BUCK 110's for $23.00

Gritty feel to it. That could be changed with a little work. What put me off was the ultra-crappy sheath. No self-respecting Buck ought to ride in a sheath like that.

I washed the grit out of mine, lubed it with a drop of Miltec, and now it's very smooth.

But I haven't even looked at the sheath! It shows that it pays to pay attention! :o Fortunately, I've got an extra leather sheath for it.

I would still buy one because I don't usually use a sheath, I just stick it in my pocket. But the gritty issue has me worried. Maybe it's just from the crummy fuzzy gift box?

Carl's got the right idea. I'd rather pay a little more and get a Buck 110 with better materials and a nice cordura sheath. That is, I'd rather take that $25 and put it into a custom. Got my eye on that Asian water buffalo with nickel silver bolsters and BG-42.

I can't wait for mine to show up (BG42, cherrywood, silver). I wasn't sure how the color combination will look, but I really only care about getting a BG42 knife. If I really love it, I will probably go for more, maybe the stag. Or smooth water buffalo with fingergrooves. Or both. :)

GoeThorn,
The guys here have it right on...The sheath that comes with the box special, is crap!....Its NOTHING like the ones you pictured, I have some of those myself, and they are top notch.

The sheath that comes with the 110 looks like it is made out of a cheap raincoat nylon, I just took one look at it and put it back under the insert.

Geo,
The sheath with the WalMart deal looks identical to the ones on the left in your photo except the fabric is a finer weave. The belt loop detail is the same and the white tag is in the same place. The white tag reads "BUCK 110". I'm not sure about the cheap raincoat comment (with all due respect). The fabric feels substantial to me....just my opinion.

Irregardless of the quality of the sheath, for $24 that looks like one hell of a deal to me! Here I come Wally.:D

I finally looked at the sheath last night. :grumpy:

I have one of the good nylon ones that came with my 560. The 560 sheath is much nicer. I'm not sure I'd call the Wally World sheath crap -- though it's a close call. It's usable, but from the looks of the thinner, finer weave material I don't think it would last nearly as long as one of the better ones.

So I'm not sure the $23.44 is a better value than $29.95 with a better sheath. I guess it's still a good deal if you like knife tins. I might sit mine on my dresser and use it to hold about 15 or so of my "gent" knives.

I probably should've gone for the $29.95 with $10 rebate offer they had at Dick's Sporting goods. They were in plastic clam packs, and I'm pretty sure it came with the nicer nylon sheath. I think that sale ends tomorrow (11-5).

The salesman at Walmart said that if there's any left after Christmas, they'll probably go on sale. If they went below $20, that would be a bargain, even with the less than spectacular sheath.

I just picked one up for myself yesterday, and one for each of my two boys for Christmas. They will be tickled to death, and since they are only ten and six, I doubt if they will be scrutinizing the sheath. :)

Good point. And if they or anyone else ever wants the leather sheath, you can get them for $7.97:

I sort of doubt grittiness will be an issue on a custom Buck.

Identical is a stretch. Same basic design, but a lot flatter/thinner overall and much less stiffness. geothorn's cordura sheaths are far and away better sheaths. I happen to like cordura too btw. I like to wear my Buck when hiking, and the cordura sheath is much quicker to dry if I get caught it a little rain.
So I'm not sure the $23.44 is a better value than $29.95 with a better sheath.
Kind of my thinking too. Hey, it's still a great deal, but I just wouldn't expect the flimsier sheaths to hold up near as long.

They're not going to care if you ask them to carry it in a brown paper bag. I remember getting my first knife (a small Boker) when I was about 10. It was a BIG deal. 6 seems a little young for a Buck 110 though. Is this a knife that he'll get to carry just on certain supervised occasions (eg. a deer hunt maybe)?

Hey, I wasn't trying to harsh anyone's euphoria over the deal. $24 for a 110 is a bargain anywhere you go. And the grittiness can be taken care of in about 5 minutes if you happen to get a similar one. If they go for less than $20 after Xmas, I'll be in line. $20 Buck + $35 blade replacement = $55 custom Buck.

I just couldn't believe the quality of the sheaths. I think most folks who have bought a 110 in the past would be disappointed in these "raincoat" specials.

Hey Coonskinner, if you don't have any extra sheaths for a 110 around, I think I may have a couple of leather ones I'd send you. I went to all cordura a while back, and I think I can put my hands on a couple of leather hold-overs. Just email me your address if you want them for your boys. If I remember right, one is black and one is brown. They can fight over the colors.

A 110 is a big knife for a kid without a sheath. And I'd hate for them to think that is the best Buck can do in a sheath.

Thanks, Guyon. I appreciate that very much. Email incoming.

No thanks required. If the sheaths at all help those boys appreciate their knives a little more, that's enough thanks.

And yes, they will be supervised
Wasn't trying to put my nose where it didn't belong. I have a 15-month-old son, and I'm already putting back knives for him (Uncle Henrys that are no longer made, for example). So I've been thinking a bit about when I'll let him carry one or more of them.

Carl, I think that's going to look nice. I've been looking at a Boker slipjoint with red bone scales, and I think red goes nicely with the nickel silver bolsters.

I think you'll enjoy the BG-42. I have one BG-42 Buck--a custom (stag, nickel silver, finger grooves, rivets) that is quite the cutter. Super sharp and great edge holding. I'm thinking hard about another one with BG-42, Asian water buffalo, nickel silver, no rivets.

Hello...

Don't take any comments I made about the sheath make anyone think twice about picking up a Buck!
I have backup leather ones I bought long ago, so for me the cheaper nylon one was never an issue, I knew I would never use it anyway.

I stopped on the way to work this morning and bouhgt more just to put back a few for maybe a future ebay sell or gifts....I dont know how many Bucks each Wally-World receives, but mine was almost out of them from the one display unit and its only been a week....and as it was mentioned, if they mark em down after X-Mas if they have any left....maybe I need to go back tonight and hide a few around the store to buy later :D

well here i the east pan handle of WV the wally dont have that tin at all. i checked here and in hagerstown md also and neithe had them!! the k store did not have the ones for 19$ a few months ago either... tho i did get a 2002 110 last year at wally's box mart...

on prices - well i paid 14$ for my first 2 liner folding hunter at a mom and pop hardware/hunting store in the boonies of mid virginia in '68...oh and gas was 0.20 cents a gal.& min wage was 0.93 cents an hr. and what you guys are saying is that it is less then 4 hr of work to buy a buck now at min wage or about the cost of 10 gal of gas
and then it was over 14 hr's of work then or the cost of over 50 gal of gas...
humm and people wish for the golden good old days>>>>? or is it that gas and other are so LOW....yea think about it we all should ...

quality is better on todays 110 anway tho i liked th lack of a cearve in the back of the handle then better and the longer camfer of the clip...

I guess that I'm going to have to find one of these Wal*Mart $23 110 tins to see what these ultra-flimsy nylon sheaths are like. I wish that there was a better sheath with the $23 110s than there apparently is, however, to allow a 110 to sell for only $23 probably means that the cost of the overall product needed reduction, somewhere. Are most of the $23 110s experiencing the grittiness in the lock?

Guyon, what happened when you took that opened tin back back to Wal*Mart? Did they let you return it simply because of your dissatisfaction with the less-sturdy sheath? It is tough buying a knife (and sheath) without seeing it first to make certain that the fit, finish and sheath are up to your expectations.

I'm looking forward to locating a $23 Buck 110 in my future, despite the sheath. I can always upgrade to the higher-end replacement nylon sheath if I'm disappointed, too. I trust your assessments of the $23 Buck 110 sheath...so at least I'm prepared for it not being the best, y'know? ;)

Guyon,
I'm leaving in the morning on a 60 mile paddle trip down an East Texas River. The $23-dollar 110 with sheath is strapped to a Duluth Pack waiting to be loaded. I'll report back on any sheath wear or shreading (assuming my 53-year old couch-potato body survives as well).

I find it easier to take all returns, particularly ammo, to the jewelry counter for a refund. :D No seriously, the lady at customer service didn't even blink an eye. In fact, she didn't even crack the tin, which could have been emptied for all she knew (it wasn't). I think, as long as you've got the cardboard cover with the UPC code and a receipt, you're fine if you want to return it.

You don't know how I miss the days when all knives came in boxes that allowed you to actually touch the knife (gasp) and inspect it before buying. I do a lot of peering sideways, one eye squinted funny, into clampack these days.

Man, that sounds like fun. Good time of year for it--not so unbearably hot. Yeah, I'll be eager to hear how the sheath holds up, and if it is made of some sort of wonder fabric, I'll be the first to admit I'm wrong. Put that 110 to task as well, and give us a report if you will. You can't beat a 110 for an outdoor folding knife in my opinion, so I expect it'll serve you well.

FWIW...

I've opened up 3 of the ones I bought and not one of the three have any sign of being gritty, all open/close smoothly.

Only very minor residue left in some tight spaces of whatever Buck uses to buff & polish the final product, and what little there is can easily be removed with a toothpick.

That's good to hear. The one I inspected definitely had some grit, but like I said before, a few minutes of flushing/lubing would have taken care of it.
