Breeden Knife Number Three, and some Firestarting Under Very Wet Conditions

Hi all,

Mistwalker the pics look great.

I was out in the woods today and thought I would make a Atlatl and see what I could do with it. Well it did not turn out like I wanted so no pics LOL I will try again and see how that goes then maybe I will post some pics then of how I made it and carved it into a useable spear throwing tool with my Warthorn. todays attemp was just not worth taking the pics of what I tried to do LOL. To embarressing to post what I started to do. LOL.

Well....I like some of the features of that design, obviously, so ugly isn't exactly the word I'd use, but I do like the Warthorn design better...it has fewer parts, is more stream lined in form, and it has a tang extension for reasons.

A few more pics from handling this knife.

It's the wrong time of year for me to skin a deer...I've likely broken enough regulations lately...but one of the reasons I like a double tined guard, as well as handle scales that bevel to the blade where they meet (I have modded these just a bit to better fit my hand and my styles of grips), is for the leverage and added control of the knife during use, especially when I am skinning, slicing meat, even cutting up vegetables. I have gotten to where I tend to use this grip a lot because of great the control and versatility in quickly changing directions of cutting.

I also really love the balance and feel it has at this point, it has fluid movement in my hand when changing or rearranging grip and I like that a lot.

Zhangmaster12 I can see som resemblence to the Warthorn. I like the more slanted guard on the Warthorn and then the blade shape better to. I really like having a choil to, Like mistwalker said there are more parts to that 280 knife. I wonder if that 280 knife is a stick or full tang? I agree with the Warthorn looks better too LOL.

Mistwalker, I see that you did make a change to the handle good job. It is more of an acute angel. I really like the hand postions that you use they really make the knife feel like a exstention of your hand / arm. It really makes some of the cutting chores easyer to do. Great pics.

That 12" blade one that I am working on, the balance is just in front of the
of the guard about 1.5" or so and I do not have the handles on it yet. once I get the handles on it. I am thinking it will be at the slanted guard or just in front of it. I can hardly wait LOL.

Also I rigged up the Green handled Warthorn today, to carry on the outside of my leg just below my knee and I wore it like that for a while I tell you that is a pretty darn comfy way to carry that knife. You know when you crouch down that knife is right there ready to be withdrawn from it's sheath if needed LOL. Doing that has given me some ideas now LOL

Anyways,

Thanks your 2 for the pics of the Warthorn and the 280 bowie that you posted,

Bryan

Thanks, it's a grip I use often.

That 12" blade one that I am working on.....

I can't wait to see that one finished. A knife with a blade that long should be somewhat blade heavy...helps in chopping.

Think you're gonna need a low ride sheath for that on...maybe even a dangler type. I can't wait to see it finished.

I used to carry a knife on my calf a lot but that was years ago in scrub woods outside Dallas...it can be dangerous here in the dark.

Hi all,

yea, that might be a thought doing a dangler type sheath, I am thinking of putting some steel loops on each side of the sheath for beinag able to tie the sheath to a pack also.

What is the reason for the dangerous part in in the dark? More info please LOL

Bryan

Hi all,

What is the reason for the dangerous part in in the dark? More info please LOL

Bryan

The mountain side here has many pitfalls covered by leaves and there are many small but tough briar vines thay grow here. Anything that can cause the position of you foot to be other than intended can be dangerous here in the dark....a mis-step can lead to anything from a sprained ankle to a compound fracture...or worse. I won't wear anything strapped to my calf in the woods in the dark here....been there, done that...

Ok I get ya. what about on the inside of your calf instead of on the out side of it or is it just a plain no no?

Bryan

I had problems with it rubbing worn inside but nevver anything really thin either.

I had an idea yesterday so I decided to try something... I just beveled the spine in the scalloped area just a hair to create an accute angle on the left side to make it better for scraping fine fatwood fuzz. Fatwood fuzz takes a spark quicker and burns really hot, but burns quicker than shavings so a mix of both works really well.

You can sort of see it in this picture if you look close.

and here you can see it in use.

Oh, I just noticed tonight that I have a new pet spider.

IMG_5204.jpg

I was fooling around out back a few minutes ago and couldn't resist this pic...the knife just looks at home in the company of a few punji sticks.

IMG_5221.jpg

Hi all,

Oh yea, bring on the punji sticks:eek:, It does look pretty good with them huh :D.

Interesting modification there mistwalker. It looks like some very thin scrapings you got there. How does it do on a firesteel?

As to the leg carry, I am still wanting to see how it goes LOL.

Good looking pic of the spider LOL.

Bryan

It throws sparks ok, but I still prefer the thinner smaller knife for a sparker. I'm told I'd really like part of an old hack saw blade...I'm gonna try that one day.

I am with ya mistwalker, I just love this design and using this knife is like no other I have used before. That slanted guard is the key and having the scalop and the choil in the blade works so darn good for the different hand holds and the cuts like that chest lever cut. I just chock up on the handle and wrap my finger around the top of the slanted guard and edge up and facing back and let my back muscles do the work. I have never had that type of control or that much griping power with any other knife I have made or someone elses.
Of corse the over all look is cool too ;). That blade shape is so cool looking to I think.
LOL but again the slanted tang is the key I feel. wheather you have the edge up or or the edge down and your finger wrapped around that slanted guard it just acts like a exstention of my hand. Even if I do slide my hand to the back of the handle for maximized chopping like I do alot for brush and trail clearing. Mistwalker thanks again :D.
