Mastodon antlers...You guys won't let me forget that, will you??? :D

Trax, you've got to admit that that is funny...I still laugh and giggle about it;).

Tell me what is second cut stag, where is it used and why?

Trax, that is going to be very good looking, is it an older frame? My feeling is that that will add to it's good looks. I'm basing it on the fact that the frame is flat and those scales are also flat. I guess it would depend on how much you'll be rounding the scales and frame. Preston

Me, too! I'm going to start a thread on Mastodon Antlered 110 pretty soon, I think... :D

If you have a nice think antler and you only use a segment of the outer layer, there is still a lot of good stag left. No bark on it, but nice dense, solid material. The "second cut". Lots of mfgs then dye, burn, and/or jig it to look like "bark". I prefer the sanded smooth look. :)

Yep, it's an older no-dot, 2-pin, slab side. No rounding! ;)

Now that really does get me to laughing and giggling...I can see the horns protruding from the bolsters...just what will you use for scales:confused:. I know, I have some elk hide:eek: around here with the hair, on I'll put it in the mail:D. Preston

Not to worry...I have an ample supply of Mastodon antler hidden...

Many thousands of years ago, when wooly mammoths and clip-pointed tigers ranged across the steppes of what would be know as Baja California [or "occupied Mexico"], the undisputed ruler of the grassy slopes was the Mastodon...standing well over 20' at the quivers, and sporting both tusks and antlers, the Mastodon was an awe inspiring sight...

Early man, hunting for food and weapons, would often break off an antler, and grind it into a knife by rubbing it on a concrete sidewalk slab, then honing the edge on a piece of marble curbing...

For thousands of years, no one ever saw a Mastodon die a natural death...it was rumored that there was a secret canyon, somewhere in the Palos Verdes Mountains, where aging Mastodons would go to die...a canyon rich in Mastodon stag...

I have found that canyon...and the Mastodon Antlered Buck 110 shall be my masterpiece...for this week...

I ordered a Custom 110 on November 13th and it arrived today. That was fast! It has sambar stag scales, nickel bolsters, no pins, and finger grooves with a BG-42 blade. ;) ;)

Hey Mike & et al...
I went to order a 110 from the Buck Custom Shop but they won't be getting Damascus in for about a month.

So, maybe the Damascus shortage is a good thing as I ponder, seek truth, and wisdom from fellow Buckers...wasn't sure if I wanted pins in the sambar.

What are the pros :) and cons :( of the pins?

Thank you in advance for your comments...

A 1%'er, But Not a Con (get it..."pros and cons"...ha ha...I'll be here all week and don't forget to tip your cocktail waitress!!!)...
Me.

mfinden, this was discussed in a previous thread...I couldn't find it. IIRC, posts varied as you might imagine...the jest of it was, it is your personal preference because the scales will not come off either way.

My preference is that if the scales are textured no pins...smooth material I'd put pins. JMHO. Preston

Thanks Preston...
I know it's frustrating to see the NKOTB ask redundant questions but I'm a slacker. Hell, there's like 170 threads and 130-140 hits on pins and rivets.
So when I read about Mike's Custom I thought I would ask here since I am looking at a similar config 'cept w/ DM.
Your repsonse indicates, to me anyway, that pins are cosmetic and not truly functional. But from an asthetic point, I would do as you state...smooth=pins...texture=no pins.
Thanks Again Preston for your reply.
Kind Regards,
Me.

Joe Houser mentioned in a thread about Scale Glue that the "Customs" receive glue while "standard production" 110's do not...

And IIRC there is a pic floating around showing how hard it is to remove the scales that are glued on...

Personally, I like the look of rivets.

I would think the pins are quicker to assemble than glue...on a production line...

Has Joe said anywhere why Buck went from 2 scale pins to three???

Tonight I ordered a Custom 110 with the BG-42 Satin Blade and Sansar Stag w/ no pins and nickel bolsters.

When my wife sees the credit card bill I am going to explain my compulsive behavior as a result of hanging with you guys on this forum. She dosen't know I fell in with a batch of knife nuts-She thinks I am up all night looking at porno!

I ordered the knife on Jan 28th - how long do you think it will take before I can get my hot little hands on it?
Porky

 :D ...LMAO... So you'd rather leave her to think you're checkin' out porn instead of bein' around such "bad influences" like us Buck-Nuts huh???...LOL...Wait til this gets around the forum...HA HA HA...Sounds like you've ordered a great knife porky...Probably should take 2 weeks or so...maybe a bit longer depending on the mail and how many other "porn-nuts" have ordered customs...LOL. That sambar stag sure is popular right now. With the BCCI knife being sambar and all the fellas ordering it out for their customs, ya gotta wonder how long it'll be available. I gotta check out the piggy bank to see if there's enough in there for me to order one of those beauties. Let us know when your new custom arrives.

Coffee running out my nose funny Porky, I will have to remember that. I have heard knife pictures referred to as knife porn on some other forums but not this one..

We may have to start a separate 110 Custom club for those of us that bought customs in the same configuration you ordered. Except I did get finger grips. The handles on both of mine have really nice pronounced raised ridges, if that is what you would call it.
Beautiful knives. I really thought about one of them being a user, but I guess I will send in a different 110 for a BG42 blade swap instead. I once traded off a like new Browning BAR 270 because it had such a high quality finish on it that I wouldn't carry it hunting. Now I am hoarding knives that I probably won't ever carry.
