more positive control in more grips.

I really love mulberries, glad I got to eat some while I was out there, they sure were good.

Just out of curiosity, which model C.R. is that? And...what have you done to the handle?

Hi all,

Mistwalker, thanks. Yea them thorns are something. Like I said I will send you some of the locust thorns too with the next ("1--- Well you know LOL;).

yea the ergonnomics on this knife is like no other knife I have every used.
That Chirs Reeves knife is the Project II I think they call it and it does not have the serrations. it has the clip point on the spear point. and I just wrapped some black fishing line around the handle and then aome valck tape to keep it there not pictured is the handled was wrapped with black 550 cord over that.

Caine, Thanks, I am with ya on what you said. I just love this knife design too :D. This knife design is not for everyone

WildMike thanks but this is NOT my design. this is all Mistwalkers thoughts from his times spent surviving in the woods and the urban jungles that he was in. I do thank mistwalker for giving me the chance to build it for him. LOL and to build me a few to LOL. Well and for anyone else who wants one too LOL :D.

Take care all,

Bryan

Thanks Bryan, I am glad you are still liking it...I am still really liking mine.

Thanks, that explains the texture I was seeing on the handle.

I asked Eric to send me a box of them to use in threads and I think he is sending me about a dozen...lol, I was hoping for a bit more than that so yes please do send some, I have some experimenting in mind.

I can see one of these in my future.

I have a feeling you'll like it Jim, mine and Bryan's are a little different....mine is a bit longer. I think her has set up to do both depending on pref. Unless headed to combat or having a thing (like I do) for tactical sized knives the six inch is probably a better all-arounder. I like the extra length for more weight in chopping but that is a personal thing.

Hi all,

Jim thanks and when you are ready for a Warthorn just let me know LOL.

Mistwalker I will get you some of them thorns and send them to.

Bryan

good point about using fork= less wood carving=less chance to cut yourself ;-) and less calories consuption.
