Breeden Knife Number Three, and some Firestarting Under Very Wet Conditions

6in. Green canvas micarta handle.

Cool, I love the green canvas on mine. I was curious about size as I asked for mine longer, and I love it in the woods...but then had to order a smaller knife for some of my other activities. Looking at Bryan's pics, I think I would have been fine going with the six inch to start with.

This will be my 4th knife from him. And diff. not my last.

Bryan makes some really good knives. I can't wait to get my hands on the smaller one. After the question a friend (who really knows me well) asked me about the bulge in and thump from setting my bag down the last time I was out downtown I'm switching back to one of my smaller knives for urban activities...which sucks because I've really gotten used to carrying this knife.

Hi all,

After making both of yours with the little longer blade I am glad that I went with the 6" over the 6.5". Since mine is my EDC anything longer than 6" with the sheath is to long for getting into the car or truck or just sitting down in a chair.

It will not be long now and You will have your hands on the smaller one LOL.

Facablade LOL you have a point there with what you said. but heck I love using this knife to cut and carve with, it is just freaking awesome.

Bryan

Oh..don't get me wrong I still love my 6.5". It's perfect for woods carry, and especially for here on my own land....but I tend to do a lot of urban travel also and I failed to take that into consideration hence when I came to you about a smaller knife I went with a blade even less than 6 inches. I figured if there was going to be a difference it might as well be a significant difference and customized to less than wilderness environments.

I've just been reading through this whole Topic, Great Stuff, And Thank's Bryan for all the Deadfall Trap picture's you did a great job on them, I'm just keeping up with the New Line of Breeden Knive's, The "Recon" "Combat Recon" and the Warthorn" I got It right now, 6" Blade's are real good for lot's of stuff, But we all like Big Blade's ! But now your coming out with a different design with a shorter Blade, Or the same design's and just the shorter Blade Length ?

Bryan so far what are the different Blade length's you made in this Line of Knive's "In all three design's ?

No..actually there are also Larger ones as well, we've talked about that from the beginig. I am waiting on him to get time to put together one with a 9" to 9.5" inch blade...wish I could have had it sooner but that's just how it goes. I am trying to work out a drawing for one with a 9 inch blade with a retention strap sheath like that of the Warthorn, but smaller has been more usable recently for me. How big of one are you thinking about?

Well I'm not sure on that one, I like the Warthorn design, And If i go with that one a 7" Blade would be perfect, I also like the Combat Recon and I'll most likely go with a 6" Blade on It, I've got quite the selection of 9" Bladed Knive's already and I'm pretty well stocked In that Blade length, I'm gonna carry mine as a CQC/Survival Knife so the two above should be perfect,

Well..7" blade would be a good length on the W.T. design, just remember because of the orientation of the guard it will probably be a little longer than say a Ka-Bar with a seven inch blade unless you custom fit the handle a little tighter to your hand than mine is. I think mine is about the same length as a standard Ka-Bar with it having a half inch shorter blade. He is also considered making a C.R. with an upper guard so that it could be done with a similar sheathe...that's another idea if you are thinking between these two.

Hi all,
Mistwalker, Yea I know what you ment LOL. But I think you are right about a smaller one for deployment i the urban setting. I know the 6" works just fine with the bag that I carry. Yea I think you are right about a little less blade length in the urban setting being a more suiteable size for carrying your knife in the bag that you use.

Snake Dr. Yea you are welcome for the pics of the dead fall traps. Well for all the knives the Recon, Combat Recon and the Warthorn the blades lengths have been just the 6" 6.5" then the tan handle Recon had a 7" blade length.
Now like my Warthorns have from the top of the guard along the spine to the tip of the blade is 6" but the bottom cutting edge is 6 and 5/8" long.

I do have in the works right now a 4.5" blade with a 4" handled Combat Recon knife for my Wife Kathy. She likes that blade shape the best so far out of the 3 different knives that I have made.

Yes like Mistwalker said I will sure Try to make knives with the blade and handle lengths choils or no choils different handle colors stuff like that. That is what getting a custom is all about getting it YOUR WAY.

Like mistwalker said we chatted about making up a Combat Recon blade shape with a Warthorn Slanted Gaurd and handle. I think that would look very cool LOL. I like the rise of the second part of the scallop that is further down the blade on the Combat Recon over the Recon's Blade shape.
Maybe that one will be called the Combat Warthorn LOL or not LOL

Like mistwalker said If you wanted a 7" blade because of the slanted guard the cutting edge would be about 7 and 5/8" for the cutting edge area minus the choil cut out area.

Snake Dr. I hope we get to meet here in the near future weather you come down to the farm or I come up to Omaha for some knife making supplies at tandy leather meeting would be preety darn cool :D

Bryan

Yeah, as you can see even my SOG Bowie is pushing it in this bag, it's really too big to carry....that other one is smaller than the SOG by a bit. So small enough to fit but big enough to be serviceable

My Warthorn sure worked good for chopping and splitting the wood, and making the shavings to start the fire yesterday.

Whats the thickness of that warthorn? Im planning to get a custom smaller knife (most likely Breeden) to compliment my SOD (Piggyback goodness:)) and its gotta do the fine work well, but still be stout, I find Moras to light (weird, I know). Most likely Ill get a pathfinder.

Hows your knife at making fuzz-sticks? I didn't see fuzz-making in the review.

The thickness on this one is 3/16, a bit thicker than a lot of people like and I believe Bryan is also making one or two in 5/32 as well....which would be better suited to woodlore type chores. I didn't do any pics of that did I...darn it I'll have to back track a bit I suppose. But remeber this one was designed for multi-purpose...for a dedicated bushcraft type knife the Pathfinder would likely be a good bit better suited. Also there is another one coming up that leans a lot more to the woodlore side of the scale but I'm thinking from what Bryan said it's probably three or four weeks away.

wow, 5/32, thats what I call precision! I like the pathfinder, cause it looks like its got the best of many different styles, and I wan't a kephart-ish knife, but ill def. check out the next knife. Im in no rush, it'll prob be around 6-7 weeks before I get another knife anyway.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Hi all,

Fuzz sticks you say LOL

I also had a fire yesterday but not to cook with like mistwalker did. Kelly Girl and I went for a walk along the stream and she gound a spot that she just could not resist for smelling in that area and so I thought I would make some fuzz sticks with my Warthorn and then light them on fire. well in the 10 or 12 minutes that I sat there and shaved up some fuzz sticks. I could hear that beagle of mine sniffing and going the through the tall grass and I thought she was coming in towards me. well I thought it was kelly and then just as I lit them fuzz sticks on fire with some cotton and pj mix wrapped around a stick for a longer match. I see out of the coner of my eye a little black and white ( my beagle is black and white) very small young Shunk :eek:not 6ft from me troting over to a brush pile that was about 10 feet from me. Well since I live on a farm and get out in the woods most every day seeing the local wild is a everyday thing. Well I had just taken the pic of the fuzz sticks on fire and did not even think of taking a pic of the little shunk. I bet it was not 30 seconds after that skunk trotted by me and went into that brush pile here comes Kelly Girl nose to the ground and following that skunk right up to that brush pile LOL and then stuck here head in there as to say gotch ya LOL. Well thankfully she did not catch that skunk LOL. I called KG and said come on lets go LOL

After we walked along the Creek some more I stopped to have a drink and then seen a nice straight stick about a foot long and just under a inch thick on a Ash tree branch that had broken off in a wind strom and so I decided to take our my orange handled Warthorn and make a tent stake out of it.

101_1941.jpg

Then I pounded that stake into the ground using my extened tang of my Warthorn.

101_1944.jpg

It did just fine pouding that stake in the ground. Well I thought anyways LOL

mistwalker seeing your cooked up food there sure makes me hungry now LOL

I think when you get the smaller new style of knife that you drew up, I think it will fit your bag just fine for them urban deployments that you do.

Zhangmaster12, like mistwalker said I will make thes Warthorns in different thickness if you wanted. Also the Pathfinder is a great woods knife to. It will be just up to you which one you like the best looks of. My vote goes for the Warthorn though LOL I just love this knife design and the way it handles for woods duty and kitchen duty and I am sure it would have no problem handling a tactcial situation also. Hope I never have to but you never know.
Life is full of suprizes. Some good and some bad.

yea the other designs that mistwalker taked about are out a few weeks yet.

I am sure a few pics of them othere designs will get posted when they are done though;)

Take care all,

Bryan

Great pics Bryan!

I'm sure looking at the blank it will be perfect!

Yeah, it made me hungry again too...might have to do that again soon :D

I started another thread to answer this, but I'm putting it here too.

No fatwood, just fuzzies made from a pine limb, some tips of dead branches, and a small limb I split, and my firesteel....and some dried hickory chips I added at the end. This knife makes fuzzies plenty well enough to suit me.
