Bret Dowell Knives

Finally got to work directly with Bret and he knocked it out of the park. To say that I'm pleased is an understatement. When we started, there was no set knife or plan in place because I honestly didn't know what pattern to choose from. We spitballed ideas and this became the final product.

Dogleg pattern
3-13/16" closed
ATS-34 steel
Shadetree coffee bag burlap scales
White liners

I took these pics yesterday on some old RR ties along an old set of tracks near my house:

- yes, wonderful knife, Jake........congrats to you and Bret - stunning  :)

Really nice, Jake. Great pattern and the burlap with white liners is really attractive.

Thank you all for the comments. Here's some WIP pics that Bret sent me along the way.

Great to see the pictures and how the knife came together. The finished product is superb, especially the white liners. They seem to "enhance" the micarta, IMO.

I agree, I also love WIP pics. They answer a lot of questions about how a knife gets made, but they also create questions as well. Bret is always nice to answer them which is great, even when I ask a bonehead question lol.

Great knife, Jake. I'm one year into Bret's waiting list and trying hard to be patient. Pictures like yours sure don't make it easy. :p

Wow, Brett Dowell has gotten insanely good since the last time I followed BF regularly. I mean, he was really good a couple years ago but this recent stuff is up there with the best I've seen. Is he using pivot bushings? Loving the swedge on dbla's barlow.

The bushings pictured are just used to cradle the pivot pin within the scales, there's no bushings inside the pivot. Just the tang riding on the mill relieved liners. Regardless, the knife is very smooth and snappy, especially the pen blade. Gotta watch that one lol.

What is this second tool?

It's a blade key. It can be used instead of your nail to open the blades of a slipjoint. It's made of a softer steel than the blade so that it won't scratch up the blade. If you spend a large chunk of time opening blades on multiple knives you start to get sore, and these come in handy. Not typically something you'd carry around with you, but if you're at a knife show or some similar situation they can be nice to have, and some custom makers will offer one alongside a knife on request.

Omg :O Can't wait to see the new one Paul :) Just checked out some new helmets today. We'll need a photo of the new bike with the LC when she arrives~

- here ya go, Tim.......Dowell + Street Glide Special, first trip together yesterday...
