Bringing new life to an old TL-29 using simple hand tools

Thanks Cory! I was pretty happy it went together. I had a really hard time with the pivot pin but I think it was all because the others weren't straight. The next one will go smoother. I had fun with it and cant wait to get started on the next. I've already been checking the auction sites for another. Your RR looks pretty good. Did you get time to start the barlow?

Not yet, I'm waiting on materials. I've been using what little time I've had for this finding a local source for brass, nickel silver, and steel. Hopefully once I can get supplies locally I can work on knives more regularly. I'm hoping to start on the barlow within the next week, though.

I'm impressed by the results of your first attempt, Kleingra:thumbup:
Heck, I'm impressed that you guys even make the attempt, regardless of how the first (or first five) turn out:D

I've been away from the forum for a little while, and I just saw this thread pop back up, and couldn't be happier!

Woohoo! Those are some awesome modifications, Corey and Kleingra!!:thumbup::thumbup:

Taking that first step is always the most difficult when getting into working on knives, and you both did a great job! I am so glad that I could help !

Now that you have a better understanding of the mechanics of a slipjoint, you can tackle another project with the confidence of not only knowledge, but also experience! Keep on keepin' on!!

Update- Your knife and pouch have been in my bumbag since I received them:)
That's the same bumbag that carries my diabetic stuff and goes everywhere I go.

I wanted to thank Evan for this amazing tutorial. Without it this rehandle job would not be possible. I took a single blade 15 that was clad in NifeBrite and put some white Buffalo bone on it. I oiled the bone with Boiled Linseed to give it a bit more of an antique look. Hope you like.

Awesome job, Lemmy! You've got some guts to try out your first modification on a GEC!

I like the look of that buffalo bone! Where did you find it?

Thanks Phil. I'll send you a PM about the Buffalo Bone. I think its water buffalo bone from India. It came jigged which was actually nice but by the time I sanded the scales down to size the jigging was all but gone so I figured I'd go smooth. Next time i'll plane down the back side of the bone before i attach it to the liner. duh.

I'd say it was a lucky turn that had you had to sand them smooth. They turned out beautiful.

Thanks Liam and Cory. And Cory there doesn't seem to be anything incompetent about your own mod. Looks great to me.

Wow Lemmy. Thats a beautiful knife. I love the patina with the aged look of the bone. Great work!

Thanks Kleingra. Yeah I decided to preserve the patina through the transformation process. Its an earned one and this knife has always been a special one to me. I only decided to reslab it after I got a sunbrite 77 that took over as my night stand utility knife. I'm just glad it made through the other side and didn't get stuck on my work bench as a bunch of mangled parts after disassembly.

just found this thread, awesome work esnyx! and definitely a request for more tutorials/pics from your work bench.
brgds b

Wow, Lemmy, that project turned out great!! Looks magnificent :thumbup:

I'm a little late to this party but I wanted to thank you Evan for the great tutorial. Always nice to see great craftsmanship especially when it is shared with others. Thanks again!
