Broken BK-9 Blade

Hey Falconer.....

Sorry to see that chip......please contact KA-BAR .......1 800 282 0130 ask for Tooj....... Let us know what he says.....

No matter how careful you are sometimes feces occur.........

Sorry it happened to you.....

No. It went to bed with me in my tent and was put in my pack after. There was just my gf and she has her own Beckers! lol

That chip looks like you were trying to cut/baton through a bolt or nail.... oops, I didn't say that. :) Hope Ka-Bar comes through and gives you a new one. I think Case would probably do that, so I see no reason for Ka-Bar not to.

you can't always know your "wild materials"

lots of wood has nasty, rough stuff in it.

that's why i personally think batoning is ... well ... dumb. it's dumb yo?

if you need to split wood, use the right tool ;) an hatchet, axe, fro YO!, and so on.

if you HAVE to split wood, a little chip won't slow you down in a survival situation.

if you baton for yucks, and your knife chips out, deal with it. that's normal. it's going to happen to almost everything, even an axe, sooner or later. done it.

good thing the warranty is there.

knots, inclusions, silicaceous lignan, yo, bad news to thin knives.

I agree to a point. I own several tools better suited for splitting wood. My Wetterling's Wildlife Axe is a great little splitter with a caveat. The situation I often find myself in is carrying a very heavy pack at high elevation and even my Leatherman Wave has to stay home sometimes. The BK-9 does so many other things better than a hatchet and I'm personally much more comfortable using it. I never blamed the knife. I never said I wasn't at fault. I drove it through grocery store firewood. The kind that's half dust inside because of the termites. I did not deny there could have been a nail in the wood. If there was the knife did not hesitate in going right through it so I didn't have a chance to check up and pull it out before it chipped. My tools are very important to me and I was taught to take care of them. You can tell by the rest of the edge that I sharpened it with care. I have 20yr old fishing reels that still work like new. My point is I take very good care of my stuff. It's a testament to the knife that I choose it over other knives and tools in my possession. I was truly saddened when I saw the chip. I posted here more in grief and to ask if I voided my warranty by stripping it. If KaBar warranties it they will have given me even more reason to love their products. If not I will save up and get another. One thing I'd like to mention is that no matter what kind of wood I've used my Wetterling's on it almost always has nicks in the blade when I'm done. Doesn't matter if I'm limbing green saplings or splitting seasoned firewood on a stump. The factory edge came shaving sharp and very thin. It requires so much more maintenance that I have to bring a stone with me to repair the edge. The King on the other hand has never needed a touchup in the field. I wish I could carry a specialized tool for every task but that's not very practical. I take a BK-9/BK-13, BK-14, Laplander folding saw and a SAK Farmer. So far I've never felt like I needed anything else for 3 days in the woods as far as cutting tools go. I bought my gf a BK-11 and she's carried it everyday for 2 years. I've been nothing but satisfied with the product.

I spoke with Ka-Bar a few minutes ago. I'm sending the knife back. They will inspect it but from what was said it sounds like they are going to replace it. I will keep you all updated as things progress.

Even if they don't replace it the fact Ethan replied personally and called ahead so they'd be expecting my call makes me feel like I didn't just buy a knife. I bought into a family. It's also restored some of that lost faith in American made products like we discussed on IG. I will save that story for another post.

This right here is why I chose to buy a Becker. Awesome stuff right there.

Awesome to hear. Hope everything works out for the best. I find it really cool that people like Ethan take the time to personally help out his customers. Far too many times these days I've found that getting service from large faceless corporations far too much of a hassle to make it worthwhile. Not so with Ka-Bar and BK&T. They really have the small family business vibe going on and really go the extra mile for their customers. Got my fingers crossed for ya bud 👍

It really does make a difference. It's an attitude that everyone should try to mirror. I'm not saying you should replace every product someone manages to break but having compassion is sometimes enough. I can tell you that I've never had so much sentimental attachment to my knives as I do with my Beckers. I have some knives in D2 and S30V. Some handmade with so much pride and attention to detail. There was a time when like many I would not take my most expensive knives where I needed them most in fear of damaging or losing them. I realized how dumb that was but also that a good knife didn't need to cost $250 or be difficult to sharpen for the less talented.

It's not often that I read a thread about a knife/tool breaking and by the end of it actually want to buy that product. Great service Ethan, makes me really want to buy that BK10 I have been eyeing....
