Buck 112 - pawn shop find, advice & opinions requested

I have seen pictures of some knives, where the owner thinned them down. So if that was my knife I would send it in and ask for a blade replacement with the included spa. I would ask them to clean up the handle and scales as much as possible. If I like the looks when it came back I would leave it be. If not I would take it to a sander and sand the sides until I got rid of the groves in the wood. I think it is a perfect candidate to become a thinned down knife.

O.B.
Exactly what I would do except I'd tell Buck to keep thinning the handle until Packrat and the grooves are gone. Thinning the handle would also address the deep dings in the bolsters. The question is, will Buck thin down a handle this much if asked to do the work?

I just thought of something else . . . I could probably fill the letters and lines with something, then sand it smooth. It would look perhaps worse than it already does, but it would feel better to my delicate, raccoon-like hand when in use. I could even paint it afterward.

Thoughts?
I’ve done a similar project with a tool handle that was worn down and chipped. I used that colored epoxy stuff that comes in a two tone roll that you pinch off the amount you need and then kneed it together and smash it into the shape and file or sand it to finish. Id even do a bit more grooving to dispell pack rat before the epoxy. Might come out looking like a piece of ironwood. 😆

Got in late on this one. I would have restored it in house. It’s not a collector so sanding and polishing the blade and then sharpen with a little reprofiling to as close to original. And sanding the scales and bolsters. You may not get it all out but it would still be a useful tool and look a lot better. I think the spa and blade is the best second choice in my opinion and like manholes everyone has one. 😁😂

Ironic twist . . . I sent email to the warranty dept maybe a week or more before I shipped the knife. I asked about getting the scales replaced, but I never received a reply.

A few days after I shipped the knife with a request to only do the blade replacement, I got a response to my email that they would fix the scales for $15 and that I should mention it on the form.

Unfortunately, the reply came too late. Maybe they will allow me to add the scale fix when they contact me to let me know it was received.

Update: the ailing packrat went into the USPS system on Friday. Re-blade requested.

I mailed the package on 25MAR22. Anyone have experience on how long it takes to receive an email confirming receipt of the package?

I have sent knives to Buck for the Spa treatment and have never got an e-mail conformation...
Dont know what to tell ya??
