Buck Custom 110 finally arrived!

...Also, I think that the champer/clip on the newer BG-42 blades are different that the reg. 110s. Could you see the difference? Trax would have noticed!!!

I can't see too good the Yahoo Photos...but you are right - it almost looks like there is *no* grind on the top of the chamfer...

Trax, I think that you'll like the elk scales I have two with the elk...

The Buck Custom Shoppe photo shows them with "bark" on them too, but I guess I can put up with it... ;)

Mike - You've almost convinced me to order one in Sambar Stag just to have a "Matched Set" with the 2nd run of BCCI Specials... :D

(Let's see who picks up on that!)

Trax,

My new stag and damascus just arrived...the stag is really nice:eek: ...I'd go for the sambar over the elk. These are thinner than both with elk scales...and the sambar has a subtle brownish-orange fading into creamy white. Me like, now the long wait 'til March. Preston

Wilco...tomorrow, light will be better. Preston

Post it here, Preston...I'm sure we all want to see it... :D

(Well, I do anyway!)...

Does anyone have an example of the Elk??? :)

...ARGH!!!... :grumpy:

I left here and went right to Buckknives.com and built my Custom 110...Brown Elk scales, BG-42 satin blade, Nickel bolsters, pins, Cordura sheath...Filled in all the boxes, got to the credit card number...reached into my Winnie-the-Pooh jammies [with the feet], and realized my wallet was upstairs in my jeans...

...By the time I got back downstairs, the fever had worn off... :p

I'll wait until I see an actual pic of the Buck Brown Elk... ;)

Edit2:...and finger grooves!... ;)

Trax,

I will...check post #20 in this thread:) . Preston

...How'd I miss that???... (Edit: Hmmmm...When I read this post yesterday, the pics didn't load...I thought you were talking about the Buck site pics...)

I love that one with the spaghetti strainer blade! The blade sucks, but the scales are *great*!!! :p (JK!!!) ;)

The damascus bladed knife scales don't do anything for me...Too much "bark"... :o

Mike,

That's really nice looking...I'm wondering(hoping) if stag will age and yellow or if that's the way some of them come. Mine is much more white(pale), with just traces of that warm yellow, yours is rich and wonderful. Good score!!! Preston

It seems I remember reading on one of the forums that soaking stag in mineral oil will give it that aged yellow color. Maybe someone will chime in that knows if that is true of not.

Tom

I'm wondering if stag will age naturally over time to produce the yellowing effect. This knife camne new in a box with papers that had been on a shelf since the year of manufacture. It seems all the newer stag I've seen is white with specks of gray. Knowing it will age like this would be a plus. :) Hopefully someone will chime in and let us know.

Very nice! ...do you know what type of stag it is???

I have no clue. Since it came this way from Buck, perhaps Joe or someone can shed some light as to their sources for stag throughout the years. Has it changed? What has their experience been with yellowing or is this just a different source and was like this when new in the 80's?

Trax, here are two views of my new one...maybe the backgound is not the best to see the color of the stag...not like Mike's but maybe with age(I know that I'm turning kinda yellow) it will.

Boy, those are large pictures...sorry. Preston

Thanks for the info Tom...mineral oil it is.

And thanks Mike, I've told you before what nice knives you have...it's always good to get a nice one. Preston

That's a good looking scale!!! :) What exactly is that - Sambar or Elk??? I like the way they take an inside curved antler piece and buff the ends so that you can see the grain...and with only about 3/5ths of the bark left showing...I can live with that. That big Parker of mine has a flat antler section, and they had to abruptly taper the ends to get the grain to show...but they really did a great job buffing it...or maybe varnished it; I can't tell...

WTF??? The Damascus blade says "Designers Choice" on it too??? :grumpy:

About the oil yellowing...I don't really see why you'd *want* it to "age" and yellow...I was cutting through the Housewares Dept in WallyWorld and saw some white Nylon cutting boards, about 3/8" thick...I bought two...I'm thinking of practicing routing them for knife scales...but if they look good, they might end up riveted to an EDC... :D

(At least until I can get some white Micarta)

And on the mineral oil - somewhere here there is a thread where someone [I'm really forgetful lately - incipient Alzheimers, no doubt] pointed out that antler is just another form of hair, or something to that effect...there's no point here; I'm just throwing that into the pot... :D

Edit: I'm still having loading problems...The 2nd pic from Preston only loaded halfway (the 1st loaded fully)...but I was able to click & save it, and the whole pic showed up...very strange...
