Buck-n-Guns

Tecate Tecate thanks for your reply. Two weeks ago I thought I had struck gold, NOS Marlin 1894 in 44 MAG for just under $1K in a Pawn & Gun, but alas, it had the REM proof-mark. Looking for that first Ruger/Marlin in 44 MAG that I can put my hands on. Let us know how it shoots. Thanks again, OH

Preston, your modern M70 in stainless looks just as good in profile as the vintage blue steel variations. Very nice (of course the Buck Knife looks like a vintage one to me). Glad you enjoyed your hunt.
Thanks Bruce, the 118 is of recent production. I had Leroy put together the parts and add a stacked Lucite handle to harken back to the older Buck fixed blades. The Model 70 is so much lighter to carry than my pre 64 Model 70. I post a photo of them together tomorrow. Would like to have a vintage Lucite fixed blade but I have a couple that will have to do.

The twin set, 102 and 103 was from the 30th Anniversary GTG.

The Model 70 Extreme Weather in 308 and the pre 64(1950) in 30-06. Sadly, the pre 64 is not as it came from the factory due to me using a cheap rifle rest and chewing up the fore end. Had it refinished and a Kick-Eze butt pad installed. It would be close to OEM if I could find a pre 64 stock that would fit.

How do you like the pre 64 compared to the newer one? I try to keep an eye out for a pre 64 in 7mm Mauser that isn’t priced crazy high but no luck yet.

Aesthetically, very much better...iconic/classic.
It's much heavier than the modern SS one, being old and weak and I didn't want to expose it to the elements or hazards of the hunt so I don't carry it in the field.
I haven't shot it much, or recently, so I can't compare the accuracy.
Good luck in your search for the 7mm Mauser, good caliber, makes it hard to find.

Been enjoying the Winchester M70 pictures paired with Buck Knives. Here is my 22 centerfire Model 70, a .225 WIN built in 1966, this one sports the second variation of the Post-64 impressed checkering. Five shot groups with handloads run 5/8" to 7/8" through the standard weight barrel. As a varmint rifle, it pairs well with a Buck 313 Muskrat. OH

Preston, pairs real nice with that real nice Buck 118! I like the heavier pre-64 construction when I hunt with my 30-06 SPRG - you hardly feel any recoil and I shoot 180's in mine. OH

Your Classic looks pretty darn nice (what I can see of it) - how does it shoot for you? OH
Ps I'd be derelict in my duty if I didn't mention how VERY NICE the stag handle on your Houser Custom look.

Thanks! It shoots like a dream! It is kind of an odd duck as far as m70’s go. There was a special run that was done for Cabela’s of various calibers. This one is from that batch. It’s a super grade featherweight. From what I gathered it has a combo of features found on those different models. I happed to be in Cabelas several years ago and saw it on clearance. The guy said they didn’t sell well because of being 7mm Mauser. In hindsight I wish I would have bought the other that they had.

Buck 105 Pathfinder I bought from the PX at Aberdeen Proving Ground MD when I was a 2LT attending the Ordnance Officers Basic Course in 1976, my first Buck hunting & military fixed blade field knife. The Ruger M77 in 270 WIN was my first high power hunting rifle, purchased for me by my wife in January 1978 (on its third scope - trying to let better glass keep up with declining vision). Still own both hunting tools (and still have the wife!) OH
